  1. A few years back, I remember Nancy Pearl addressing this topic in her book, "Book Crush." I also remember reading an article, in which J.K. Rowling recommended children begin reading HP at the age of 11yo (The same age HP is when the story begins.) Then progress through the series with one new book each year. The idea was to have the reader "grow up" alongside HP. John Granger aka Hogwarts Professor addresses questions parents have about HP on his website http://www.hogwartsprofessor.com Warm Regards, Kathy :001_smile:
  2. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: I empathize. Our family finally reached the limit with "drama" from my in-laws. In the end, we decided to distance ourselves from them, as it is best for our family. Dh telephones his parents twice a month to stay in touch. Once a year we visit for the annual family reunion. I am so sorry you are having to go through this. Praying for you. Warm Regards, Kathy :001_smile:
  3. As a child I read Alfred J. Church's version of "The Iliad for Boys and Girls." I also like Roger Lancelyn Green's "The Tales of Troy." Dd is gravitating towards Padrick Colum's "The Children's Homer." Warm Regards, Kathy :001_smile:
  4. We used the book list for BF American History Early and Intermediate. Have you looked at Christine Miller's book "All Through the Ages?" Rainbow Resource Center sells it for $27.95. It was the best money I spent on a history resource! Warm Regards, Kathy :001_smile:
  5. Thank you for sharing! Warm Regards, Kathy :001_smile:
  6. Our casting sticks are craft sticks. One side of the stick is colored red, the other side is colored black. (The museum staff used non washable magic markers.) Our Senet game is featured as my avatar. Warm Regards, Kathy :001_smile:
  7. A+ Helen! Thank you for sharing! Warm Regards, Kathy :001_smile::001_smile:
  8. Hugs!:grouphug: I emphathize with your situation. Dd had a similar experience with SOTW. Dh and I decided to use V.M. Hillyer's "A Child's History of the World" by the Calvert School over a two year period. CHOW immediately clicked with her. During the two year period CHOW was read at least 3 times, maybe 4. Dd who is now a fifth grader is loving SOTW! Warm Regards, Kathy :001_smile:
  9. Hello WTM Families, Here is a fun way to explore Egyptian history and culture. This has become one of our favorite family games! Warm Regards, Kathy :001_smile: http://www.ehow.com/how_5097392_play-senet.html
  10. Hello Eveyone, I will not be able to participate in the group due to the schedule of our academic year. Warm Regards, Kathy
  11. Hello Lisa, Several years back I had Dd do "First Language Lessons" (The edition with the little boy holding the butterfly on the cover.) Then she moved onto "Comic Strip Grammar" followed by "The Complete Book of Grammar" along with "Writing With Ease." I gave her the assessment test for WWE Level 2. Based upon the results we decided to "begin at the beginning" with WWE Level 1. Have you read SWB's hardback copy of "The Complete Writer: Writing with Ease?" If not, I highly recommend reading the hardback copy before purchasing student/teacher materials. In the book SWB explains the "theory" for her writing series, which I found to be quite helpful. I have written an in-depth review of the book at http://www.amazon.com if you would like to read through it. Warm Regards, Kathy :001_smile:
  12. Our family is using "Telling God's Story" Year Two as our morning devotional and LOVING it! Thank you to Peter Enns and Olive Branch Books! :001_smile:
  13. I thought the same thing too! :D Dd is doing a unit study on chocolate which a friend of mine wrote called "Gulliver's Guide to Chocolate."
  14. Hello Anna, Dd (12 yo) has been working through the "Critical Thinking Series" published by Remedia Publications. When she is finished with the series, she will be moving onto "Critical Thinking Book 1" by Anita Harnadek. (Available for previewing at http://christianbook.com) A fun way to teach logic is to have the student solve mysteries. Dd is presently enjoying "You're the Detective" by Lawrence Treat. The Veritas Press website has several mystery books listed in their curriculum syllabus. http://vertiaspress.com Warm Regards, Kathy :001_smile:
  15. Count me in! Dh and I formed our philosophy of education from a CM/Classical combination perspective. My maternal grandmother was taught with CM and I am related to CM through my paternal grandparents. :)
  16. Living books are usually written by one person who has a passion for the subject and writes in conversational or narrative style. The books pull you into the subject and involve your emotions, so it’s easy to remember the events and facts. Living books make the subject “come alive.†They can be contrasted to dry writing, like what is found in most encyclopedias or textbooks, which basically lists informational facts in summary form. You might be surprised to find that living books are available for most school subjects — even math, geography, and science! From "Simply Charlotte Mason"
  17. Thank you for starting this thread! Another resource you may want to look at is "How to Introduce Your Child to Classical Music in 52 Easy Lessons." The resource is available at either www.amazon.com or www.emmauelbooks.com :)
