  1. How old is your DD? Forgive me if it's been mentioned...I'm newer here. "Larvae" to be specific.:tongue_smilie:
  2. I have one son who is a first year Boy Scout, and another one that is a second year Webelo. They had a first aid instructor come and teach a class to the 1st and 2nd year Webelos last year...and I think they do it every other year to make sure and catch all the kids. My older son is also having to take additional first aid/CPR courses in Boy Scouts.
  3. Does anyone have experience with both of these? I now have them both on hand, and I've changed my mind about 3 times, lol. This would be for my ds who just turned 7. We started with Astronomy, but he has a hard time retaining everything. Is he supposed to? I'm so confused. HELP? I don't mind if it's secular or not...we use a mixture of the two. :001_smile:
  4. Hoping we have the same success with my "general eye roller." :001_smile:
  5. http://ztwistbooks.com/oscstore/index.php?cPath=21 Here's the link...they offer free Media Mail.
  6. My DS(7) is using Apologia Astronomy right now, and he really enjoys it. I plan to continue using these books until he's in middle school. I have the Anatomy book to move onto next, but he's been showing a lot of interest lately in Marine Biology. I was thinking of doing Zoology II Swimming Creatures, instead. Does it matter if you use it before Zoology I? Are there some that are easier for a younger child than others? What order are you using them? Thanks!
  7. We plan on using Horizons for DS(7), and then switch him over to Saxon when he's ready for 8/7. Saxon gets much more difficult, imo, during the middle school/high school grades.
  8. We have not done Biology yet, but we have good friends who have had great luck with BJU Biology. Good Luck!
  9. I'm just started to "ween" my finger/card from my 7yo right now, lol. He's doing fine.
  10. I'm so sorry. I have some issues with my mother and my children, as well. Luckily, my MIL is fabulous. :grouphug: I hope your vacation goes well!
  11. I'm somewhere in the middle. My 7 yo is allowed to ride down a few driveways on the road and come back. (We're on a rural cul-de-sac) My 12 yo is very angry with me right now because he wanted to take his fishing pole and ride to the creek and go fishing by himself. (With a friend, I would have considered it, but not alone) Needless to say, I'm not very popular. I want to give them the freedom they want, but it's hard when hear story after story about a missing child. My older two boys are allowed to ride, play in the neighborhood as long as they tell me where they are going. It's a lot different than when I was a child! Public bathrooms are a major problem with us, as well. I usually try to use the "buddy system."
  12. :iagree: That's the conclusion that I came to, as well. I hope I'm making the right decision. I figure if it gets "too meaty" I'll employ my engineer husband. (I was a liberal arts major, lol)
  13. :iagree: I did order from the publisher after I was led there by another homeschooler, and I was astonished at the great deal I got. On Amazon, they are going for up to $100 a piece. Can you believe that? :001_huh:
  14. I'm convinced...I ordered the first two books, and hopefully they'll be here by "Fridays with Fred." :D
  15. I can't tell you how many things have caught my interest since I've been lurking here. I'm just sad we can't try them all! M - TH Saxon, and Fri LOF sounds like a good combo.
  16. Also, after having 2 sons in the middle of July (in a hot, sticky climate) I'd recommend being full term in a different season.:001_smile: Best of Luck!
  17. How terrifying! I hope they can figure out what's been going on so she can feel safe in her home, again.
  18. Both of my older sons are using Saxon math. Older one is doing 7/6, and younger one is doing 6/5. They actually placed higher, but I found a couple of concepts that they would have missed if I skipped them, so they are doing a fairly "easy" year of math. For example, I'm only making them do evens or odds on the mixed practice. Given the above circumstances, would you supplement? I found LOF online, and I think it looks like a blast. It looks like my older sons would enjoy it. Should I stick to a Saxon routine they like and are comfortable with? (With a "this is too easy" once in a while) or break it up with LOF? How would you implement it? Which book? Thanks! :001_smile:
  19. Thanks for everyone's input!! We've decided to place an order for BJU Science 6. My sixth grader can obviously do it, and I think my 5th grader is up for the challenge. They can both finish by college, and I certainly think it will be rigorous enough. Plus...they can be lab partners. :001_smile: Also, it's early enough to switch if it doesn't feel right.
  20. My boys have just started with R&S 5 and 6, and everyone is very happy with it. No experience with FLL.
  21. We'll use Horizons through elementary, and then move on to Saxon as well. My older sons are doing Saxon, and everyone is happy with it.
  22. My hope (being Christian) is to supplement a secular program but also make sure they are being taught secular viewpoints if they are using a Christian program. The science content is my main concern. The periodic table is the periodic table no matter what program we'd use. The only reason I had mentioned Christian based programs specifically is that those are the ones that I find the most easy to research. That's why I'm here...to see if there is something that I may be missing. It is my first year, I'm not pretending to know everything, but I'm not going to throw out a curriculum or pick one based only on theology. :) Again, that's how we feel in our family. One concern that you brought up that had been in my mind was whether there are colleges and universities that wouldn't give credit for an Apologia or Bob Jones class? Thanks for all of the great help!
