  1. I said "cheeky" but I can't tell if he is being rude or not. People in the street keeps asking us if is going to school. I always answered "Not yet." After all it is the school summer holidays and ds just turned 5yo two weeks ago. Regular school hasn't started around here. I am sure people are well intentioned but further comments of "What a big boy you are now. You will be going to school really soon!" and "Are you ready for school?" -don't help much. It makes it sound like school is something you have to leave the house to "get to".
  2. Yes. Someone asked me if there was something wrong with my kid :001_huh: Some proceed to explain why ps is better: "Children need to bounce of each other"). Also, "You can't home school because your ds is an only child. How is he going to learn to get along with other children?" Not forgetting the lovely and charming "You are not a teacher. You don't even have a degree!" Did I forget the annoying and intrusive: "You are like this (like WHAT?:001_huh:) because you only have one kid. You should have had more babies so you are not obssessed with the one you've got." :glare:
  3. I am very frustated with my 5yo. Every time I try to teach him something he shoots back a "You are not a teacher. You are just a mummy". The other day we were doing parts of the human body and when I corrected him he stared at me and said "You are not a doctor. You are a mummy". Is he being cheeky? What should I do? I told him mums knows a lot and I can teach him just fine but I wonder if there is a better way to handle this. Any ideas? :glare:
  4. Mostdays I take out my body shop lip and cheek stain. It doesn't look too obvious like make up and still give me a "fresh" look. I also put a tiny bit of eyeliner because I just lost a bunch of eyelashes (well, long boring story, never mind).
  5. No P.E. No dissection or experiments involving killing critters of any kind. No unsupervised field trips.
  6. I feel your pain! I was up until late trying to get our mac to "communicate" with the printer after having scanned I don't know how many pages. I mean, it is not just the time you spend scanning but the printing/troubleshooting as well. Especially as some books are a bit thick and scanning the whole page is impossible :banghead: I don't know how some mums can do the whole year in advance. I love my dh but he thinks I can sit down whip up a yearly schedule (plus printables) in a couple of hours. :tongue_smilie: He seemed genuinely surprised I am still scanning (apparently we started school this week). Think. Would you be better off using the pages of the books and then filing them away? Or do you feel you have to have the pages done in advance to have peace of mind? It is not what you do in the name of organisation. Do what works for you. IM (very) HO. But if you feel what you are doing is what you want to do, go ahead. Have a cup of tea -or something stronger. Rip pages away with gusto. Kick back and enjoy the scanning. The time you are spending in front of your pc is probably the same most mums spend taking the kids to and back from school. At least you get to browse the internet. :D
  7. I have the one with Gyo Fujikawa's illustrations. It is the only one I could find as the other (Tudor) was sold out. My dc likes the illustrations though.
  8. My kid is very much like yours. I am finding he thrives on structure. However, since he needs to learn flexibility and focus I give him "15 minute warning". This means I will warm him we are about to start a new activity up to 15 minutes before. This makes transitions better. I also make lessons short so he doesn't get too restless and distracted. As for perfectionism I try to work along side ds and sometime I "make" mistakes too so he can see we ALL make mistakes. I hope this helps.
  9. Bump. I want to hear about this. I just made my excel planner based on someone else's model and it took me ages. Also, if I add any more stuff it will not print on one page. In other words, it is not really working. So :bigear:
  10. We are in a country where private schooling is the only option for expats. (Public schools are reserved for the locals). Private schools cost around $15,000 and we just don't have it. Also, academics. And, yes, I like to spend time with my child.
  11. I am on the same quest. I adapted what I saw someone in this boards use and made it my own but it still takes ages to format. So :bigear:
  12. So proud of you. I know how hard it is to loose weight. :cheers2:
  13. I went to curriclick and I saw so many books about the human body. I'm not sure which one was the one you meant but I saw tons of different ones!
  14. Yes. Ds is "reading" things which are quite advanced. By "reading" I mean "being read to". But you are right. I downloaded some info about the standards and they sound intimidating to say the least. I am just not used to teacher's lingo I guess. Thank you so much for the link. :) I don't have access to most of th books but I have an idea how things are scheduled and work from there. I am considering doing the biology part first and then proceed with the rest of Intro to Science. I don't know if we can do everything in one year! :willy_nilly:
  15. All this pressure is something quite new. Now in Sweden children don't start reading and writing until they are 6 or something, and Sweden is 1st or 2nd in the world in literacy (they also quite very well in math and science even though they start later than many other countries). One of the beauties of home schooling is that you can teach and challenge your child at his own speed. Sometimes I think these milestones are set by people who've never seen children before.
  16. Good suggestions. I have something similar to the Teacher Created Resources (Scholastic Curriculum Bank for Science -lesson plans). It does have a printable of a human body. I'll see if I can find LRFO books too. Thanks for the help. :001_smile:
  17. There is briem handwriting (http://briem.net/). The website has a free italic font, lessons, etc. It is a bit angular but very nice. Mind you, most people personalise their handwriting with time. However, if your dc has already started GD and you are set on it, Startwrite is a good option.
  18. Bad news for me then. I am following the UK National Curriculum (loosely) and the human body unit is included, but not some of the stuff in Intro to Science. My ds is quite passionate about the "human body" (he's got like 5 books or more and "reads" them over and over) so there is no way I can skip this part. Is the biology program for 1st grade too difficult for K?
  19. I bought and downloaded Elemental Science "Intro to Science" for my 5yo. I was really happy with it and was planning to use it as my spine until I went through the entire schedule and saw it didn't include a section of human biology. Nothing about the 5 senses and the whole thing about eating right, what is alive, and what isn't. etc. Does this curriculum assume you have taught all this material previously? If not, what do I do? Do I simply teach it as I can before starting with Lesson 1 of Intro to Science? I am simply very confused.
  20. There is MEP which is free and online (pdf files you print as you need them) which you get from http://www.cimt.plymouth.ac.uk/projects/mep/default.htm. If you email them they will send you the password for the answer keys, etc. ... or you can use something like Math Mammoth which is not free but very very inexpensive. You get a lot for your money. You will see tons of reviews of MM on this forum. You can get the CD or buy the download version (pdf format plus a worksheet generator and other extras). See http://www.mathmammoth.com. I've had no problems changing from one currency to the other. Living overseas has taught me children understand about different currencies and adapt quickly.
  21. I want it but I can't afford the whole curriculum. If I knew it was 50% off maybe but I already bought everthing for this year and went well over the budget. If I buy one more thing dh will kick me out of the house. :crying: p.s. I forgot to add I already bought 1-A light blue series a couple of moths ago.
