  1. Another vote for dry erase. We have both and I hate the chalk dust, especially with my almost 4 year old purposefully creating it. I don't notice the smell so maybe I have the low odor ones. One thing I hate is when my youngest finds a regular marker and writes on the dry erase. Grrr!
  2. Sorry...I googled Solar Tsunami and news...here's an article http://newsfeed.time.com/2010/08/03/solar-tsunami-celestrial-show-to-hit-earth-tonight/ there are many more. :D
  3. I agree, they're a little much for us. They don't look too comfy, but I've seen worse. If you want something modest they have board shorts for girls and rashgaurds. That's what I wore when I used to surf, they cover quite a bit and they are not uncomfortable at all. To each there own though.
  4. If so, what state are you in? What time were you able to see them? Take pictures if you can.
  5. I would like a book that shows alot of the works of art of many or all of the artist's studied in Artistic Pursuits, an Encyclopedia with many colorful pictures. Anyone know of such a book?
  6. Okay, I'm not going to be too much help but I would also like to know a little about this. I just received the Instructor's Text and the Workbook in the mail but I haven't gone through it yet. I don't think that you need an extra set of Student pages unless you have more than one child using the curriculum. The student pages are in the workbook. I have read that you can use just the workbook or just the Instructor's Text but how would they be used together if you got both? I'm going to read through it tonight and tomorrow but I saw your question and thought I'd ask. :D
  7. DD will be 7 this month and she has been struggling with sounding out words for a year now. She is improving, but at a very slow pace. Just this week she has been reading words while out and about and getting excited about reading and doing her lessons. Before this week it was a struggle, lots of moaning and groaning. I'm hoping that is all behind us now that it's clicking.
  8. Do you have a Unitarian Universalist "church" nearby? If he wants to go to church I'd try taking him there. I've never been but I've heard wonderful things about the one near me and I'm thinking about taking my family.
  9. I just picked one up at Target today. It was $16.99 and measures 22"x35" and it has a nice black frame. I wish I had somewhere to mount it on the wall but we use our dining room table for school. I think I'm going to keep it in the closet and pull it out and prop it up when it's time to use it.
  10. Maybe his mom made him go through his books and the topic will never come up. If it were me I wouldn't give them to my son. If the neighbor dwere to ask I'd just say. "Oh, he hasn't gotten around to them yet. We've been really busy lately." But, if my son was asking to read them, I'd let him....if there is nothing inappropriate of course.
  11. Thank you for sharing, this is exactly what I was looking for!
  12. I just saw this discussed the other day....here it is! HTH http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=197382&highlight=SOTW
  13. I'm so sorry your kids had to go through that. :grouphug: I sent my daughter to a 2 hr a day pre-k and she was also bullied. I do believe that has alot to do with her insecurities now. She is so shy it's painful.
  14. I've shipped items to people (about an hour away) who have bought from me off of CL and they payed using paypal. If you are shipping to semi-local people that's alot less of a risk right there. You're going to have their address and you're close enough to them that you could drive there so they are less likely to scam you, IMO. I wouldn't ship anything too valuable of course but you'll know if it's not worth the risk. In your ad just state that they can p/u or have the item shipped. I would never ship to someone more than 2 hours away.
  15. Thanks for the encouragement! She's using 100 EZ Lessons. :)
  16. This sounds just like my daughter! She gets the word if I sound it out, and she doesn't remember what she just sounded out. Say we break up the word "triangle", she'll sound out "tri-" and then "-angle" and when I tell her to put it together she has to sound out "tri-" again! She doesn't remember! Can you give me more info on visual processing skills? I've never heard of this before. :o
  17. We just bought Artistic Pursuits and it looks really nice, I can't wait to start it. You can view sample lessons online here: http://www.artisticpursuits.com/ak-3.htm#k-3%20a
  18. Thanks ladies, for all of the great advice! I'm very excited to buy this and start it ASAP. I started a new thread about her guessing while she's reading, I hope you guys have some tips for me there too. :D http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1907162#post1907162
  19. My daughter knows all of the letter sounds but not all the teams (i.e. iegh, ough, ing, dge, and others). She can sound out words and just not hear the word she is saying, it just doesn't click. That's when she'll just throw out a word that doesn't even sound close to what she's reading. Like earlier today, she was sounding out the word white and after 4 times of sounding it out slowly, and it not clicking, she blurted out SQUARE! Is there a reason she can sound out a word and not "get it"? It's been so frustrating. I keep calm and we just take a break when I feel that way but it make's me feel like I'm doing something wrong. Anyone have any helpful hints they could pass my way? TIA!
