  1. I don't remember what year we started following the WTM cycles . . . 1999 or 2000 . . . anyway, I had too many children to do them separately. So we just started with the ancients, everyone at their own ages. Young siblings just jump in when they reach first grade. Kindergarten we only do a pre "what is history" kind of general exposure. So this does mean that some of them have started "in the middle" or start high school not-in-ancients, but that has proven to not be an issue, and at the high school level there are actually some benefits to not beginning in ancients. I'll bet your little one will listen in if you begin cycle one next year, and she'll still get the same info when you cycle through again, so she can listen at a "fun" level as a preschooler, ie, lots of crafting :)
  2. I used Saxon with the eldest and TT Alg1/2/Geometry with the next two, and all three had almost identical placement scores into cc precalculus, and did similarly well in their precalculus classes when at cc. Not one of those three are hugely math-y.
  3. My I-assume-he's-last son starts kindergarten this fall. Even though he's our eighth, each child is so different that there are always, always new challenges! This little guy has graduated out of speech therapy but still has expressive and receptive language delays, so still plenty to be nervous about, and learn how to teach to.
  4. Yep, I was just going to post what Annie did. I, too, phoned Amazon when my son got the free year of Prime for a .edu address. They told me it was fine to use his account to order. My credit card is listed, stuff comes to our home, just that notices go to his .edu address. One difference between a free Prime account, though, is you don't get the free streaming video like you do if you have a paid Prime account.
  5. It's here, Elizabeth. Haven't seen an official notice yet, but in May when my dd was enrolling for her fall courses, her adviser (who we've dealt with for years with our dc) told us that there would be one in fall; they're just hammering out the details. One thing I'm seeing here is an exponentially increasing student population and fewer and fewer courses. The catalog of course offerings are smaller every term. My dc are right on it, getting the first available advising appts each term to be able to register for classes as early as possible, and still so frustrating. DD has been waitlisted for Chem 161 twice and this term would have been waitlist number 24 (about 3 or 4 waitlists get in each term).
  6. Can I ask about how much time per day I should schedule in for this? I'm working on some very rough block scheduling and am ordering this for the little guy. Obviously this varies - I'm just looking for a ballpark.
  7. :smilielol5: bwa ha ha . . . thanks for that scary memory!
  8. Don't have an answer, but I do include many/most of the questions from Luther's Small Catechism off and on over the years, both for discussion and memorization. If you don't have a copy, it is online now http://www.lutheran.co.uk/docs/Small%20Catechism.pdf Looks like here is a for-pay catechism class: http://smallcatechism.org/ but I know nothing about it . . . Uncle Google just found it for me :D. I'll be interested to see what others have used :lurk5:
  9. Had my last at 45 . . . would welcome any others we were blessed with. Had my last pregnancy last year at 49, but miscarried. When I was having babies in my 30's, and so many thought that was "so old", I assumed that how tired I felt (middle children, toddlers, pregnancies) would exponentially increase as I aged and if I had imagined having a baby at 45 I would have imagined myself uber-exhausted. But that's kind of not how it works. I'm about as tired now as I was then :D.
  10. Because all of my children study the same cycle at the same time, that means that most of them haven't done the ancients cycle in 9th grade (although that has happened - just the luck of the draw). I actually think those that DO have ancients in 9th have it a little harder. Yes, the modern cycle is dark. But like others have pointed out, there is a ton of mature content in the ancient readings as well, plus the language is more challenging on top of this, even reading translations. Medieval brings other challenges - our experience here has been that the easiest cycle at the high school level is cycle 3. Would love to hear from others who have cycled through several high schoolers to see if our experience is unique! :lurk5:

  12. We still use it here, but I'm not much help as far as scheduling. I have three who move through it together, and we do some every day, but once we move through the foundational book of a level, the children choose which book we'll use each day. Then one sentence from the practice book. So we don't formally schedule out the books, although we get through them. MCT really works for us, at least for the last two years that we've used it. Can't see switching.
  13. My just-finished-9th-grade dd used TMM Spanish this last year after hating Rosetta Stone. She by far preferred TMM. OTOH, my just-finished-6th-grade ds stalled out fairly early with TMM and preferred Rosetta Stone's approach - he found the writing/spelling portions of TMM too "hard". I would've pushed it but personally view grade school language as just exposure - he'll get it again in a couple of years. I like TMM for older students and Rosetta Stone for younger ones here in our house :-)
  14. :001_wub::001_tt1::hurray: Year after year, I've done this with a stack of 36 photocopied blank Sonlight schedule pages per child. Until 2 years ago, when I got HST+. I was just trying to talk myself into once again doing the nightmare of scheduling HST+ (I have to re-learn it each summer) but was really leaning toward the pencil-and-blank-page again. You are my new hero :001_tt1:. Thank you thank you thank you. (And PS: my dh just graduated nursing school after having left the military a few years ago, like yours. He, too, started making Master's noises right away until he saw the insane look in my eye . . . I'm almost better now, and that was 2008, so there's hope ahead for you. After a few years of recovery ;))
  15. We used the programs at Microsoft Dreamspark through Homeschool Co-op in addition to "Head First Java" and "Sam's Teach Yourself Java in 24 Hours". She was more interested in creating a website so we also got a domain and hosting for her to play with. She was more interested in html and Java, but Dreamspark has a bunch of tutorials for C++ as well. She used other tutorials at Microsoft's website that I don't remember in the beginning of the year to ramp up, like Digigirls etc.
  16. We just watched the 1953 version (B&W) of Julius Caesar to wind up ancient lit. Fab version. Rationalizing Shakespeare in Ancients: Julius Caesar totally deals with the thematic elements they're reading about in other ancient lit, like personal desires vs. duty to state, emerging notions of honor, the hero, etc. And set in ancient Rome <-----silly me.
  17. We don't currently have any gaming systems in the house, but I'm :banghead: about PE. I was considering homeschool YMCA again, but we did that a few years back and it just took SO much time out of the week. And we've done various things over the years like hooping, fitness DVDs, etc. I have 3 children with an immune disorder that has them ill much of the year, so I hate to commit financially to any outside lessons like gymnastics/soccer/whatever where they're sure to miss a lot of this. Anyway, questions about Kinect are: Are the available games like tennis, Kinectimals, fitness an adequate option for twice/three times a week PE? Are these games that would get boring after a month or so (keeping in mind that my dc don't have a game system so they're not jaded)? Is there some better option I've been missing all these years? Thank you hive :grouphug:
  18. I'm not going to divulge SAT scores, but I will say that our eldest, who used Saxon in high school, and our next two, who used TT through high school, all placed into precalculus when they did the placement test into community college, and all three got good grades in precalc. The two who used TT actually scored higher in the placement tests, but I'd have to dig out eldest's SAT scores to compare his with #2 . . . #3 hasn't taken it yet. Eldest did end up entering into an Industrial Engineering program, but switched to Computer Science . . . kind of peripherally mathy. For me - college math was far too long ago for me, and although I really respect Saxon in the high school years, it does (IMO) need a teacher fluent in the subject. We ended up hiring a tutor for 2 years for the son who did Saxon. That's the primary reason I love TT for high school - does the job on it's own without a teacher on hand. That said, dd #4 is ahead of her siblings' curve in math and we're switching to Lial for pre-calc and "regular" Calculus at cc.
  19. We've never used a boxed curriculum here for high school. The two who have graduated so far have gotten into/scholarship offers for each university they applied to. I have two daughters also in high school currently. So - it's worked here. My children so far have had really differing aptitudes and interests, so I wonder if we could've found a boxed curriculum to be happy with for all of them.
  20. This. I'm in Washington, and the University of Washington *does* accept most CC classes for transfer, and does NOT accept CLEP scores. Second son just got accepted at his first choice school, Pacific Lutheran, and most of his CC classes will transfer in. Which is an entirely different subject than what get them admitted, and that is, as the above poster notes, a whole palette from good letter of recc from outside sources, test scores SAT/AP/ACT/SAT subject, extra curriculars, the whole thing.
  21. Washington State here . . . Free for public/private/homeschool, 15 credit hours per term, but the student does need to pass an entry exam (basic reading/math) initially and maintain a certain GPA while in the program. Everyone pays for textbooks, but some CC's have some low-income programs for loaner texts. Homeschool parents act as high school "advisor" for students and sign off on course choices.
  22. Eldest Son is now graduating college, in a mathy major. He used Saxon through high school, first with me (agony), then we hired a tutor. Did Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Advanced Math, then tested in to pre-calc in college. Son # 2 used TT Algebra 1, Algebra 2, then tested into the same pre-calc class as DS#1, taking the same placement test. He had not done Geometry. First term of pre-calc was a little rough, but since then, into calculus, he's done great in math; A's. I'm still making him do TT Geometry this summer :-) Next up: Dd did TT Algebra 1 and Algebra 2, some of Geometry, and tested into pre-calc too, beating both ds's score :D. So that's not compared to everything, but compared to Saxon, we got comparable results in this family, and all tested into college pre-calc and so far have done well in those college math courses. Kim
