  1. http://www.worldmag.com/articles/19668 Interesting article by Randy Alcorn. I admit that I tend to be leery of Christian fiction in general, but I may have to give some of the mentioned titles a try.
  2. So, it should be more like Firefly than Lost, is what you all are saying? I can live with that. :)
  3. Well, The Hunger Games, but it doesn't sound like you would like it... http://www.usatoday.com/life/books/news/story/2012-05-29/book-trilogies-are-hot/55290008/1
  4. DISCLAIMER: I am not KJV-only. I actually dislike the KJV, and believe it to have many errors in translation. I prefer the NASB and ESV, personally. (I don't think they are perfect either, btw) However, my opinion is that God used the KJV as pretty much the only Bible many people had for a very long time, and still worked mightily through it, despite its flaws. I have no problem with people preferring or requiring KJV, and believe God can speak to the reader through it. Look at all the great theologians, evangelists, and preachers of the past who only used the KJV. I actively dislike the NIV as well. I think the 1984 edition is superior to the subsequent versions, but still I have too many issues with it to use it regularly. But, all the same, God has used it to speak to people and bring them to Him throughout the years. Just something to keep in mind as you are looking at this topic. As to why, there are different reasons. Keep in mind there are those who believe the KJV to be the inspired, inerrant Word of God, and there are those who just think it is the best translation based on the best manuscripts (the Textus Receptus, or Byzantine text), and those who just like it the best because of its language or that's what they grew up with, etc. So their reasons could be different. What is the position of your dh and/or the church you attend?
  5. We have just started watching Jericho, we are 3 episodes in, I think. So far, it is pretty intriguing, in a Lost (or even Heroes a bit) sort of way. Am I going to regret this? We weren't able to finish Lost or Heroes because they got ridiculous...
  6. http://www.fgcquaker.org/explore Perhaps there is a Society of Friends group near you? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_Society_of_Friends
  7. To the OP, thanks for the link! From a male perspective, it is difficult to be complementarian. There is a lot of pressure on me to not screw up. I would much rather have my wife lead most of the time, honestly. But, I believe that I can't, theologically. So, I pull up my big boy pants and try to shepherd my family the best I can, by God's grace.
  8. First of all, I am glad you are asking these questions instead of just blindly following what you have been taught. And I want you to know that I will be praying for you that you find the answers. I think reading a good book on Systematic Theology will help you. Starting with the doctrines of Scripture, and then the Church and the Atonement. I HIGHLY recommend this book: http://www.amazon.com/Systematic-Theology-Introduction-Biblical-Doctrine/dp/0310286700 It is long, but thorough and very readable.
  9. I ended up just ordering them from Amazon. I don't have them yet, but I will look through them to judge their quality prior to sending them out.
  10. Thanks! Both of the books I am wanting to send him also have Spanish language editions, but the ones I have found are so much more expensive. He is very fluent in English, I would guess at a high school level or so. He has told me that reading in Spanish is a bit easier for him though.
  11. Please, no comments about the book choices themselves. My boss is spending some time overseas for a little while, and I am wanting to send him a couple books to help him pass the time. I want to send him Bastiat's The Law, but there are so many versions and translations out there! Which would you recommend? A link to purchase a paperback copy of that particular edition would be appreciated. I am also wanting to send him a copy of Economics in One Lesson by Hazlitt. He is not much of a reader generally, and speaks Spanish as his first language, so I hope to be able to send him short, easily digested books. Thanks!
  12. By the way, the Adderall has been working great the last few months. I am going to try to increase the dosage slightly when I see my doctor this week. I feel about 60-75% of where I would like to be, and the doc wants the meds to get me to 80% as long as the side effects are bearable.
  13. It caused overheating and sweating for me. I would pour sweat just walking to my car for example. About 10 steps into a jog I would be bright red and sweating like crazy. Also, it seemed to have no effect on my ADHD symptoms. Loving the Adderall XR though. Causes my already mildly high blood pressure to be a bit higher, and I have had a small bit of weight loss due to eating less (which is good, because I tend to eat out of boredom anyway and need to lose weight) More info on my Concerta experience here: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=352820
  14. I tried Concerta and it made it impossible to exercise. I have been on Adderall XR for a while now and it is great!
  15. I'm tntgoodwin. I'm a dad to the three princesses in my signature, and husband to their mother. I am in the military, and grew up as a military brat. Lived all over the place. Both dw and I were homeschooled (her for her whole school career, me just 11-12th grade), and we homeschool our oldest because the schools here do not impress us. Dw does not want to homeschool the children all the way through high school. We will probably stop once we relocate to somewhere that has decent public schools, or until my job allows us to afford a decent private school.
  16. Congrats to him! :cheers2: We had a bunch of people make it here in our squadron. 22.7% of all test takers were selected, but 50% of those who tested from our squadron made it. Which makes me happy for our squadron, but doubly bummed for those that didn't make it this time. For our career field, apparently the cut-off jumped about 15 points from last year for Tech! In a couple months I get to find out if I made the cut or not, for the first time.
  17. I'm in Hawaii and I prefer to wear jeans and black t-shirts most of the time myself.
  18. I know there are several Eastern Orthodox believers here, so I found this post interesting. http://www.reclaimingthemind.org/blog/2012/06/credo-house-dispute-our-discussions-today-with-an-eastern-orthodox-priest/ :001_smile:
  19. That sounds like they have only one (broad) issue with the church, and that is that they prefer a family-integrated church, and they see that as biblical. From what you wrote, every issue goes right back to that. To me anyway, it doesn't sound like a bunch of problems that they are trying to do the exact opposite, just one. Imagine if you were attending a church that required everyone to attend services standing on their heads. Then you go to a church that requires everyone to attend standing on their feet, and they decide they prefer that way. Everything about your old church seems completely upside-down at that point, right? In reality, only one thing is different that everything is somewhat related to. ^no idea if that analogy makes sense or not...
  20. There was some controversy regarding them a couple months back... http://www.lifenews.com/2012/04/20/thirty-one-gifts-admits-funding-pro-planned-parenthood-groups/ If things like that are important to you.
