A brief Miquon video on my blog of us working with Miquon
OleanderRain replied to Halcyon's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Nice video! We haven't started Miquon yet but will be in 2 days. I just let my daughter watch it with me and she is excited and wants to "play math" now. Too bad we are getting ready to leave, if we have time I think I'll pull out the cuisenaire rods tonight before bed. Thanks for sharing your video, I love seeing other kids do school. -
I preferred Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons over OPGTR. We also supplement with ETC workbooks and Bob Books. TYCTR is also scripted, which is nice for someone like me who was clueless. I started supplementing with ETC 2 when I was almost halfway through TYCTR and it is working perfectly for my daughter.

You could supplement with MEP http://www.cimt.plymouth.ac.uk/projects/mep/default.htm it's a great math curriculum and it's free (except for the cost of paper and ink). I think you can get the password from the MEP yahoo group.

Copyright question... sheet music; co-op
OleanderRain replied to JoyfulMama's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I just found this, HTH... http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-fairuse.html#howmuch How much of someone else's work can I use without getting permission? Under the fair use doctrine of the U.S. copyright statute, it is permissible to use limited portions of a work including quotes, for purposes such as commentary, criticism, news reporting, and scholarly reports. There are no legal rules permitting the use of a specific number of words, a certain number of musical notes, or percentage of a work. Whether a particular use qualifies as fair use depends on all the circumstances. See FL 102, Fair Use, and Circular 21, Reproductions of Copyrighted Works by Educators and Librarians. http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ21.pdf -
Copyright question... sheet music; co-op
OleanderRain replied to JoyfulMama's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I was just looking this information up the other day but I couldn't find much. Some said just copying one page is illegal no matter who is using it. A lot of people said that it is okay to copy as long as it is for your own use. Others have said that you may not be making any money of of the copies. I have copied pages from books from the library a lot, I wouldn't think the library would allow it if it were illegal, but who knows. -
Thanks for the suggestion, I didn't even know this existed!

We haven't done this yet, so I'm hoping to hear others suggestions. I was going to add: matchbox car (maybe another toy or two) dishes or eating utensils measuring cups/spoons tools (screw driver, hammer, etc.) coins

Trouble deciding on history curriculum.
OleanderRain replied to mystika1's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We just started SOTW1, this sounds like exactly what you're asking for. Read a short chapter, answer a couple of question, a narration, a few hands on activities/crafts to choose from, and a short list of books to read, if you're interested. You really can make it as light or heavy as you want. It's easily adaptable to 1 day a week to 3 days a week! -
Which Handwriting Program to begin with for Pre-K/K?

Wow! Thanks everyone for the quick responses! I'm glad that I won't need it to begin. If anyone else can think of anything that the IM tells you to do with Book A, that may be helpful to us, please let me know. :tongue_smilie:

Hey there, This is our first day of school and I just realized that there is an Instruction Manual for the Getty Dubay Handwriting series. I have Book A now (which appears to be JUST tracing the letters), do I NEED the Instruction Manual to start? I can't order it until next week (I won't actually receive it for 2 weeks) so I'm wondering if I should wait until I get it to begin. If it's just tracing the letters that they want us to do we'll be done with that by the time the Instruction Manual comes so I would be ordering Book B as well. IS there anything else they want us to do that is explained in the IM? If you have a second...if you go onto Amazon you can look inside the book. If I do need the IM could I get away with just reading what they show until I get it? http://www.amazon.com/Italic-Handwriting-Instruction-Barbara-Getty/dp/0876780990/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1281971892&sr=8-7 I guess I'm hoping I don't need it at all for Book A, lol. TIA! :D

Thanks for the replies! I thought that that some of the beginning stuff looked like review but the later stuff looked pretty difficult. So what do others think, is MEP Y1 K or 1st? -
What's the correct etiquette...
OleanderRain replied to justamouse's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Don't be furious that the parents think they are invited. It's a very common practice for parents to attend the parties with their children. I think many more people feel that it is bad etiquette to just drop their children off. However I don't think it's the norm to assume the whole family is invited. That's impolite. Growing up, around here, parents have generally stayed at the parties unless it's a sleep over or it was specified in advance. I've never been to a pool party where parents left their kids. I do agree, I would feel obligated to feed the parents as well, if it were me I would plan for it. (Although I wouldn't expect to eat at my kid's friend party unless it was obvious they had food for everyone.) Do you have a cheaper option for pizza in your area? Pizza here ranges from $5 to $13. Or have hot dogs, chips, and iced tea instead, that would surely cut the costs. Good luck with the party, it sounds like it will be a blast for your son. -
What grade level would you say these math curricula are? Miquon Orange, Singapore 1A, and MEP Math Y1. I'm not sure if they a Kindergarten or 1st grade level. Thanks!
