DD just finished LOF Pre-algebra...
wy_kid_wrangler04 replied to Heather in VA's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I also am wondering how the biology fits in! Did that replace all the negative feeback from the previous book? Is the biology told from an evolutionary standpoint or creation? Or is it left neutral? -
8th & 9th grade literature
wy_kid_wrangler04 replied to wy_kid_wrangler04's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
The introduction to literature looks very similar to what she will be doing in 7th next year, but I am going to look into the lightning literature. Thanks! -
What should I do after For Such a Time as this Literary Analysis? http://forsuchatimeasthis.com/title.php?id=27 My daughter is doing this for 7th grade next year, we will be doing Notgrass US history, World History and Government in 10, 11 & 12th grade. I know that covers American Lit, and World Lit. Would British Literature be ok for a 9th grader? But what would I do for 8th grade?

How much do you spend each year (per child)?
wy_kid_wrangler04 replied to HeidiKC's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We started homeschooling last year so this is our 2nd year. I have not hit any repeat grades yes, and next year I will start our 3rd. I am estimating about 800-1000 but that will drastically drop when we hit repeat grades. Also, I just got a copy machines so hopefully that will help with my reproducable comsumables that I can make copies of. I am MORE than willing to get suggestions myself!! -
SOTW and Apologia are both VERY good! I do both of them. I highly recommend them! If you do choose to stick with sonlight, slow it down! You are on your time frame, if you read to them on a day that is not a school day it wont hurt anything! Or if you do bedtime stories, insert a sonlight book, or story of the world. We do SOTW as a bedtime story, then I ask them questions about it during breakfast the next day. Works GREAT and they really retain alot!!!!! Let me know if that helps! But again, SOTW and Apologia are HIGHLY recommended by me!

Really Need Math Help!!!!!! PLEASE HELP!!
wy_kid_wrangler04 replied to thowell's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
What is it about Abeka that she doesnt like? I switched from Abeka to horizons and that is a great spiral approach with enough practice in the new as well as the old. However, the TE is essential to Horizons as all the teaching and directions are in that. It is not a self teaching approach. I love it!!!!!! Also singapore goes well along with Horizons, it just does not contain everything Horizons does. I would also recommend (as a supplement to break up some of the repetition) to get some math games, at her math level, and make it fun! Math is a very boring subject. Mathblaster is great for a computer game but there are all kinds of games out there. Also I would recommend (as a supplement) The Charlotte Mason living math. Its more hands on/fun. Hope this helps!!! -
Bird Study - Resources & Ideas
wy_kid_wrangler04 replied to MelanieM's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Those are very good! I would also recommend the Exploring Creation with Zoology 1-- flying creatures of the fifth day-- It is part of the young explorers series Ornithology, chiropterology, entomology and a little bit of paleontology comprises this book! This year, your students will learn about the bats, bugs, birds and some extinct flying reptiles called pterosaurs. Included in every lesson is a great narrative on the most fascinating facts in the animal biology concerning the creatures of flight. With fun activities, projects and assignments to go along with every lesson, your students will pronounce that science is their favorite subject. That is the summary from the authors website. My kids LOVED it!!!!! -

We do American history during school and world history as a family before bed as kind of a family story time. In high school we are going down to just 1 program a year but they really enjoy history right now.

WWYD in this situation (grammar)
wy_kid_wrangler04 replied to plain jane's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I wouldnt start another english, but maybe an editing program? They have quick 10minute programs that are great for quick easy practice so as not to loose the skill but not as much as a curriculum! (Didax or daily paragraph editing are good!) -
What are you doing? What are you planning to do? I will have a 7th grader next year and just wondering what you plan to do for 7th grade, what are you doing for 7th grade or what did you do for 7th grade? I think I know but I want to be sure. Curriculum that you tried and dislike?
wy_kid_wrangler04 replied to treestarfae's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Abeka. I hated it. It did not teach a whole lot until 3-4th grade in science or history. The math is too slow for my kids. The reading seems to be pointless for the most part. (Sorry to those who love it--- it just didnt work for OUR family!!!!) -
I use apologia, and my kids LOVE it! They love science, they have NEVER loved science before. My 6th grade dd used to DREAD science until we started Apologia. It was like pulling teeth when she did it. She went through all the elementary science books this year because this is when we started. It was not at all overwhelming, and she just reads them on her own sometimes! She will be well on track to start general science in 7th grade. I have that book, I would recommend you doing the human anatomy book that is coming out this spring to get a beginning knowledge of the history of science. I have the General Science book and the 1st module is intense learning about the history of science btu the first chapter of Human anatomy also covers that so that will make it much easier. They get ALOT of info so take that first section slowly! I have a 2nd grader that is doing Astronomy, next year she will do Botany and Zoololgy 1. It is very possible to do 2 elementary books a year easy, possibly 3. I didnt know that at the beginning of the year. That is the only change Im making for next year, is when dd in 3rd she will be doing 2 books!

MOH vol 1 is not only bible history it also includes the information SOTW vol 1 contains (but at an older childs level) It is very age appropriate info, My 6th grader just LOVES it! That is her favorite subject! It is written in a conversational style that kids really get into and has quizzes, tests and activitys for the 3 age groups of kids (elementary, middle and high school)
