  1. I'd get the Seton cds. They are maybe $5 or so?? Also, they have a more complete answer key for $5. My mom says it's a nice change of pace to listen to some of the cd.... They are doing well with it. My mom expected to go faster, but they'll finish Unit 3 this year. Carrie:-)
  2. Barring my one daughter's allergic to peanut butter...I don't make special requests. She really wants to be able to eat as others do, and I think it's fair to let the people in charge know about her allergies...and that most of the meals won't have cross contamination so that she can't eat anything. For my picky son, I take toast (homemade whole wheat) and veggies or something so that he will eat something. I guess I usually do fix him his own food. I am still a parent and in charge; I'm ok with letting him choose what to eat, as long as I don't get into two seperate actual "meals". Carrie:-)
  3. I bought them right here....Lucky me, I suppose:-) And, don't let that turn you off to all of Jim Weiss' cds...The ones that are his own stories sound quite a bit different. I really like all of his, though....I just wanted this too....I'm a SOTW junkie....Is there a t-shirt for that?? Carrie:-)
  4. Just as a matter of note, most believe that flowers should not be given to the dancers, but rather to the teacher. IF you give flowers, protocol as I know it, is to give the flowers to your children off the stage. Our ballet teacher suggests charms for a bracelet/necklace. If you think of between 2-3 performances for say....14 years....that's 28 "somethings". Just a thought. Since we sell Klean Kanteens....we gave our teacher a Klean Kanteen this year...Pink, of course! Carrie:-)
  5. The distilled water makes them not get icky. I've heard of people using an old wipes container and putting the water and cloths in a wipes warmer... Carrie
  6. So, what's "revised" mean on the book...just the maps?? Carrie:-)
  7. Oh WOw, be kind to the rest of us and keep a bit of a record of how it's going....and what things we should do and not do:-) Wish you were here! I have a 6th grader and a 1st grader... Oh Well... Carrie:-)
  8. Hi There, So, I just purchased the SOTW cds done by Barbara....?? I'm wondering what differences I need to note between the older SOTW and the newer ones. I purchased the SOTW I and II. I'm excited, as I've heard that some really prefer listening to her. I'm going to make them available to my homeschool group, so I wanted to see if I can find out where the list is of the "updates" to the book. Thanks! Carrie
  9. So, did you find it to be pretty easy to use?? The math unit?? Also, I have to tell you that I met a Leila when I was about 11. I loved that name.... (I was in TX...) Carrie:-)
  10. Leila, Have you actually used the Living Math lessons? I'm looking at Julie's SOTW unit 1 to start with. I'd love to hear real experiences with it. Cadam hasn't started a coop as far as I know. Even though I'd love to do a LCC coop...I'm thinking it might be easier to find families to participate in a Living Math coop class. I'm a bit apprehensive to do a Math class myself. I loved basic math, but get me into Algebra...and it's like asking me to teach Russian.... Carrie:-)
  11. Thanks! Yes, I'm sure. She's allergic to peanuts and shellfish....I'm having her tested before she goes, in a controlled atmosphere (at an allergists office) because that will be a pain! She's been doing Latin pretty seriously for 3 years, and it looks like there are some words that are mighty close. My mom was looking this morning. Plus, it seems that it would be a great place to attend Mass....maybe even in Latin?? Carrie:-)
  12. Thanks Pam! She'll be missing the first week or two of CC. She's VERY excited to get to go... tix are purchased and everything. Wow, what a g-pa!!!! Carrie:-)
  13. I know that Florence is on the list. I'll ask my dad for specifics. Thanks! Carrie:-)
  14. I haven't done anything with it, yet. It doesn't mean I won't :-) I'm thinking that I could do this on a different day than the day I do Classical Conversations. I'm also very interested in doing a Living Math unit that I found over on the Living Math site...that corresponds to SOTW I. I think it'd be a great year of 6th grade math. If anyone reading this has done it...I'd love to know:-) Carrie
  15. I've already thought of all the things she should try while there, she's allergic to peanuts and shellfish, so that may be a problem. I want her to be tested for real, which is when they have you consume the products that you are supposedly allergic to in a controlled environment. It would be SO much easier if she isn't really allergic! Carrie:-)
  16. It's the blossom, I believe, that's left on the eggs. I know when my parents were in France...all the eggs were on a regular shelf. My friends with farm fresh eggs, leave them in the pantry for more than a week. Once they are really washed, or refrigerated, is when you're suppose to keep them cold.... And, yes...farm fresh are best. When we first started getting them....my girls were saying, "Why are these so orange?" and then after a while...they forgot...because over at my mom's, my daughter asked, "Why are yours so pale?" Carrie:-)
  17. I like Writing Road To Reading. I might be more partial to it, because it's been around our house since my mom took WRTR classes....about 27 years ago. The new ones have some "improvements" which make it very close to the other book you'll hear about on here.... Wanda Sanseri's - Spell to Write and Readwww.exodusbooks.com/category.aspx?id=5332 I like the cursive writing from Cursive First An Introduction to Cursive Penmanship by Elizabeth FitzGerald 2nd edition from LITHBTH Educational Services for Kindergarten-4th grade $15.00 There's a great "why" of teaching cursive first, from dexterity to the fact that it's more "classical" because that's how children were taught until the last few decades...in most of the world. (That uses our alphabet) Also, it makes a mention of the fact that you revert to the first way you learn, which may be one of the reasons that teens/adults have such horrible handwriting. When you look at someone who's really old, you see this nice handwriting that was obviously drilled. I believe that what they use to teach was either Spencerian or close to it.... They learned to print when they needed to do map work in older grades. Carrie:-)
  18. If it's just a space issue, I'd put some of your kids together...and give them a room. (All of them in one room). Of course, that's because when I was growing up...company just came and stayed with you.... That was the fun of it! On the other hand, do you have anyone you could borrow and RV from and park it on your property? My son would think it was great...a whole week that he could probably get away with p **ing outside.....(He's little) Carrie:-)
  19. Feed them to my dog:-) He LOVES eggs.... you can boil them... cool and give.... That's just me, though. Carrie:-)
  20. SO, my 11 year old will be going to Italy for 17 days. I want her to do a crash course in the study of Italy. She's not leaving until the end of August. SO, what books would you read? What sites would you just have to see? If you've been there, what's to die for? She's going with her G-pa (my dad) so he's use to traveling, and has a list of where he wants to go....I'm just curious about what she might want to see. And yes, I'm a bit jealous! BUT, very happy for her. And, we're studying Ancient History...next year! Carrie:-)
  21. I'm having a Classical Conversations Info Meeting in Salem. If anyone's interested, pm or email me:-) (It's a Christian Homeschool Group that meets weekly) Carrie:-)
  22. You know, when I gave birth...about 2 months later...I was in such pain I had to roll out of bed. I had x-rays done when my daughter was 2, and had "early arthritis". I've been to a great chiro...at first I went a few times in a row. Sometimes I have to go 3 or 4 times in a row...but usually just maybe 5 or 6 times a year. I feel...NO PAIN now! I would suggest looking into Chiro visits. You need to look at the various kinds of Chiro. I get maybe one serious massage a year...and a few Chiro visits. Of course..the massages are wonderful. She's great! I tried going to Physical Therapy...but that didn't help me... Good Luck! :-)
  23. Gamom3 :-) If they have a website, I'd love to take a look at it. Carrie:-)
  24. I'm not necessarily bored, just friendless. It's not that I don't have people to talk with, it's just that I don't have a "real" friend. You know, someone who would still check in with you if you weren't in activities together. I was talking to my one real friend, my mom, and I told her ....it's something you imagine being a normal part of your life...that best friend who might actually go to lunch or the movies every once in a while.... without kids... Oh Well, at some season of my life...I'd like a true friend again... :-)
  25. So, I see that you roll a dice, but...how do you play? I noticed the templates for other cards that you can make.... Thanks! Carrie
