  1. Persephone is a beautiful name! MIL did the same thing, each one was "that's a terrible name" or "my, what an ugly name" until one of our later dd's where she flipped a gasket. Cried, said she'd have a horrible life with that name, etc. Over the top. Way bigger reaction than the others, and I think it might have been because, like your Persephone, our dd's name is classic but rarely heard today. I think she just had never heard it before, unlike the others which she just personally found "ugly". I won't mention her preferences here (she was quite vocal and insistent about them) out of sensitivity to others, but let's just say they were both names of teen pop stars at the time we were naming children.
  2. Thanks for the little kick in the pants today Jean :001_smile:. Did science with ds6, which actually qualifies me for some kind of hero badge, 2 loads of laundry, and some progress made on the junk-on-the-floor issue. Wouldn't have done any of this without this thread - thanks <3
  3. I wasn't going to. I had a biopsy yesterday and they give me Versed which makes me forget the whole day BUT I have a vague memory of awakening mid procedure, tube down my throat, fighting with them. And today, sure enough, I have such a horrible sore throat (which I've never had with other biopsies) along with the Versed headache I usually get. So I was going to skip today, other than my gig as my daughters' chauffeur. Sit on my bed. Eat something cold. Dd 12 did ds 6's math with him this morning without my asking her. But y'know what? I saw this thread and thought, "I can do it. I can do a couple of things." I have some junk on the floor of my bedroom remaining from de-cluttering our garage, I think I'll work on that a bit before :driving:, and a load or two of laundry won't kill me. And I'll even do science with ds6 :Angel_anim:
  4. :grouphug: Yikes that's got to be hard for you as a mama, as well! Scary. So glad she's OK.
  5. :iagree: I've been avoiding Facebook for a couple of months because of having friends way to the right, way to the left, and all vocal :tongue_smilie:. I'm glad they're passionate, but I'm personally hiding out from it all at this point :leaving:
  6. 1. Sesame seed allergy is super tough. They're hiding in so many foods you'd never suspect and often unlabeled - this article briefly describes the problem. 2. If you have to use the EpiPen, you need to go to the ER. This has been said above, but I wanted to say it again. Reactions can be bi-phasic. You think you've fixed it, but you've just taken care of the first hump with another coming. For this reason I'd never drive one of my reacting allergic children to the ER alone in a car.
  7. It was on our short list (final 4) for the last few pregnancies. Love. But then, our little guys have dreadlocks . . . perhaps dh smoked a little too much ganga way back in the day :D
  8. Ooo, I love it when people share my weird beliefs :D. I kill watches, too, even one very expensive one. Although I cause them to run farther and farther behind until they die - slow deaths.
  9. :grouphug: I'm selling off stuff from a different dream. It's hard - you've put so much time into the research, the planning, the dreaming out different scenarios. Hopefully the "sweet" in the bittersweet will become more and more apparent for you in this new chapter of your life. :grouphug: PS: I went to Hillsboro high schools back when the earth was still cooling and turned out semi-OK ;)
  10. My little girls (11 & 12) like all of the games listed in my first post to this question, except Star Wars. They play with it fully as much as the boys, at least when their asthma is under control.
  11. Yeah, I get the phishing attempt "comments" with the links, too - but this is just looking at the URL's that are listed as the referral source for my blog visitors. Oh well - the worst they can get off that one is a thorough inventory of my pots and pans :tongue_smilie:. I *had* posted pics of my dd's baking cupcakes early on, but those posts have no pageviews. I guess I'll :chillpill: and just not get curious about where my traffic is coming from!
  12. It's our 13 year old son who loves this one most. I asked him and he says, "I'd say 9 to 17" although I must admit our 6 year old ds plays it, too. I don't know how typical we are, though, because we don't/haven't had any other gaming systems and they don't have any Xbox 360 games that aren't Kinect. So my son might find things super fun that are boring for other children, I don't know.
  13. Kinectimals looked so cute and got good reviews, but isn't played around here, either. We like Sports Season 1 and Sports Season 2 if we're all playing together. The children like playing the Pixar one, "Kinect Rush", together. Popular two-player ones here are Star Wars, Dance Central (although we have weird rules about songs that have to have lyrics muted :D), Sonic Freeriders, and Disneyland Adventures
  14. I wanted to highlight this. I can't tell you how many times I've been told that my dc "can't" be allergic to the peanut oil in a commonly prescribed scalp oil, Derma-Smoothe, but they weren't there when dd had a horrifying reaction, I was. Infusium 23 products use arachidic acid, which is the fat from peanuts. And treenut allergies add a whole layer to the shampoo/lotion label reading. :grouphug: I remember the anger, and sometimes 8 years into this it still comes in brief flashes, but mostly it will become a normal part of life eventually.
  15. Oh yikes, that's worse :grouphug:. I have a family blog, too, and haven't gotten anything like that over there. Which is why I'm so mystified here. I literally use recipe titles and descriptions of food! And this twitter site had no words (as I saw in the nanosecond it took me to register what that was) just very graphic p*rn photos. The only keyword search I have on the dashboard is "ricotta rosemary zucchini" which I'm thinkin' is a different audience than the one I'm currently worried about ;)
  16. I have a dinner blog . . . you know, where I'm trying to learn to cook better and talking about what I cook. So I had a modest little bump in pageviews, and I was looking at my blogger dashboard to see where they were originating. "Well, look!" I said to my naive little self, "Four pageviews from this referring twitter URL, let me see who's said something about my blog!" :ack2: :ack2:   :ack2: :ack2: I saw the horrifying p*rn photos loading and SHUT that tab as quickly as I could, then went right to "history" and deleted everything from the last hour. What on earth? What does this mean? Why would that show as a referring URL? And is there something else I need to do beyond clearing my cache/history to sanitize my computer (thinking of grabbing a lysol can . . .) I've gotten spam comments on my blogs before, you know, the kind where someone says you have the most insightful comment ever, and please to visit my link . . . those I know not to click, and to delete, but this one is new to me. heeeeellllllllllllllllllppppppppppppppppppppppp
  17. Lynne, Are you on the Yahoo list specific to your cancer? On the Yahoo list I'm on for my specific cancer, there are a couple of people going to the Cleveland Clinic, and mine is a tiny list 'cause it's a rare cancer. If you signed up, you could get knowledgeable recommendations for oncologists with great reputations at that clinic. Seems like a speedy way to go for this! And :grouphug:. I had a fabulous oncologist and he got sent somewhere else (I have to use the military hospital). I have now been switched to the one other oncologist there, and he could care less and keeps telling me info I know to be untrue - when called on specifics, it's "years of experience" :tongue_smilie:. But at least he's not nasty like yours, yikes. I totally agree with others who point out that you want to sort this issue now - how awful would it be to have to deal with it AS you're dealing with chemo?
  18. The Miracle brand rice cooker (stainless steel inside) gets good Amazon reviews and is the same price as the Oyama (at least off and on). I've worked hard to get non-stick out of my kitchen, too! Link: http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Steel-Cooker-Model-Formerly/dp/B000I5UEQM/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
  19. Dh flies Jet Blue and Southwest only, after miserable experiences with other airlines. He's never had a bad experience with Jet Blue.
  20. We have serious cross-contamination issues here and just get visibly different wooden spoons (dark wood vs. light wood). The "allergic" spoons get handwashed on their own without being tossed in with other dishes.
  21. Here is an article from Bastyr, the naturopathic college, about IgG testing, which I'm guessing is the blood test to which you refer. Actual allergy (like classical food-allergy) testing is the immuno-CAP RAST which tests IgE levels. Don't think that's the one you mean. http://www.tldp.com/issue/174/IgG%20Food%20Allergy.html I think this is controversial. But I did personally find that article quite useful. In our family, we decided it didn't really matter. I have a daughter whose stomach hurts and she gets nauseated when she eats gluten, so really, it's just a question of feeling better or not.
  22. What wonderful news! It was caught so early - I'll bet in retrospect you're so thankful for that abdominal pain that got you in (well, that's how I feel anyway, it was abdominal pain that got me in, too). What a vast relief for you. Great news :001_smile:.
  23. No clue, but my goats lick my arms when they can reach them, too (when they're not trying to eat my hair, anyway). I've been assuming it's the saltiness?
  24. My first thought was, "doesn't everyone have 4 dozen eggs in their fridge?" ;). When we have extra eggs someone makes pudding . . . shoot, now I'm craving pudding :tongue_smilie:
