  1. I've had migraines for 50 years. They were so severe and so constant that in my late teens I was part of a documentary on people with chronic migraines. I think I've only had one MRI. Although there were triggers like weather, hormones, lack of sleep, they've almost completely disappeared since I removed a ton of foods because my girls were reacting to them when I was nursing. Our diets are super clean and I almost never have a migraine even with all those old triggers. I'd tried eliminating foods when I was younger, but I never eliminated ALL the top allergens at the same time. It never occurred to me that I could be reacting to all of it. I spent time as an inpatient, in ERs, missed lots of work, took super heavy meds. All of that and it turned out to be food that was the underlying problem. No one ever suggested eliminating dairy, corn, soy, gluten, etc. at the same time.
  2. My daughter took the AP Art History through PAH, and we wouldn't recommend it if you're considering taking the exam. We also recommend PAH AP Chem. We've never heard anything negative about that class!
  3. Maya Inspector for AP Lang and Lit through PAH.
  4. Yes, yiu can search the archives directly. I used the map on Ancestry to get the district and then was able to look up the last known address to find several relatives. Once on the page you can help by transcribing and submitting what’s there. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait awhile to find those who have moved. I also noticed that there were a lot of times that the record was noted that the occupants weren’t home so no census was done. I’ve never seen that in an earlier census.
  5. Yes, I have lots of holes in my family tree, so I really look forward to working some of that out. I also love history and data. Reading the census is like reading a book to me in that I love seeing how people’s lives changed. I get to read the sped up version as I move through the years and discover what happened to all these people. They’re born, you see them marry, there’s death and wills and who moves out and then moves back with a spouse….all just fun to me 😊
  6. After being super patient for months, now that we’re only hours from the release, I’m super excited for the 1950 census release. Anyone else looking forward to spending some time reading what’s immediately available?
  7. You know this woman personally, so you likely have a more accurate interpretation of where she was coming from. Just on first interpretation from what I’ve seen in my life experiences, I’d agree with the poster who said the mom might be trying to remind others to be supportive of her child and remember that she was ill. I’ve seen a lot of questionable parent behaviors stem from concern/fear of the perspective of the adults in charge (teachers, coaches). It usually stinks from the top, and the parents react to the less than child friendly judgements being made at the top. Those parents may also just want their child to love the activity, but the adult in charge doesn’t have that perspective. That Facebook message was likely an inelegant way to ask that her child not be judged and wasn’t meant to be a judgement on anyone else.
  8. We know several people who have chosen to brace and use Schroth instead of surgery. Not sure if you’ve already decided you’d prefer to go with surgery or didn’t know it was an option even with advanced curves. Dm me if you’re interested.
  9. Congratulations!! You should be so proud of yourself! And, how lucky are we to have someone so skilled and smart available to us if we should need it! And, there’s a chance your mom is so disappointed in herself for not being able to just celebrate with you. Above all, congratulations!!
  10. I’ve had 2 take bio with PAH with Terri Kanner. The first had nothing live. The second had a 1 hour live. We’ve had no experience with Blue Tent. I don’t recall any required videos for either version of the class. You didn’t ask this but I will say that Connie Schwartz is one of the best outsourced teachers we had. She teaches Chem, not bio, but I really wish my oldest had a chance to have her. At the time we were only looking for AP classes. There are only a few teachers that we felt were amazing, and she’s a definite on our Must Take Teacher list.
  11. We were in NYC this weekend, and I was super surprised to see many people, maybe 60 percent wearing masks outside. We live in a blue state and no one masks outside. Locally the mask mandates are being lifted for inside spaces.
  12. I strongly echo the need to check in with every student in depth at least weekly. My oldest was super independent and was taking an average of 4 AP classes that were outsourced each year independently. We had a terrible teacher one year and she told me she'd be better off on her own and I think it was in February that she outlined her own course, AP review and got a 5 in the class. She's about to graduate college now and the stress of being so independent all these years is showing up a bit. I think that even if the check in was just a formal chance for us to go through subject by subject and have her hear words of encouragement or confess some stress it would have been helpful. We talked ALL the time, but not a formal weekly check in subject by subject. She's way better at time management and organizational skills than I am, and I felt she didn't need my help with that, but I've found through our conversations through the college years that there are some things I've learned that are helpful to her that she didn't instinctively know and I wish I'd shared them with her earlier. I'm much more involved with my younger because she isn't instinctively as strong with her executive function/organizational skills. Many of her classes are outsourced, but I'm involved on a daily basis to scaffold how she estimates time necessary to complete work and how that's scheduled throughout the day. I agree with what everyone else has said about the need to check in frequently to help avoid stressful situations. We use white boards for each day to break down the day by subject by time. Several of her classes have the work broken down by section. She marks what needs to be accomplished each day so we know if she's falling behind. She spends every afternoon and evening out of the house, so we have to be diligent in reworking the schedule if she needs more time for a subject or if something came up that requires her to miss some of the time we usually set aside for schoolwork. Having the sections labeled by day ahead of time allows me to quickly see where she is.
  13. I have a friend who has taught German to homeschoolers through the AP level. PM me if you are looking for an instructor.
  14. I agree that Connie is one of the best teachers my girls have had. I wish my older had taken class with her. She’s the complete package. Wish I could clone her for other subjects!
  15. I had one daughter take Lang and Lit with Inspektor at PAH and another take Lang with Serbicki and then, Lit with Inspektor. I was a bit disappointed with Serbicki's Lang class. Dd scored a 4 on the exam, but honestly, we were shocked that she was successful. We did quite a bit of cramming before the exam because we didn't feel she was at all prepared. I didn't dislike Serbicki, but I felt that that the class wasn't worth the money and didn't cover the material for the exam. In addition, I felt that Inspektor's class was working on the student as a whole. Inspektor incorporates writing every day into the class which has made both girls so much faster when writing and given them the ability to quickly analyze/comment. Many times the assignment is short, but it builds a comfort and speed with both the material and writing in general that was lacking in the AIM class. I wish there was a live component to Inspektor's class, but the daily messages that the students post build a sense of community that, to my surprise, didn't exist with the AIM class, even with the live component. I've felt that both my girls learned a great deal from reading and commenting on others' work applying the rubric and receiving others' comments on their work. I was initially really opposed to this aspect and ended up feeling that it's one of the factors that makes the class strong. I will say that my dd wasn't stressed at all with the AIM class or the requirements during the year, but she was pretty traumatized when she started taking practice exams and felt she wasn't prepared. I knew that others have taken this class and scored well, and Inspektor's class was full at the time. I'd recommend it if you have a student who really doesn't need the class in order to do well on the exam (already knows the material or self studies well) or doesn't want to take the exam. I thought Mrs. Serbicki was very pleasant as a person. It just wasn't at all the level of class I was looking for or feel was worth the money. If I had it to do over, I would have had dd2 take Inspektor's Lit class before Lang, just to have made sure she took her classes rather than the AIM class. DD2 works slower than DD1, and has had days where she wishes Inspektor's class took less time. But, that contrasts with her spending very little time in Serbicki's class and definitely not developing the skills/knowledge base as a result. My final feedback would be that if your student is strong enough to not need Inspektor's class, don't spend the money on the AIM class and just self prep. DD1 could have self prepped, and yet, I feel her two classes with Inspektor were two of the best experiences she had. Just realized you asked about feedback....my girls have gotten much more feedback in general and much more precise feedback in Inspektor's class. I think that with what you describe as your ds' love for reading, he would be depressed by the lack of material covered in the AIM class. Not the quantity or breadth I expect from an AP class.
  16. They’ve published the results of preliminary studies that identify some of the genes associated with more and less likelihood of getting Covid. Early on it was linked to blood Type O being less likely and, now, Type A being more likely, but have gone on to identify specific genes.
  17. Thanks to all of you! Yes, I think her pediatrician would recommend it. We recently changed doctors, but I think she'd refer her. Is there someone recommended on the East Coast? I don't mind driving for a qualified neuro psych. I'd hate to go through all of this to end up with someone who dislikes homeschoolers or isn't open to hearing what we've observed/gone through.
  18. Hi all, My dd is 16 and has always been homeschooled. We've always known that she had difficulties processing and retaining information, but we postponed testing as we were accommodating her at home, and I knew that I would need current neuro psych results for standardized testing and supports in college. She took the PSAT in 9th and the school district allowed her to have extra time because she didn't need formal documentation at that age. Now that she's 16, we need to submit a case to the College Board for testing accommodations. She took AP exams both in 9th and 10th grade, and as we predicted, struggled without the extra time for testing. I called my insurance company and was told that a neuro psych exam is only covered if it's medically necessary. What makes it medically necessary and covered by insurance? I had emailed the local high school regarding having her tested with them and didn't get an answer. Are they legally required to test her? Thanks so much!
  19. Thanks so much for posting 🙂 Do you anticipate that students will spend 2 hours per day on the course? My older daughter took Carole's class and did very well on the AP exam, but she works incredibly fast. I was wondering what the time estimate per week for a more typical student would be.
  20. Hi all, My older dd took Stats with Carol Matheny. I'm thinking of having younger dd take AP Stats this year, but Carol has retired. It seems that both teachers at PAH are new this year. Does anyone here have personal experience with either instructor? I'm definitely not looking for busy work for this dd, but I also need a solid class. She doesn't find it easy to self prep right before the exam, so I don't think she'd do well just prepping on her own. Thanks!
