  1. My DD is turning 4 next month and she's starting Kindergarten with me on Monday. If the child is ready for the material, there's no reason to wait.
  2. Are you from West Warwick, Rhode Island? Because I could have written this post myself. I feel like putting my head in my hands and crying right now. We are in the fight of our lives thus far in our homeschooling journey.
  3. Me too! We've been getting teased with cooler weather, but then today it's back up to 83*. I can't wait for the crisp cool weather already!
  4. Ours is "Holy Trinity Academy". We also have a symbol for our homeschool. I was trying to come up with the perfect school name and prayed to the Holy Spirit about it. Holy Trinity was the first thing that popped in my head so I went with it. We love it! We have shirts made up with it and everything.
  5. You didn't have an other. I chose that my husband loves my hair long, but I've never had long hair. Ever. My hair is almost as short as a brush cut I suppose you could say. I HATE long hair. Absolutely detest the feeling of it on me. I love long hair on others and think it looks beautiful, but just not for me. My husband would be willing to pay for an entire day at an expensive spa if I would grow my hair out. It's just not me.
  6. Okay, so let's say mom plugs baby's mouth and goes to answer the door. Baby starts choking on the liquid and dies. Mom sues product maker. Why is everything else more important to mothers today except actually CARING for their babies?!!!
  7. I can answer only my beliefs on the Genesis account. I know that God exists outside of time. So to Him, one million years could be a "day". He was trying to break things down for the people of that time, that weren't all that smart. They were a primitive people and could grasp very little in the way of understanding. This is told to me by my parish priest. I've had many long discussions with him about this and it would just boggle your head if I went to far into things. :tongue_smilie:
  8. :iagree: I have all three volumes. I bought them when everyone started raving about them. I feel as though I'm thumbing through a manual written in Aramaic every time I try to consider using it. It's just not how I function.
  9. I've looked into them before, but wasn't sure about the cartoonish parts of the program. I'm not sure how my kids will respond to it. (Where's the shrugging shoulders when you need it) :glare:
  10. Yes, I have used CHC in the past and while it was very good, it was hard to implement with two children at different levels. I'm thinking I'm going to be going with Elemental Science myself. I know that she tries very hard to leave religion out of her science books. I think this particular stance will hurt Apologia in the future with prospective customers.
  11. It could be a little laziness on my part, but you may be right.
  12. Do you know how many Catholics (and non-Catholics alike) would be eternally grateful to you? I really think you should consider it. There is not much available to homeschoolers in the way of good science.
  13. I agree with all of you. There is so much orange highlighting crossing major areas out that so much of the book is missing. I'm hoping that other books in the series is not so heavy with creation talk, but I'm afraid to take the chance. I wish she would have kept her opinions and beliefs separate from the actual SCIENCE! If you're going to write a science book, just state the facts!
  14. This is the problem I've had. I've Behold and See in the past, and although liked it, it was not adaptable to all ages. I don't know what to do.
  15. I am a Catholic with an Old Earth View. Now, I LOVE Apologia Science because of the story and narrative style. It fits into the Charlotte Mason way of learning that we love. BUT Jeannie's view has overtaken her views of science itself. She downs any sort of proof that would lean towards the earth being old and places all of her scientific theory on the Bible. I LOVE the Bible, I read it nightly. But I don't put the Bible up against science. They are not at odds with each other, but they compliment each other. If you are old earth and use the explorer series, how to you work around her views on almost every page. My children love the books, and I'd hate to have to switch. Besides, I have NO CLUE what I'd switch to?! How can she write science textbooks and then tout that the sun is not old, and have excuse after excuse about why there are sunspots. Why the sun cannot be that old and the moon etc.. It seems to me that she is writing young earth creation books, and not "science" books. We're studying Astronomy right now and I've had to cross out so many paragraphs in that book, that sometimes I wonder if it's even worth doing them at all.
  16. Unless your kids are really into bird and insects, you could probably skip zoo 1 without a problem. I would definitely do astronomy though so that they can at least know the basics about the solar system we call home.
  17. :iagree: I agree with this totally. Now if I had two pictures of myself handy I'd prove it!
  18. I'm so, so sorry. I lost my dad last June and although the pain has passed, the memories never will. Please take care and keep your sights on your own precious children. Your DH and children will help you through this.
  19. I think you already know what the answer is. I didn't read about the destruction of your things in the other thread, but it sounds to me like she doesn't care about what her children and animals destroy while visiting your home. Frankly I'm not a dog person, but is there a reason you have to continue getting these animals together? It sounds like you're miserable when she visits, so why even bother?
