  1. Here is a link to their website: Little Homestead in the City
  2. The attention I was able to give my daughter during the school day was the only good thing to come out of my son's year in kindergarten. :)
  3. I clean obsessively (why ship dirt?) but that's about it. We don't own anything particularly valuable, so I just make sure the Christmas ornaments aren't anywhere near the power tools (can anyone guess how I learned that lesson? ;) ) and leave it at that.
  4. My daughter liked the All Creatures Great and Small series by James Herriot at that age.
  5. Looks fine to me - your plan is similar to mine, though I probably won't award a high school credit for Bible, and government will be incorporated into our Great Books study.
  6. My eldest is only 14, but so far, so good!
  7. That's a good point! I've never cared much for curriculum hopping, so I find myself unable to participate in many discussions about the new and exciting programs out there. P.S. We use Saxon and Rod & Staff!
  8. Oh! Well, that's a little different. :) I would share that information if asked.
  9. I used to be very open, but learned to be more guarded after a few years of being criticized for my "unreasonable expectations."
  10. Saxon Advanced Math Henle Latin Book 2 Athenaze Greek Book 1 Rod & Staff English 9 Classical Rhetoric With Aristotle; Cothran Socratic Logic; Kreeft Great Books (as described in The Well-Trained Mind) Geology (a two semester version of my one semester college course) Fine Arts: piano, drama PE: sailing, scuba, personalized exercise program
  11. No. I would probably not even give one credit for both unless I called the class something like Introductory Latin.
  12. I don't have a grown child, but I am a grown child. My relationship with my mother hasn't changed much; I still ask for whatever I feel like eating, and she still makes whatever she feels like making. :D
  13. Last year my 10 year old spent about twenty hours on academic work, seven hours on piano practice, and seven hours on dance per week.
  14. Latin didn't stick with us until we started doing it right after math. Problem solved! We've done Latin every school day for years now.
  15. My 11 year old dances, bakes, plays piano, collects insects, makes iPod playlists, knits, and reads science books. All of this takes second fiddle to playing at the beach, though. She seems to be happiest there.
  16. Hawaii. This is the law: Parents must keep “a record of the planned curriculum†which must include the commencement date and ending date of the program, number of hours per week of instruction, subjects to be covered, method used to determine mastery of materials and subjects in the curriculum, and a list of textbooks or other instructional materials. This list shall be in standard bibliographical format. Generally, the author, title, publisher and date of publication should be indicated. Rules, § 8-12-15 Sorry; I see now that lesson plans aren't required. While in my PCS fog I decided that writing lesson plans would be the easiest way to keep track of all the required information - I had no idea how many hours we spend on instruction per week, much less when we started or finished a program! Then, as I was writing the lesson plans, my brain must have decided that lesson plans were REQUIRED BY LAW, otherwise I wouldn't be doing all this unnecessary work. So I don't need lesson plans! I can just say we spend 6 hours a day on academics and use written examinations for mastery and leave it at that. :D Thank you so much for asking for clarification, Chris! I feel stupid, but so relieved.
  17. I'm doing the same thing. This is my first time living in a state that requires lesson plans, and it is NOT cool.
  18. I'm on Ravelry. http://www.ravelry.com/people/DuckSoup There is a WTM group on Ravelry as well. http://www.ravelry.com/groups/well-trained-knitters
  19. You follow the laws of the state you are living in. We haven't homeschooled overseas, but my understanding is that you follow DoD policy (homeschooling is allowed.)
  20. If you liked Cantor, try The Last Knight: The Twilight of the Middle Ages and the Birth of the Modern Era. It got HORRIBLE reviews on Amazon, but it will take you all of an hour to get through. ;)
  21. I've never found a co-op that could stand up to what we do at home and we've had some unpleasant experiences with support groups, so we usually go it alone. But I've been feeling a little insecure lately (we just moved to Hawaii and my son will be in 9th grade next year), so yesterday I mailed an application to a local homeschool support group. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
