  1. Also click on this link and scroll down past the books. http://www.answersingenesis.org/PublicStore/catalog/Upper-Elementary,341.aspx These are also great. I love anything from answers in genesis and apologia. They all help kids to learn why Jesus is who he says he is and why the biblical accounts are true and how to defend the faith! Let me know if any of these are helpful!!!!
  2. These are set up so you can do as much or as little as you want. We dont do the whole lesson in a day, infact 1 lesson can take us 1-2 weeks. After we do a short reading we talk about what we learned and apply it to life (ex: the first chapter we talked about foundations being strong and actually did an activity with legos!) But this is something that I dont want them to rush through either, I want them to really grasp what they are learning, and make sure that it makes sense to them. Another idea is the answers acadamy, that is a dvd program. I have not personally tried this but I am going to after this series we are going through. I have had friends highly recommend this though! http://www.answersingenesis.org/PublicStore/product/Answers-Academy-Curriculum,4864,236.aspx It says for grades 7 and up but I have had 2 friends us it with their elementary aged kids with great results! They LOVED it!
  3. Im sorry here is the sample page. https://apologia.securesites.net/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=42&products_id=136 Basically its apologetics for kids. It teaches kids why the bible is try, how to know its true and how to defend the faith! Let me know what you think
  4. We use the bible curriculum from Apologia http://www.apologia.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=42 my kids have really liked it and really stay on task (and ask to do more) I use it with my 8 & 11 year old right now
  5. I didnt read all the replies so if this is already there sorry-- when I taught my dds I told them to put their hand on their chin, everytime it goes down its a new syllable :)
  6. I can not believe grandmothers of all people could do that to a grandchild. Do they not see what else is out there?? IMO I would keep the whole family away. I have not read the other responses so maybe people wont like my advice but that is utterly uncalled from. And from grandmothers. Please give your daughter a great big :grouphug:. Until the grandmothers "grow up" (sorry to be so blunt, but that is just childish) I would keep the family away. If they dont accept on member they dont accept any. Please be sure you talk with your daughter about this, often as she needs it (im sure you are, you sound to be doing a WONDERFUL job)
  7. What do you like best? Why? Im looking into pre-algebra (or algebra, I want to see our current prealgebra book first) on if that makes a difference Thanks for any and all advice!
  8. My 6th grader can be done in anywhere from 3-4 hours to 6-8 depending on her. There are days where she just drags it out :banghead: and then there are days when she just gets it done. I have found with her, which at first was my fault, that when it took her too long I wouldnt make her finish. Shame on me. That got her into a real bad habit of TRYING for that instead of just getting it done. That is why I have her finish (because I know she can, I have seen her many times) in a timely manner. We do everything in my sig daily. (It looks like alot, but WW can take 5-10 mins, MOH 15-20) so its not a rediculous amount. You may have been refering to my post im not sure, but that day was a week of the 8 hours :glare:... and I was frustrated. Since then she has been on a 3-4 hours kick... Why cant she just do it????? My 2nd grader is really good, I would say we do 3-4 hours. Again everything in my sig is our daily work (there are days when we just do half days, but the way I set my weeks up it hard to do it) This is our 2nd year of homeschooling. Last year it took longer, them getting used to it. So be prepared for that. This year has been better, Im hoping next year even better yet
  9. That is it in a nutshell. ANY homeschool education is soooo much better than any public school education.
  10. Oh If you do go with Itchys Alphabet its MUCH cheaper on www.rainbowresource.com
  11. My girls sit down and do their work, my boys :auto: :willy_nilly::willy_nilly: :boxing_smiley: well, lets just say not so much. I actually just posted a question similar with TONS of great advice http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=162797 From this, I have ditched OPGTTR, and am doing www.starfall.com , I am looking for the leap frog DVDs, and we are doing Itchys alphabet for reading http://www.itchysalphabet.com/ We are doing horizons math because it is VERY colorful (and trust me that keeps a boys interest better than black and white. Liberty math is fighting me for that reason) And make sure you give them breaks often. When doing letters help them act them out with thier body. Boys need movement!!!!! Short lessons often. Key to sanity! (atleast with my boys!)
  12. I have will have a K'er next year. I am going to teach him to read using Itchys Alphabet Phonics (that is not low teacher prep) and www.starfall.com tell her to check starfall out because that can do it with out another phonics program. My son LOVES that and we have started that already. Tell her to go to www.worldbook.com and look at the typical course of study for the k'er. She can do math with the K just going through the day (folding laundry to introduce fractions, putting groceries away addition and subtraction, stuff like that). The second grader can be taught when the new baby is sleeping. That will help her ease into it. (Good thing they do sleep alot in the beginning!) SOTW for history (a read aloud, can be done while feeding baby, or as a bedtime story) and that can be for both school aged kids. Science at that age is mainly discovery at that age. again go to www.worldbook.com to see what a 2nd grader has to know and she can do alot with the public library! Lots of read alouds, simple experiments. Rod and Staff has very good language arts that promotes independence and it is very affordable. Abeka math is semi self explanatory (atleast my daughter whizzed through it as if it were and got mostly correct answers) There are a lot of online math drill games. 2nd grade is alot of drilling facts, time (can be done easily anytime.) & measurment. Example. What time is it now? WHat time will it be in 30 minutes. What time would it be if the minute hand was on the 9 and the hour hand just before the 2? Tell her not to panic. Babies sleep alot at first, and slowly less and less and she will be able to slowly adapt. It wont be instant panic hard times. And the great thing about homeschooling is you do it on YOUR time. She doesnt have to school from 9am til 3pm. If its easier at night do it then! And it doenst take 6 hours at those grades either! Give her a big :grouphug: and tell her to relax!!!!
  13. All you have to do here is submit a scope and sequence informing them you will be homeschooling. (or if you use a boxed curriculum that info: example Abeka 6th grade) and thats it. No testing. Just a letter by the first day the public school starts.
  14. You have a homeschool consignment store? Im so jealous! I have to drive an hour and a half just to get to a walmart :glare:
  15. Are they strict? Easy? Have you lived in more than one state? What were the differences? Does your state (country) require testing?
  16. :iagree: :iagree: :iagree: :iagree: :iagree: exactly to a T! That way people dont have to say daycare, they can say daycare
  17. :iagree: :iagree: :iagree: That is what we use and it is amazing!!! My daughter who is in 6th grade finished the book though... any suggestions where to go from there??
  18. This would be a great time to begin the chronological then since 5th grade is the start of they cycle. If you are Christian I would recommend Mystery of History, if you want secular I would recommend something else that cycled through chronologically (Hakim's a story of US is a good secular program from what I hear!). Story of the world might be a little young for her though.
  19. :bigear: I want to know to for a 3rd grader next year (I will go 5-10) :bigear:
  20. I like those! Leanna, our DMV has the same sign I LOVE THAT ONE!!!!!
  21. Wow alot of sick people and right when it gets nice out :grouphug: sounds like lots of hugs are needed!!!!!!!!!!!!
