  1. My husband works in telecommunication in cellular and landline and he says that this is possible. Cellular is not secure. It is over open air. It can be picked up by some scanners. He says that landline is the only secure communication. Hope that helps! homemama ds 10, MFW next year, can't wait!:001_smile: P.S. O.k., now I just read back through your posts and I see you've got this figured out! Great! :) My info is late, but at least you know! ha!
  2. So, so sorry to hear this! I will be praying for all involved. Blessings, homemama
  3. I'm going to use MFW-ECC for my only ds next year. I just decided to choose something that fit us and not worry. I like things planned out and guided, so that will be good for me. I would choose this if I had one or many! I will just adapt anything that's to be done in a group situation to us doing it together as a family, like the geography game. Wishing you the best in choosing!:001_smile: homemama
  4. We have enjoyed Scholastic News from Scholastic. It is very reasonable, and is very much like Weekly Reader. It also has skill pages with internet links, but will not let you use them unless you have at least 10 subscriptions. They do cater to the public schools in that sense, but it is a really good little leaflet and it comes in the mail weekly or bi-weekly, can't remember. homemama
  5. I can't search either, very frustrated....:tongue_smilie: homemama
  6. Not using textbooks, worksheets for all subjects, letting the child do some "interest led studies" sometimes. Also, taking "school" outside, weather permitting. I also agree with nature walks. Using hands on materials can also add joy to homeschooling. Hope that helps! :001_smile: homemama ds 9- MUS, SL 1&2 and lots of books
  7. Wow, I may just check out those Serl books;). I sooo need that kind of reaction from ds! homemama ds 9- SL 1&2, MUS, Abeka lang., lots of books
  8. Just wanted to throw in lessonpathways.com If you have internet or can use the library internet, this is an awesome free site with all subjects including educational videos and etc. I would probably use that site plus maybe some of those "The Complete Book of...." that you can usually get at Sam's or bookstores. Those books usually have lots of subjects included in one book. Plus, like others have said, I would also add the library in as well. HTH! :001_smile: homemama ds 9, Sonlight core 1&2, MUS, AAS
  9. :grouphug::grouphug: I feel your pain, Tammi! My ds can be like that. However, he did go to school for 1 semester in kindergarten and it was waaay much worse. So, I'd rather deal with it on this level than with the PS problems! For me, with ds being argumentative at times, I just pick what interests "me" and go on. Cause I know that no matter what he is given, there will be some problems no matter what. I second previous posters idea of listing everything that is to be done on a given day. This lets ds see what has to be accomplished. Sort of like a "light at the end of a tunnel". FWIW, we have switched to Sonlight for most subjects. However, math is still an issue we're trying to work through. We always have trouble with math!:tongue_smilie: So far, the Sonlight has brought the least amt. of tears than anything else we've tried, so we'll stick with that. Also, frequent short breaks break up the monotony. Hope things go better for you soon! I'll be praying for ya! homemama ds 9, mostly Sonlight, with MUS
  10. I haven't tried SOTW, but my son really likes Sonlight. If you're kids are very visual, they might like it. My son really likes the color plus the books. Just wanted to throw a different option out there for ya!:001_smile: And "no" I'm not a rep or anything. homemama ds 9, mostly Sonlight
  11. Agreeing with Beach Mom, our allergist told us that the reactions may or may not be alike. Also, that his next reaction could be his last. We carry epi/benadryl, Claritin everywhere, just in case. Chinese Restaurants are not on my safe list for ds. Too much cross contamination, plus nuts in some dishes anyway. homemama
  12. Regentrude, Labels are full of "may contains". That simply means (usually) that the food is manufactured on the same equipment with other things containing nuts. It's usually something to just cover the companies. We do not eat "may contains" however we're able to be around others that have may contains or eat may contains. To not do this, would be to "truly" not leave your home. I say this with all caring and sweetness. I don't want to come across mean or anything, just informative.:001_smile: For people with food allergies, you have to find your "comfort level" and what one's comfort level might be for some might not be for others. For instance, some people with food allergies even let their children eat "may contain" food items, I do not. This is why I posted that the food allergic family must make their decisions (based on doctor recommendations) what they can participate in and what they can't participate in. Our doctor specifically said to not isolate my son for any reason. Otherwise, we might end up with him in psychiatry! As far as legal concerns, when a parent is present with their own child, I think the responsiblity lies with the mom in a group play situation. That's why you don't "drop" your child off at locations where people are not willing to take responsibility. It does make for moms of food allergic having to be present more. Also, medic alert bracelets are very helpful for children to wear. Plus, as children grow older, they take some of the responsibility for the unfortunate reaction if it occurs. There is LOADS of helpful info on the web about managing social situations with food allergies foodallergy.org is a great resource for everyone dealing with these situations. Education is one of the best tools and finding friends supportive and willing to learn makes things less scary for everyone. Sorry, this is so long, just that I've been through this for the long haul and it really hits hard. Also, wanted to add--- In a school situation, if a child is turned down because of the allergy, the institution can be charged with segregation with the office of civil rights. Food allergy is considered a disability (a hidden disability.) Public schools have to make accomodations for these kids, just like any other child with handicaps. homemama
  13. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: BTDT! and still doing that! We have been dealing with peanut allergy (touch and ingestion) since ds was 2. One of the reasons we homeschool! All I can say is, IF YOU'RE NOT DEALING WITH FOOD ALLERGIES, YOU DON'T FULLY UNDERSTAND. I have had my feelings hurt many, many times. I could write a book! Food allergies is truly a disability. It not only affects a person's body, but it affects the SOCIAL LIFE as well. I'm putting this in caps, not shouting at you, but so others who read this thread will truly pay attention. My son was not even accepted at a church mother's day out program because the teacher freaked out about the allergy. This was even after we had it all worked out. I mean is it too much to ask of others not to bring nut products when it could kill a child, physically and socially??? Come on, what's more important, a child's life (meaning social also) or a p.b. sandwich?? LOL! Not trying to step on toes, but people being afraid can keep a child in a bubble literally! I understand that it's hard to know that without dealing with this on an everyday basis. I'll try not to be so negative in my next response. Others are afraid of what they do not understand! Education to others about the allergies is one of the best things you can do. Please try to find other friends at the moment (you need someone to lean on) and keep moving on. There is life after a food allergy dianosis, but life is different and has to be treated that way. I would love to befriend you! Send me a PM!:001_smile: homemama trying to educate my silly 9 year old, without nuts! They aren't a staple to live!
  14. Loving AAS, we bought it "again". This is the 100th time that I've bought this, now it's here to stay! SL science- Picked this back up again and love it!:001_smile: SL Readers- Love the living books and ds enjoys "most" of them.;) Flashkids Reading workbook- A surprise like! This has lots of concepts covered that can be done with a short story excerpt. Great way to check skills before any testing and etc. OOOPS! That's more than 3, I'll stop for now. Great thread! homemama
  15. I think it depends on where your children are. I think my 10 year old would be perfect for the combined core since we haven't studied world history yet. However, coming from a different background, it may be too redundant. FWIW, I think it would be a lot easier to beef up a core than to reduce one or chance it being to difficult. homemama
  16. My son is 9 and he sounds alot like your son when it comes to subtraction. It has really helped for me to constantly remind him of Mr. Demme's way of doing those. I always ask him "how far from 10?". Like 15 is 5 away and 9 is 1 away. So, the answer is 6. Or, I have him to add up. He's still not super fast with answering, but at least he can get the answer this way. I have even had him write out the "how far from 10" number beside the problems and that helped as well. Just thought I'd share what we have been doing.:) Hang in there!! homemama
  17. Just wanted to bump, cause I'm interested in knowing also.:bigear: homemama (gotta create a siggy!)
  18. :grouphug: Praying for you and your family. I'm sure he'll be on the road to recovery soon, I'm sure. homemama
  19. Sorry, Donna A. that I'm just now getting back to this thread. We are starting ECC this week (If I can get my ducks in a row,). I have been looking more at MFW's suggestions for language and I'm still pondering the choices. Still looking over everything and still checking out CM type curriculum. homemama
  20. Well, I just typed a post and lost it.:tongue_smilie: TT4 did not appeal to him, even though he could manage the material pretty well. Might be worth another shot! As far as math fact practice, this kid CAN NOT be timed! :tongue_smilie: He will cry and freeze up. Can't handle the stress, even if he can answer the problems. All is fine, if you don't time him. We usually use MUS drill practice for this and it works pretty well. Still thinking and pondering... Thanks for the ideas! homemama
  21. O.K., I'm computer literate, I've checked my security settings and I have SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 checked, I've checked my connection and my computer gives me the message "Internet Explorer can not display this webpage". I can go to all the other sites that I frequently visit! What's wrong??? Help please!!:tongue_smilie: Thanks in advance. homemama fun@home on the reviews page
  22. I just tried again and I still can't access it??? I can go to other websites, but I can't go there. This is driving me crazy! I know I'm not blocked or anything. I haven't done anything wrong on there,. I'm clueless, I keep typing the address and I've also tried it from a link, but it still won't pull up? Any ideas??? homemama
  23. This story has really spoke to my heart today. Can I hug everyone?:grouphug: I'm dealing with my undiagnosed ADHD who seems to have gaps here and there and can has very low frustration levels at times. No tantrums, but he cries easily and can't be still for long. To the OP, I understand!! I feel like crying an ocean today! It does help to share, but we must press on for their sake. Praying that all will be better soon and we will be lead to know what to do. homemama
  24. Sue, I don't have a lot of info, but just wanted to say that I'm in the very same boat with my 9 year old ds!:tongue_smilie: Math is an issue, lang. is better, but could be a problem if not handled with gloves . Trying to find out the same answers! So, I'm interested in your responses as well and hope to keep this thread at the top. :lurk5: homemama ds 9, can't list curriculum at the moment, since it's all up in the air!
