  1. Does Hake grammar have diagramming as well?
  2. DD9 is not enjoying R&S grammar book. Whenever we take it out, she would groan, "Rod and Staff' again? We only started it a few months ago because CC essentials was just moving too fast for her. Can anyone suggest a thorough grammar program that is not "dry" but complete other than Rod and Staff? We're going to do HOD CtC next year and they use the R&S grammar books as well. I would hold off on ordering them if anyone can suggest something better. Thank you.
  3. Can you kindly tell me which books to buy for a fourth grader ? Thank you.
  4. Has anyone use these as their stand-alone history for upper grammar? I couldn't decide between HOD CtC or MOH. I know there are threads out there and I probably have read most of them. Can someone chime in with some new insight? Thank you!
  5. Is it really too much Bible? Is your dd still liking it ?
  6. We are switching to Heart of Dakota this year. I like the notebooking and hand-on plus the 4year history cycle. Hopefully they will have last cycle when we reach 8th grade.
  7. Do I need the teachers book or the student workbook is sufficient. Thank you.
  8. If we only used WWE 2 at 3rd grade but didn't do WWE 3 and 4, will it be ok to move to WWS in fifth grade? We use IEW through CC Essentials program in 4th grade. Do we need to build on skills by using WWE 4 first? Thank you.
  9. I am planning to use it with my upcoming 5th grader. She likes notebooking and hands-on activities. Her grammar exposure is mostly things she learned at Classical Conversations and some IEW writing. Did you find the LA easy to follow with answer keys especially for the writing portion? Is CtC right for a 5th grader? We are loosely using SL Core D history right now but I need more structure that's why HOD looks really good and might just fit our needs. Does your son enjoy it?
  10. For those of you using HOD CtC, did you use ALL including their LA, writing and Science suggestions? If not, what did you use for those subjects? I need a lot of handholding when it comes to teaching grammar and composition. If I don't use their LA program (R&S english and Writing with the Best for writing, will I miss out on what's in their LA guide?) How do you like HOD CtC? Thank you!
  11. How about First Language Lesson, Writing with Ease, for grammar and composition? I used Rod and Staff for spelling when my dd was in 3rd grade.
  12. The Sword and the Arrow The Door in the Wall Saint George and the Dragon I'm sure there are more out there but these are what I can think of right now :) You might want to check out the Sonlight readers and RA's too.
  13. Essentials in Writing Want to hear feedback from others who are using it.
  14. Is this more of a grammar program or a writing program? Can it be used with IEW SWI B or it will be overkill? Merry, did you get my pm several days ago? Thanks!
  15. I am interested to know bec. I need a grammar program for my 5th grader. I was going to use IEW SWI B so I want to know if it will be the same or overkill.
  16. We've been doing CC for the past 3 years and have used that as our spine along with SL books and other science sources. I don't know what to use for my upcoming 5th grader and would like some suggestions: History: DD9 likes hands-on activities. We are using SL Core D RA's and readers along with Abeka history book because we do not care for the SL Landmark history book. I am not sure if I should continue with Core E (Intro to American History part 2 because it's the same history spine) next year or start from Ancients again (to start a 4 year chronological history). If I choose the latter, what would you suggest that covers history in an engaging way with activies to do and not busywork? (I have SOTW which we've listened to and did some activities before. We didn't do SOTW 3 & 4 activities bec. CC kept us very busy.) How is MOH? Any recommendations? I also like to have good literature or history fictions to go along with our lessons. Grammar: DD did her first year with Essentials. While it is ok, I need something that goes slower than Essential pace which will help with retention. How is Essentials in Writing? Is that just writing or is it a complete grammar program? Any suggestions? Composition/Writing: IEW SWI B? or Does Essentials in Writing cover both? Science: We're doing RS4Kids Chemistry Level 1 now. Don't know about next year. We've done RSO Life. I might use SL Science for 5th grade. Thank you for your suggestions.
  17. Can you easily supplement with Sonlight books? For a fifth grader, is it recommended to start with MOH 1? We are using SL core D loosely with Abeka history now. It is intro to American History. For the supplemental readers, are the recommended historical fictions as good as SL's? Thank you.
  18. I just recently heard about MOH. So far the reviews have been great. I was wondering if it's better than SOTW or do I need to supplement if I use MOH for upcoming 5th grader? My daughter likes to do activities. Thank you.
  19. Wow, I can't believe how much response I got from this thread. Thank you so much every one for your insight. I am so relieved to know that I am not the only one :)
  20. I hope this doesn't sound silly but I was wondering if there are people out there who just basically keep their kids at home at least 5 Days a week to do school work without joining "school-like" co-op? This excludes piano lessons or enrichment classes. Our homeschooling community seems to be big on having a day where kids get together for a day or about 5 hours a day and have some kind of planned instructions. I am not against that at all as I realized that it does work for many people but I am curious to know if there are people at the hive who have NOT done any co-op and felt that it doesn't affect the well-being of their homeschool? What about needing to be with others for "public speaking or oral presentation skills?" This is not meant as a debate. We have many invitations to join co-ops. While I know my child might enjoy the socialization and learning with friends, I am hesitant because I personally want to teach my child and spend time with her. I am also selective as to whom my child associate with. Thank you.
  21. My daughter doesn't hate math anymore when we switched to CLE. You can always buy one or two light units (workbooks) and try it. We like that there is a lot of white spaces and the page is not overwhelming to look. There are fun lessons that still teach math concepts. It is very independent and makes my child have a sense of accomplishment to do a new lesson on her own, though we still go over them if she doesn't understand. It is great for a non-mathy teacher like me.
  22. DD9 is doing 407 and it takes her about 40 - 45 mins. Speed drills and flash cards not included yet. Sometimes we don't get around to do the f/c and drills so on days when its the Just for Fun lessons we just double up on the drills.
