  1. I saw one in the teachers store. Has anybody used one? The box does a great job selling it, but ofcourse they are going to make it sound great. If you have used one would you recommend getting it? Its $55 and I dont really want to spend that much on a flop! Thanks
  2. I also have a son who went into a really bad siezure. He was sick, and we didnt give him anything so his body could fight off whatever it was causing it. Well, his eyes rolled back into his head, he was completely non responsive, and I think for a time he even stopped breathing until I started shaking him as I attempted to speak to the 911 operator. He was just 22 months old. We let fevers do their job, to a point. After that we really learned our lesson. My son went from feverish (100.7 to 105.3 literally within 10 minutes. We were told by the paramedics that had he been given tylenol we never would have had to go through that. I will tell you from a mother, that is NO WAY you EVER want to see your baby. I thought he was dying in my arms. My kids are rarely sick, we dont go straight to meds for comfort, they do not get ear infections, they do not have asthma. They are very healthy kids. We do use meds when needed. My son has walking pneumonia we found out today. Maybe had I given him cold meds sooner this wouldnt have happened. I dont know.
  3. We havent written up questions but we have indepth family discussions about both that series and the blue planet
  4. I havent heard of that I will look into it! Thanks!
  5. I have been giving her tricks to do, such as for 100-48, I as her what48 rounds to, she says 50, I say what is 100-50, she says 50, then I say how far away is 48 from 50, she says 2, I say what is 100-48 then she gets it. But she can not get it without that everytime. That being said I am going to use the HIG for that section, I have been reading through it to familiarize myself with it.
  6. We have been doing wordly wise but I have also been looking at either classical roots or vocabulary vine. Any recommendations between those two? (or another that you recommend?)
  7. Do you just do classical home education, or do you combine that with other methods? We do a mix of classical and Charlotte Mason. We are HUGE on living books~!
  8. For reading/phonics we will be doing: itchys alphabet www.starfall.com bob books for math we will be doing: CLP & horizons math counting mats science we will be doing CLP k-1 we are going to use a reason for handwriting k History I just plan to read library books to him about american history and historical people
  9. How do you post so you can type the name and make it clickable to a link? Example if I wanted a link to spelling power how can I make it so they see the words spelling power but not the web address?
  10. She can do any multiplication problem given to her mentally. (some take her a minute to think about, but the addition and subtraction is just not clicking. I though it would be the other way around.
  11. I just borrowed a friends, but have not used it yet. I bought them for 3rd. All mental math with the exception of 100-5. She is struggling with 100-21, 100-48. She keeps doing answers such as 100-48=68 I try to explain why that is wrong but she keeps going back to doing it. everytime
  12. My 2nd grader is doing singapore, and she is in 2b but she is just not getting the mental math. Any suggestions? We go round and round and its just not sinking in with her :banghead:. I was thinking to move on (the rest of the chapters are money, fractions, measuring stuff like that) and try mental math again this summer. What do you think? Any suggestions on how to help her learn mental math? I have tried every trick I know.
  13. This year I am just doing my own geography units. We have covered with my 2nd grader the US. She can label the location of 47 of the states, she gets a little confused with tiny new england states. And with my 6th grader I have done continental studies where she learns about that continents, the countries on them, landforms, bodies of water and the culture. I have spent no money this year, we do alot online and at the library. Its worked out great for us! Next year we are going to start doing trail guides. I think we are going to do US geography next year and world the year after.
  14. Don't we all get that way! I was the worst homeschool mom a few weeks ago. Seriously, it was a horrible week. Ok question #1) Is it Saxon that is making the both of you dread it? I know, we arent math people either. I tried Saxon and ended up switching. #2) there are TONS of fun online games that are free for review and to supplement. Fun is good, kids need fun. They also need the curriculum. Mix it up a little. Maybe that will help get her a little more excited about math. One of my favorites is www.coolmath.com #3) Take a deep breath, hug your daughter and relax. She is what 2nd grade? Take it slow, you homeschool. She WILL get it, and she WILL be better than any public schooler out there. One thing we do is we do math all year round. We do lessons during the summer and over breaks through out the year. (shorter than the normal lessons, about half a lesson a day on those days) but that way they dont have to play catch up! Good luck and you are NOT the worst homeschooler ever, I feel as if I fail in so many ways, and yet my kids are doing great!
  15. We are doing SOTW1, BJU heritage studies, apologia exploring creation with astronomy, BJU english, singapore & abeka math, a reason for handwriting, spelling power, wordly wise, mom made US geography, health & reading units. Of that I will be changing english to R&S next year & abeka math will be dropped and replaced with horizons
  16. I also got my first HIG for next year (we will be doing 3A & 3B) although I did borrow a friends 2B hig for extra mental math pactice.
  17. We really enjoy spelling power! Their 10 step works wonders for my kids! Multi sensory! Its done based on spelling rules, and they dont have a huge list to learn in the week. Check it out! http://www.castlemoyle.com/shopping/spellingpowermenu.htm You can find it used pretty cheap
  18. WOW! Our church has about 15 famlies and we are considered a large church for our area
  19. We live in a very small town (about 3000 people between our town and other surrounding areas) and our whole church are homeschoolers except for one family, but both parents are public high school teachers. We actually didnt know that before switching to that church (we had only lived in this state for 8 months at that time) But not all the homeschoolers do go to our church. But yes, all the families with children there is just 1 that does not homeschool! We have a huge population of homeschoolers for as small an area as we are in! Also our pastor homeschooled his children (they are all adults now with young children of their own)
  20. Ok, My 6th grader finished the spelling power book 2 months ago :hurray:. Now I am trying to decide what to do next year in 7th with her. I got a book called Spelling the Easy Way by (Mersman & Griffith) 2nd edition from a thrift store here in town and I like that and am really thinking about doing that along with Apples daily spelling drills. But I wanted to get advice from other people before I decide for sure! Thanks

  22. Has anybody actually read the bill? Because I have and frankly it scares me to death that how much health care you will actually get depends on how much you can contribute to society??? Are they kidding? And that it will be rationed?? So somebody who has a serious health issure will get so much health care a year and then they are done? This goes against EVERYTHING this country was founded on! I am scared to death. And it scares me how fast this is getting pushed through while they are keeping our focus on other petty issues. God save us all!
  23. Its a good program! I am switching my now 2nd grader to it for next year! I cant wait! It is presented in a way that really sinks grammer in, with both oral and written drills. My daugther will be switching from Bob Jones, and we are both excited! It is VERY thorough and comprehensive! I wouldnt say its advanced, but it is designed so the child will have an excellent understanding english! And the price is great!!!
