  1. Does Rod and Staff Spelling teach the rules of spelling and has enough practice to help retention? I am going to start a spelling program for my soon to be 3rd grader. We are using R & S English 2 right now. Any suggestions for a phonics program or it's not needed in 3rd grade? Thank you.
  2. Thanks Sandy. How many mistakes are they allowed to make to determine their level. We are not done with Horizons 2 so there are still many concepts we haven't covered, such as measurement and division. I guess I should start with 2A if I want to do it side by side with Horizons and when we're done with 2B, let her take placement test and determine if she is ready to go to 3A, right?
  3. We're using Horizons 2 for my 2nd grader. I want to use Singapore Math next year (with Horizons) for 3rd grade. However, when I looked at the placement test 2A and 2B, I realized that there will be many things my daughter doesn't know (how the questions are presented, division, measurement - which we haven't covered). Is it ok to use 2A NOW together with Horizons and then move on to 2B so we'll be able to do 3A next year? Thank you!
  4. We are using Horizons 2 Math. I like the colorful pictures for my dd7 but I don't like their teacher's manual. I am not a Math person and the TM doesn't SHOW me how to teach. Someone gave me Saxon 3 and I like the scripted TM but the worksheet look so plain. I would like to get advice on what to use for 3rd grade. If I need to use 2 math programs, please advise what would be a good pair to compliment each other. Thank you!
  5. I love this website. We were studying Ancient Rome and we got a lot of craft ideas and interesting information. It's free and worth it!
  6. Did anybody ever use A Child's History of the World? Did you like it? Did anyone use SOTW and preferred that to CHOW? Why? Thank you again.
  7. Oh, thank you very very much for your suggestions and advice. I have the SOTW book and also the CHOW and can't decide which one to use. But looks like the SOTW seemed easier to read and understand :)
  8. How do you teach history to a 2nd grader? Do you pick a timeline and expand on the topic until you cover from past to present? Example: Egypt - do you start with ancient Egypt, do bunch of crafty things (my child likes to do crafts), read or look at books about Egypt and learn up to the life at present Egypt? OR - do you just skim on the ancient civilization and keep going? Is retention at this grade level important or it's just an intro and it doesn't matter if they remember most of the facts? Thank you.
  9. Thank you all for your big help!!! I so appreciate it.
  10. I am planning to use R & S English for 3rd grade and SL language arts; and possibly a spelling program alternately. Is it too much to add WWE? We've never done WWE and was wondering what level we should start with? (2 or 3?) Thank you.
  11. Love it! Just started using it. It's very thorough!
  12. Heard that R & S English is very thorough. What is the difference of it with FLL? Thank you very much.
  13. Do you like Rod and Staff Phonics, Spelling, English and their reading program? I want to plan Language Arts for my 3rd grader but don't know if I should get the whole package for LA or just pick what is their best. Is it compatible to use with FLL and WWE. Thank you.
  14. I need help. We've been using SL but we think we need a change just because we're not using their history/geography much. We're using their Science, some of their RAs and most of their LA with First Language Lessons (because I found that FLL is more organized and easier for my daughter to grasp). I don't know if we should still continue with SL or change. Please help me plan (it's just suggestions and I'll consider all advice gratefully.) For 3rd grade: LA: First Language Lessons and some of SL RAs. Do I need grammar, spelling and composition? Math: Abeka or Horizon plus one more (any suggestions what would be a compliment to the first 2 either/or) Science: History: I want to start SOTW Bible: Bible Study guide for all ages Anything else I need to add? Thank you very much.
  15. Wow, it's wonderful that your child is an avid reader. My dd7 likes to read but we're having a tough time transitioning to "quality" books. She is easily intimidated by certain chapter books such as Boxcar children (series) or even the Magic Tree House. I would like for her to start reading some classics but don't know which kind to get. Any recommendations? Has anyone heard or seen the Classic Starts series? I would appreciate your input.
