ktgrok replied to Moxie's topic in General Education Discussion Board
um,mammal is just a descriptive term for a creature that gives live birth, lactates, and has fur. We give birth to live young, lactate, and have fur, therefore we are mammals. There is no belief or unbelief about it.- 189 replies

I'm seriously losing my mind....

praying hard. -
How about one of you teaching school? In my state anyone with a bachelors degree, in ANYTHING can teach. They just have to pass a test on the subject they want to teach (and there are study guides I believe) and then they have a few years to get certified, while they are teaching. They take a few classes and that is it. Just a thought.

Voting and Identification.....
ktgrok replied to Momof3Maidens's topic in General Education Discussion Board
This is the thing. First, no actual problem in the first place...it just is NOT happening people. There is no proof of it. And certainly not enough to influence an election. However, there ARE enough people without ID to change the course of an election, if they can't vote. People like the elderly, who have moved, lost their birth certificate, and can't get an ID from the state without one. These are not people with computer access that can track down the cerk of the court or health department or whatever across the country that may have their birth certificate, IF they can still get it. Not to mention even if they track it down they have to pay for it. Or the poor, that don't have a ride to the health department, even if it is local, to get a copy, then another ride to go get the ID. Or the working class that can't afford to take a day off work to go track down and wait in line for their birth certificate and then ID. (it can take HOURS for both here). PUt all those impediments together and there are people that will NOT be able to realistically vote. And that is wrong. It goes against everything I believe in. And all this to stop voter fraud that has no actual documentation of happening? -
Voting and Identification.....

yes, but to get that free ID you need your birth certificate, which is NOT free, and hard to get for say, the elderly that have moved far from where they were born. -

they are not talking about your voter card. They are talking about picture ID, like driver's license. -
Voting and Identification.....

Voter fraud, in the sense of someone showing up as someone else, is TINY. ID laws, on the ohter hand, affect large numbers of people. Particularly the eldery and the poor, who can't afford, or can't manage, to track down and pay for a birth certificate if it has been lost, stand in line somewhere, miss work etc just to get an ID. I know that sounds crazy, but that IS the truth. -

I know a boy that just started as a junior, after being homeschooled all his life, and the school had no problem with it. That is in Central Florida.

aww, hugs. I get it. I really do. My sister and BIL have a much much nicer home than we do. But, they are not financially responsible, or mature, and it kills my DH to see them keep lucking into good things when he works so hard and is so responsible and has less. But I am home with our kids, and that matters more to us than big closets and bathrooms. Although I'd LOVE one of those jacuzzi tubs someday! Oh well...like I said, time with my kids makes me richer than any house could.

Tell me about your Thanksgiving....
ktgrok replied to soonermomma's topic in General Education Discussion Board
It will me my immediate family, my sister and her family, and my parents. We will have (I imagine...it is at my sister's this year but usually she still makes me cook): roast turkey, stuffing (with the giblets), sweet potatoes mashed with brown sugar and butter (sometimes some orange juice too), topped with marshmallows, green bean casserole or some other green veggie...I started getting grossed out by green beans when pregnant for my daughter, so now it is often a spinach/mushroom casserole topped with the same fried onions crescent rolls from a can for my husband and son homemade cranberry sauce corn pie (yummy family favorite) pumpkin pie in a gingersnap crust some other dessert -

FYI, I find almond milk to be a bit sweet, depending on the brand, for potatoes. I've used just margarine (earth balance) and the water from the potatoes before with great results. Your milage may vary. -
My son, the one I posted about because he was doing so badly in math, and struggling, and arguing, and what not...he's happy to do his Teaching Textbooks pre-algebra, and is getting a solid A so far! We are only a few lessons in, but seeing him happy and confident again is priceless!!!! Thank you all so much for the advice! (I'm so thrilled I've offered him $5 for every test he gets an A on, and a bonus for an A in the course. I want him to keep up this momentum as it gets harder.)

Uni student called in a panic tonight.
ktgrok replied to Plucky's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Yup. He needs to see it I bet. A BIG desk blotter sized calendar was my friend in college. with multi colored markers. And a bunch of sticky notes. Sticky notes are the only reason I was able to hold a job, lol. I would write each task I needed to do on a note. When the job was done I threw away the note. If the note is there, you have work to do. Works better for me than a to do list by far. I am naturally VERY unorganized, but those two things saved me. -
Advice on how to get baby to sleep in crib
ktgrok replied to RainbowSprinkles's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Yes, nurse/rock/whatever to sleep, then put them in the crib. If they wake up repeat that. Or, as someone else said, get a full size bed instead. Then you can lay with them until they fall asleep, then when they are used to that you can sit with them, then gradually eventually move to a chair in their room while they fall asleep. -
Look at the amazing women around you that are older than you. I look at my midwife, who is in her 50s and gorgeous and vivacious and bright, despite, or maybe because, of her wrinkles. Those laugh lines are awesome, and show her personality. I look at other women too, and think "I want to be like them when I grow up." Embrace and recognize the beauty of age in others and it will be easier to do in yourself.

Thanksgiving/Autumn keepsake crafts?
ktgrok replied to sparrow's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I had my son make a candle holder one year. Mix white glue with dried corn and press into a paper cup. Stick a taper candle down into pretty deep, to make an indentation that will hold the candle. Let dry. Peel off the paper cup.
