  1. I used it as a supplement for my students, not the foundation. Consider the mastery and the number of total hours spent on the subject. Compare to other high school programs. Contact the company if you aren't comfortable making a decision and maybe they'll help you come to an answer.
  2. From 2008-10 we used Spanish Tell Me More for free online at Casa Grande Library. French was also available at that time. Check it out to see if it's still available. If not , check out other libraries in your area or online. You need to register first. http://cglibrary.org
  3. What would you say are the biggest pros and cons of his program? Thanks.
  4. I received a recommendation for John Bovey http://www.liveonlinemath.com from a member of another forum. She purchased the video-only option after a 2-week trial of the video/1x week group class. I'm still hoping someone who is using the 3xweek class option will surface.... "We've been using the Pre-Algebra Video course since late last summer. My son will be finished in another couple of months. We've really, really enjoyed it and I would wholeheartedly recommend his programs. You're probably aware that he has different course options. We did a trial period of the option which uses the videos plus once a week group classes. I thought they were very well done, the interaction is nifty and John is pretty good with the kids. We ended up going with the Video-only course, since it's more flexible in terms of scheduling, following the kid's lead, etc. And a little cheaper heh. This was the first year for the Pre-Algebra video course, so I've found a few typos along the way in the answer sheets, for instance. John has always been very receptive to the corrections and has asked me a few times for more in depth feedback too -- is his humour too much? does it take away from the program?, is it a good balance?, etc. So he's eager to 'get it right' and is very approachable. As for that humour -- my son LOVES it. And it's just 'enough'. Corny and silly little asides during the lectures, that break the tedium and keep it engaging. John's delivery is very dry and straightforward, so it's not like goofy, silly kind of humour, it's more like British humour, Heh. No math program is perfect for everybody, of course, and with this course there are a few things that I would have done differently, concept-wise, if I were teaching it. But that's okay -- my son is getting it, he's enjoying it. I've been very happy with it and we will probably continue to use it for Algebra next year too."
  5. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=276344 As long as you have the ISBN #s, just go to Amazon, Homeschool Classifieds, etc. to search. Homeschool Classifieds doesn't have much available now, but will in the coming months. I see an Algebra set w/ text/13 DVDs/solutions manual for $90 listed under "Houghton Mifflin", but I remember getting a set for under $50 on Amazon when I purchased mine. http://www.homeschoolclassifieds.com/curriculum.asp?lng=Math:%20Algebra,%20Calculus,%20Geometry,%20etc.&shrt=MU&page=2 Also check out WTM's sales. Some of the DVDs on our sets have been unreliable. They will work on one VCR or computer but not on another, and some not at all, even when new. We have had problems with every set we have purchased, even though they are from Houghton-Mifflin. And other than the precalculus and geometry (can't remember if geom is Houghton-Mifflin), we only use them once or twice a month. For the precalculus, we bought two sets since they were so cheap and that strategy has worked out so far. basic math Edition (6 DVD's) Teacher Edition ISBN: 978-0618202867 Student Text ISBN: 978-0618202850 pre-algebra DVD <http://www.holisticpage.com.au/HmMathInstructionalDvdSeries_%7C9780618372706>\ 9.52 TM <http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0618372636/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condit\ ion=new> $23.45 Soloutions<http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0618372652/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=\ UTF8&condition=used>(ODD Only) starting at $1.55 Text<http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0618372628/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&c\ ondition=used>-Used starting at 83 cents, yup I said cents algebra 1 Elementary Algebra the same as Algebra 1 Student textbook put out by Chalkdust ISBN-13: 978-0618107742 Student textbook for less… ISBN 9780618753536 (doesn’t say Chalkdust) Solution Guide by CD ISBN-13: 978-0618107773 Solution Guide not by CD (cheaper) ISBN: 9780618388196 Videos ISBN-13: 9780618388233 (Make sure you get 6 videos). algebra 2 Algebra 2 DVD-ISBN: 9780618306763 Text ISBN: 9780618218783 Student Solutions ISBN 978-0618218806 precalculus http://www.amazon.com/Precalculus-Limits-Graphing-Approach-dvd/dp/0618394877/ref\ =sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1205523042&sr=11-1 Precalculus With Limits: A Graphing Approach (dvd edition) (CD-ROM) # ISBN-10: 0618394877 # ISBN-13: 978-0618394876 http://www.amazon.com/Precalculus-Functions-Graphs-Graphing-Approach/dp/06183947\ 61/ref=pd_sim_b_title_2 Precalculus Functions And Graphs: A Graphing Approach (Paperback) # ISBN-10: 0618394761 # ISBN-13: 978-0618394760 http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0618394818/ref=ord_cart_shr?%5Fenc\ oding=UTF8&v=glance Study and Solutions Guide to Precalculus Functions and Graphs: A Graphing Approach / Precalculus With Limits: A Graphing Approach (Paperback) # ISBN-10: 0618394818 # ISBN-13: 978-0618394814
  6. Still searching for personal recommendations for John Bovey... Anyone use http://www.liveonlinemath.com this year? The actual online 3xweek class, not the video offerings. Thanks.
  7. We've used the Kahn videos, so perhaps things have changed since then, but... The 1st Edition of the Blue Book, NOT the 2nd edition, matches up for all 8 tests. The 2nd edition matches up to 7 tests. The 2nd edition does not contain test#1 from Kahn Academy. It will contain Kahn tests 2-8, but the test numbers will not match up. Kahn answers test #2= 2nd edition BB test 4 Kahn answers test #3= 2nd edition BB test 5, etc... Tests 1, 2, 3 of BB 2nd edition do not match up to Kahn. Edition 1 contains only 8 tests. Edition 2 contains 10 tests.
  8. There really is no prep work for us with the Chalkdust program. Just decide how many math problems your son will complete on a daily basis.
  9. We do the same--practice PSAT before 11th, practice SAT spring/summer before junior year. Ds took the Oct SAT for practice, and was happy with his score so he is done with testing. It is really nice not having to squeeze in SAT prep throughout the junior year. Try testing in October--you too may be happy with the results.
  10. http://regentsprep.org/regents/math/geometry/math-GEOMETRY.htm This is especially helpful for NYS students Hold on, as Alg 2 is better:001_smile:
  11. Our border collie is super smart as well. She lays down on her left side when we start to groom her. After we finish brushing her one side, she stands up and flops down on her right side. That still cracks us up even though she's been doing it forever. She has never learned to sleep in though. I am up at the crack of dawn-- as soon as she spots the first squirrel in the yard.:)
  12. ECs before SATs--that's very interesting. Thanks for answering!!
  13. If the ACT score is the last thing he looks at, what comes before those scores? The U of R counselors my ds has spoken to always appear most interested in my ds' SAT and SAT II scores. Thanks.
  14. I don't know. Like the others said, I did not find the EMG painful, just icky to have muscles twitching. During the nerve conduction test, they are giving you little shocks, so it may be difficult to concentrate on a book. But maybe you won't have both tests. Hope you let us know how it goes.:001_smile:
  15. Concentrate on the word. Ignore the audience. Many kids who know the words go out due to nerves.
  16. If it's a nerve conduction study, concentrate on anything else during the procedure. Use breathing exercises--anything that distracts. I think it affects everyone different, and I am a big baby when it comes to that kind of stuff. Good luck. :grouphug:
  17. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/645763-how-write-12-essay-just-10-days.html Worked for my kids.
  18. We like to give coupons for nice things we do for each other. The kids give me coupons good for a manicure, pedicure, make dinner, do laundry, etc. I'll be giving them coupons in their valentine cards tomorrow--1 hr. extra sleep, choose favorite meal for dinner, skip chores for the day, etc.
  19. Thanks for the link! I make the kids and dh some type of fun homemade card each year to complete their baskets and was really running out of ideas. This one will take a while to complete for next year. Yes, we love valentine's Day:001_smile:
  20. Yep, that was me! Thanks for all the current recommendations. Will definitely be trying out these products. Can anyone explain lidscrubbing? Thanks again!!!:001_smile:
