  1. If your mother was normally supportive and rational I MIGHT take her feelings into consideration. But she sounds a bit um...unstable regarding your family and I wouldn't give it another thought. If it wasn't the name it would be something else. Besides, I love that name, and the myth has always spoken to me as well. Good job picking it!
  2. yup, I thought my son was just being dramatic, but he really needed help. and a curriculum switch.
  3. Mine did that, one went from 50th to 5th, one went from 90th to 50th.
  4. skin on if they are redskinned or other thin skinned potato. Peeled if they are normal idaho or russet poatoes.
  5. Although I as a general rule prefer midwives vastly, I wouldn't rule out an OB. There are SOME that are very midwife like. In your situation I'd contact your local ICAN group ASAP to get the lay of the land. It may agree with what you already know, but may not.
  6. Ok, he is supposed to soak the diaper, that is normal. Changing every 2 hours is normal. If you need to go longer than that try the Sandy's, they hold a bit more. As for the cover being wet what you need to do is alternate between two covers. So one is air drying (you can wipe it with a wipe first if you want) while you have the other one on the kid. At the end of the day put them in the diaper pail. I use a trashbag to line the diaper pail...which is just a trashcan with a lid, lol. I wash every other day. I use my normal detergent, Tide. You want something that works well in your water, so whatever gets your clothes the absolute cleanest is what you should use. Hope that helps!
  7. WHOA! Hold up lady. You are NOT being petty and shallow to want a safe, normal birth. Protecting your bodily integrity is NOT shallow or petty. So stop beating yourself up! You have every right, if not a duty, to research and plan for the best birth situation for you and that little one. So give yourself a hug, eat some chocolate, and know that we get it, and that if things were as they should be you wouldn't have to research and worry over something as simple as finding someone to respect your wishes in labor.
  8. Second practice, for a few reasons. First, there is no way you should have to put up with the second midwife at the first practice. taht is wrong. But, and this will sound awful, but you need a midwife with VBAC experience, and a lot of it. Your favorite midwife is just recently a midwife from what you said, so I doubt she has a lot of experience with VBAC patients. The reason experience is so important is it lets them relax. Midwives without VBAC experience, even GREAT midwives, tend to get nervous once a VBAC labor is actually underway. I've seen it again and again. You need to find out who in your area (and it might be a practice you haven't considered yet) has the best VBAC success rate. Contact your local ICAN chapter to get the dirt on the doctors/midwives in the area. I know my local chapter knows who has the best success rate, who has never had a succesful VBAC patient despite saying they are VBAC friendly, etc etc. Feel free to PM me with more questions. (and if you are in the Central Florida area I can give you local info, lol.) (oh, and I have had two VBACs. My c-section was failure to progress/Cephalopelvic disproportion, according to my chart, after 40 hours of labor. My first VBAC was 9 hours of labor, with a 9lb baby, and my second VBAC was 10 hours (about 3 of those were me fully dilated trying to avoid the pushing part, lol), with a 10lb 2oz baby. The baby that was the c-section was under 8lbs). Oh, and both my VBACs were at home, with a midwife that has TONS of VBAC experience.
  9. Well, we just switched to TT pre-Algebra and the difference is amazing. My son did his first test with a SMILE on his face! And yesterday he said, "I don't mind math." Seriously, if I lived near them I'd bring the company cookies. It has totally CHANGED the atmosphere in my house.
  10. Oh, I will say that although brand probably doesn't matter, please please do use a milk based formula unless there is a problem. Mammals are designed to thrive on milk from their mother, and when that is not available milk from another mammal is a LOT closer than "milk" from a vegetable like soy. The sugar should be lactose, not some weird sugar. Babies (except in life threatening rare cases) are never lactose intolerant. They CAN be allergic to milk protein from cows, but they are designed to use lactose, which is in human milk and cows milk, for energy.
  11. Not to be mean, but wanted to point out that many people say they are creeped out by milk from another human. However, when you really think about it, which is more creepy? Milk from a human breast or milk from a hairy moo cow teat? Also, not going to doubt you about not being able to nurse, I know there are many valid reasons, but for anyone else reading this, and concerned about medications and nursing, check out the Infant Risk Center, out of the University of Texas. It is the ONLY source for the actual info on how drugs are metabolized, how much is ACTUALLY excreted in breastmilk, what the half life is, what the possible risks are, etc. MOST of the time (not all, but MOST), it is healthier for baby to get milk from mom, even on meds, than formula, which also has chemicals in it. http://www.infantrisk.com (says the woman that has fed several babies other than her own via donated breastmilk)
  12. God mentions animals, but not protozoa or fungi. Does that mean that conservative Christians can't believe in fungi or protozoa, because they are not mentioned in the creation story? Or do we just acknowledge that when God was doing the Genesis stuff he wasn't doing it according to modern taxonomy.
  13. But...according to taxnomy we are animals, we meet the definition. It's just a descriptive term that means certain things, none of which have religion implication. You can have a religious belief that humans are different because they have souls, or because they are made in God's image, but being classified as an animal doesn't address that or deny that. Humans also have language, which mice don't have, but we are both animals, because the definition of animal has nothing to do with language. Just as it has nothing to do with souls, God, or anything else like that.
  14. um,mammal is just a descriptive term for a creature that gives live birth, lactates, and has fur. We give birth to live young, lactate, and have fur, therefore we are mammals. There is no belief or unbelief about it.
  15. How about one of you teaching school? In my state anyone with a bachelors degree, in ANYTHING can teach. They just have to pass a test on the subject they want to teach (and there are study guides I believe) and then they have a few years to get certified, while they are teaching. They take a few classes and that is it. Just a thought.
  16. This is the thing. First, no actual problem in the first place...it just is NOT happening people. There is no proof of it. And certainly not enough to influence an election. However, there ARE enough people without ID to change the course of an election, if they can't vote. People like the elderly, who have moved, lost their birth certificate, and can't get an ID from the state without one. These are not people with computer access that can track down the cerk of the court or health department or whatever across the country that may have their birth certificate, IF they can still get it. Not to mention even if they track it down they have to pay for it. Or the poor, that don't have a ride to the health department, even if it is local, to get a copy, then another ride to go get the ID. Or the working class that can't afford to take a day off work to go track down and wait in line for their birth certificate and then ID. (it can take HOURS for both here). PUt all those impediments together and there are people that will NOT be able to realistically vote. And that is wrong. It goes against everything I believe in. And all this to stop voter fraud that has no actual documentation of happening?
  17. yes, but to get that free ID you need your birth certificate, which is NOT free, and hard to get for say, the elderly that have moved far from where they were born.
  18. they are not talking about your voter card. They are talking about picture ID, like driver's license.
  19. Voter fraud, in the sense of someone showing up as someone else, is TINY. ID laws, on the ohter hand, affect large numbers of people. Particularly the eldery and the poor, who can't afford, or can't manage, to track down and pay for a birth certificate if it has been lost, stand in line somewhere, miss work etc just to get an ID. I know that sounds crazy, but that IS the truth.
  20. I know a boy that just started as a junior, after being homeschooled all his life, and the school had no problem with it. That is in Central Florida.
  21. aww, hugs. I get it. I really do. My sister and BIL have a much much nicer home than we do. But, they are not financially responsible, or mature, and it kills my DH to see them keep lucking into good things when he works so hard and is so responsible and has less. But I am home with our kids, and that matters more to us than big closets and bathrooms. Although I'd LOVE one of those jacuzzi tubs someday! Oh well...like I said, time with my kids makes me richer than any house could.
