  1. My dd is 13 yo and LOVES her ipod touch. She is constantly listening to it or playing a game on it. She is on the computer playing around also quite a bit. Do you limit your dc's time? If so, how much? Does it effect their ability to learn? Are there any studies on it? She's very daydreamy during school. I know part of it is the age, but I wonder if it's too much exposure to music/games. Any BTDT or advice?
  2. I'm so glad for you! I know that's a weight lifted off of both your shoulders! I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to get cheap colored sunglasses to try on my dd. She does have light sensitivity and I wanted to try it out before wasting more $$ on things that don't help. Any input appreciated!
  3. Dh and I are thinking of going to the Bahamas area around April. We would most enjoy hiking and sitting on the beach. No snorkeling or boating. Any ideas? *sorry for threadjack*
  4. I'm assuming your referring to the beginning of her menstrual cycle. My dd started @ 12yo. She didn't cry. There's really nothing to cry about. We made it into a positive thing (which it is). We talked about it. We went out to eat. We did her nails and bought some manicaure stuff. I linked it to her growing up and what a positive thing that is. She has fond memories of it.
  5. My dd is the same way. We are using LOF decimals and percents right now. (She's behind in math.) I also use MM because LOF does not give enough practice problems for her. LOF does do a spiral type method which is useful, but she has to keep reviewing. That is why I also use MM and keep going back over things. FTR, dd hates math, but LOVES LOF.
  6. I agree w/ everyone else. That is a pretty pathetic attitude she has.
  7. Roanoke area hsers...my dd is 13 yo and loves music and would like to get involved in drama; preferably low key. Also, maybe singing lessons...any ideas? We don't know any hsers in the area. Thanks so much.
  8. Just keep a small, closed container of sugar in your bathroom. When you take a shower, rub on the sugar. Your skin will be super soft. I use EVOO on my face and body too, if it's dry. Organic coconut oil is also great.
  9. Please check your area for nursing jobs. People always think nursing is recession proof. It is not. I've never seen so few jobs. Getting your BSN will be quite expensive. Please check it out. Please be sure nursing is something you want. It can be a highly stressful job. I've seen brand new nurses who ended up hating it. Make sure you have the time to devote to it as well. Nursing school is a challenge and you need to pass everything at a certain level or you're out of the program. It can also be very competitive to get into. So, do your homework and make an informed decision. BTW, I'm just an LPN. I've know great wonderful and horrible LPN's, RN's, and BSN's. There's a wide variance in what you get.
  10. My daughter is very sheltered and does not text. She doesn't have any close friends. I will look at the previous one to see what the price difference is, but I think the latest one takes pics and vids. She would love that. Thanks!
  11. I'm not an electronic gadget person. So, I am considering getting her an ipod touch for Christmas. She loves music and videos. Do you need a MAC to use it properly? Also, should I just spend the extra $$ and get the latest one? Is it worth it? BTW, she's 13yo. Thanks!:bigear:
  12. Great rec's for music! I've also ordered the book "Made You Look" so that we can read it together. We are even at this moment having a heated discussion on not being able to watch iCarly. sigh. So many of the phrases she uses comes from tv. "You are ruining my life!" "I can't believe you don't trust me!" "I'll never forgive you!" ect.
  13. Wow! What great responses. I did not mean to imply that only Christians restrict access to pop culture. It was only meant to inform that there may be CC in this thread. I am talking to her about what I find problematic with her TV choices. She understands, but still wants to watch. Her music choices are not horrible. We have already eliminated the worst of it. She's restricted in her radio access as well due to lyrics. I am going to check out the books/websites listed in this thread. I told her about Christian music. She was interested in upbeat young music. Any suggestions? Also, where to begin w/ Bluegrass. She does enjoy it. She also wanted to listen to jazz. Where would be a good starting point there? I know nothing of jazz. I was thinking of doing F-451 as a RA this year. I may go ahead w/ it. So, thanks so much for all the thoughtful responses. I'm still reading them. It's nice to know I'm not the only mean mom. I think I may have bought into the "I don't want my kid to be a hs dork.", and that's why I allowed some things. So she would be able to have conversations w/ other dc. It's just not worth it. Off to read! Many thanks, Farmgirl
  14. I have a 13 yo dd. She loves pop music; mostly Disney pop singers, Taylor Swift, ect. For awhile she was listening to some of the other pop music like Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, ect. I put a stop to that after listening to the music. She also likes a few Disney channel shows like iCarly. It seems that she's picking up some sayings I don't care for and a general attitude I don't care for. She is very sheltered, an only child. I know where these things are coming from. It's not like these things are so horribly wrong, but I just have a bad feeling. She really LOVES pop music. Her time is limited listening to it. I don't want to sound strange, but sometimes I wonder if there's not more to the *electronic obsession* than meets the eye. I know some will think that's very *woo woo*, but that's ok. So, for those who have limited or eliminated these things: 1. How did you do it? 2. Why did you do it? 3. Did you replace it w/ something you thought was better/more appropriate? Feel free to add any other comments on how you arrived at your decision. It's just been bothering me a lot lately. I appreciate any and all input! Thanks, Farmgirl
  15. I don't want several spines, just one to go w/ RA's. Any input appreciated.
  16. I see the book rec'd in the catalog. Is there a chronological list so that I may organize accordingly. I have the enhance CD, but don't see this. Thank you, farmgirl
  17. My dd is only on LOF fractions/decimals, but I supplement c/ Math Mammoth. It's not enough for her. She LOVES it! She has issues c/ math and needs explanation/practice than LOF provides.
  18. Try Callanetics. You can find it used many places. Start w/ 10 in 10. There are DVDS/VCR/Book. It works. It's simple. It's cheap.
  19. My dd is. She made me leave the room cuz' I make fun of it. :D
  20. If I purchase a book, and then the seller cancels it, for ANY reason, I would leave negative feedback. Don't list it if you don't have it. It wastes my time.
  21. Is there an online place to get them? Also, how much are they?
