  1. Weekly report just finished! I love reporting in. I just realized that we didn't complete any science this week. :glare: I knew I wasn't doing any with my daughters, but didn't realize that my son didn't do any either. Also, I realized that my son has only been getting through 3 math lessons each week. We need to step that up. I don't think I would have really thought about either of these issues without the update, so thanks! link in my sig line. Oh, and now that I've completed my update I can sit back and comfortably read all of yours!
  2. Yes, if it is an accredited school you do not need to file with the state. And I think that answers the ? as to if you are homeschooling or not. :)
  3. What's up with the diet Coke and ChexMix, I've been gone for a few years----does no one pass the bean dip anymore?
  4. Real Science seems to be very popular here!:001_smile: I am using history odyssey and like that program. I assume the science would be just as wonderful. It seems though that the program is more then I want--in scope and price. Wonderful endorsments. Next year when planning I will think about one of the real science programs.
  5. I am intrigued by Ring of Fire--am going to spend more time today looking at the website and investigating this. Thanks for the suggestion. Earth Logic looks interesting also. It seems like a fairly new company. Do you know of anyone who has had personal experience ordering from them? The price and timeline of this program is perfect for what I have in mind!
  6. smrtmama, I couldn't get your link to work. Could you repost it? Yes, I am looking for a secular program. I am Christian and can work with a Christian program, but do not really like to. I would love to look at what this link.
  7. I am right now trying to use ScienceWorks Planet Earth, and it is not working for us. It assumes that as the teacher I have a lot more background than I do. I have an awesome rock and mineral kit, but do not have any good instructions to use it. :001_huh: ScienceWorks tells us to observe the rocks and minerals and gives us charts to do so, but I don't know what we are suppose to be observing. How do I test for density, texture, orgin? This problem repeats itself throughout the book. So, you see, I need something that provides more help! My dds who would be using this are visual and hands-on learners. Their reading level is about 4th-grade. I am looking for something that we could spend about 8 to 12 weeks completing. We will be studying the solar system the last half of the year, and I have that covered. What have you used and enjoyed for earth science? Thanks for any suggestions!
  8. I had my dd do the work independently, but I made sure to do the daily oral review with her. It took just minutes, and then I knew if she understood and retained the info from prior lessons. Hope all goes well.
  9. Another good resource for teaching paragraph writing at that age is: Four Square--http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F8XA8Q/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=1573101885&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1D20J7A5EW15D43CF4BS I hope that links works for you, if not you can look up Four Square writing on Amazon. I also found this power point presentation that has all the info you would need without buying the book. Sorry, I can't get the link to work, but if you Google Four Square Writing it is the first and second link to pop-up. Four Square is one way to use graphic organizers like gingersmom mentioned. I had lots of success with four-square with all of my kids. HTH
  10. hsmom, Here is a link that might help you with picking out some fun projects to do with your son. http://www.homeschoolshare.com/
  11. Tara, Here is the link to the orginal post: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129443 It was more then skipping one class.
  12. I'm wondering if finding a few moms who homeschool to get together with would work for you. For me, I've wanted to belong to a group for me. My kids have friends without a homeschool group, but I want friends that homeschool. I want to be able to discuss curriculum, sucesses, disappointments, ect that only a homeschool mom would understand. So, I've found that it works to get together with moms minus the kids. Usually in the evening--when most moms with kids in public school don't want to go out because they haven't seen their kids all day. This way I don't have to worry about how our methods of homeschooling are so different or our kids goals don't mesh. Maybe you might want to look for a mom's group just for you or find a mom or two to have your own "group"?
  13. Is there another way you could be in her life even if she isn't teaching your children anymore? Moving on to a different teacher doesn't have to mean she can't be in our lives anymore. It won't be the same, but it needn't be all or nothing.
  14. Yah! for consequences that don't have to come from you! It's hard but also good to see growth come from mistakes made.
  15. At sixth grade--I set the timer for 1 hour. What gets done get done. If the child were to waste time on a regular basis, I would then assign homework.
  16. Rainbow girls? I haven't participated, but I have a friend that has done it with both her daughters.
  17. yes, glaucoma popped into my mind with those symptoms. Go to either. If you already have an optometrist, go to him and he will refer you elsewhere if necessary.
  18. Could you ask her if you could email her early in the week when her dd has the assignment? That would not take more than a minute or two, and she would have the information to give to her dd prior to Sunday.
  19. A friend is bringing over beef stew and cornbread muffins for us! Life is good--even though we're sick.
  20. At our house, school is a privilege. I have one child that has done exactly what you described your daughter doing. When she does this she is excused from school--she either sits on the stairs or has to go to her room depending on what kind of reaction she has. I try to calmly tell her that when she is ready to learn she may join us. I know trying to stay calm is hard, but I think its really the key to dealing with behavior of this kind. I'm sorry this is so frustrating for you.
