  1. Math - CLE speed drills. Instead of timing her to do the drills in 1 minute, I've added extra 30 seconds. She's also a bit slow when I drill her with flashcards. CC Latin memory work - "why do I have to study Latin?" always comes up!
  2. I do all that and give her the support she needs but sometimes I think my presence make her "act out" more because she has an audience. She's back doing her schoolwork now. I drew out a comparison of the time ps kids are in school and how long they are there. I told her that we could get school work done in 4 hours if we don't have tantrums about it.
  3. We were doing Level 1 and the first few weeks of lessons were boring my dd to tears. I gave her the placement test and she tested to start at lesson 81. So far it's going well because when we started at lesson 81, she was not getting perfect scores and need a few corrections. I am not sure about the accuracy of the placement test but it worked for us.
  4. You're right! I should not have let her looked at the Usborne-quicklinks site when we did the skeleton study. I should have waited. I am still learning how to instill "school hour" disciplines without killing her love for learning and thinking that school work is a drag.
  5. I told my dd9 to go to her room and sit on her bed until she is ready to come out and do her school work. She's not allowed to play, draw or read but just be on her bed. I am not fighting her or getting angry over it. We're not going out so she can still do school all day because she is obviously being defiant. This is not our norm as I usually prefer to be done by 2pm or earlier. This morning we started off doing some map tracing and reviewing some CC materials. She played some Science games on the computer and watch some short science videos (those are all fun for her). When it's time to do Math and other writing subjects, she started acting up, drawing instead of paying attention to the lesson and making faces. What do I do? I am trying NOT to let her behavior not affect me but I don't know if letting her go to her room is the right solution. Any advise? Thank you.
  6. Can you kindly give me the link to where I can sign up for this? I tried to goggle Discovery Streaming but cannot locate where I can sign up for Brain Pop. Thank you!
  7. Thank you for answering my questions. I will research about the word grouping. Sometimes I just guess....
  8. Glad to read this thread. I am still confused about SS. We started it this year and had to skip the early lessons bec. it was boring my dd9 to tears. I gave her the diagnostic test and jumped to lesson 81 (where she was tested to begin). She doesn't like me writing on the board, saying that it's too slow and she already knows the spelling of the word. She mostly gets it right with maybe 1 or 2 errors sometimes. How do I know which words to use a color on when I write on the board (I'm usually just guessing by looking at the word pattern). Is there a section there that tells the spelling rules? I think SS doesn't teach spelling rules, right? So if she mispelled a word, I am supposed to have her correct it right then and there, that's it, right? Then we do the next lesson the next day, right? Sorry for the questions, just want to know if I am doing it right...Thanks!
  9. Or it could be a project alongside what your child is learning. I bought some from In the Hands of A Child and we did the Human Anatomy lapbook. My daughter still looks at it now. She learned a lot more than what was in that lapbook because she added more things she could find online. If your child likes scrapbooking or doing crafts or hands-on projects, then I would say give it a try. HTH.
  10. We use the Usborne Internet-link Encyclopedia.
  11. I am starting RS4Kids biology with my 4th grader. We're also doing Chemistry next year. I bought the RS4Kids Lab materials from Home Science Tools. I like that the text is easy to understand and colorful for my dd, plus it's all there and if I need supplemental books I can always get from the library or research something online. I also like that it comes with a lab book for student. I think biology is a good starting point. I actually bought my sets from the For Sale board here and got it at a good price.
  12. I don't have "that" in me to homeschool. (that what?) My child needs to be around lots of kids. (???why?) My daughter is very social and she needs structure.
  13. How about these: http://ccbreview.blogspot.com/ http://www.focusonthefamily.com/parenting/protecting_your_family/book_reviews_for_parents.aspx http://planetesme.blogspot.com/
  14. I'm interested to know as well. I have a 3.5 year old too.
  15. Bumping it up. I'm interested to know what kind of lapbook to do aside from Science. Thanks!
  16. I am interested to know about this too. I just bought the Apologia Who is God book to use as a Bible Study with my 4th grader. I didn't order the journal.
  17. We're doing: Classical Conversations Cycle 3 Math: CLE 4 History: follow CC Cycle 3, reading books along with it Composition: IEW U.S. History based Spelling: Sequential Spelling Handwriting: Reason for HW Grammar: Essentials (CC) Science: Human Anatomy study using Usborne Complete book of Human body, supplemented with library books and videos, possibly doing lapbooks; RS4Kids Chemistry (these topics coincide with CC Science for this year) Reading: books at home or library Art: Mark Kistler and various craft projects Music: Piano P.E.: swim conditioning and ballet
  18. I bought the Usborne Complete Book of the Human Body and would like to do a lapbook with my 4th grader. We use Hands of A Child lapbook last year but I think she's ready to do more. Any recommendations for lapbook site? I am not creative and would prefer to purchase a complete lapbook template instead of creating one on my own. We're also doing American History (starting with Columbus) and would like some lapbook ideas as well. Thank you very much!
  19. I think my daughter will be more open when I am not inside but I would like to know what they are discussing. Do you have any advice on how to approach this with the psychologist?
  20. My daughter has been diagnosed with having Tourette syndrome and OCD. The 2nd meeting will involve just the psychologist and her. I would like to listen in on their conversation (without interrupting), and just being in the same room with them. Is that unreasonable to ask? For those who have kids in therapy, do you generally stay in the therapy room with them or leave your child with the psychologist alone and you wait in the waiting room? Thank you.
  21. I was at a friend's house today to check out her Abeka Math 3 and 4 books. My daughter commented that it looked harder than her CLE (3rd grade). I saw that they do division in thousands where in CLE they are just doing division in tens. Has anyone used CLE and did well in the standardized test? Thanks.
