  1. It can also count as part of the requirements for the Citizenship pin in Cub Scouts.
  2. Definitely story-songs! Other examples: Copacabana (Barry Manilow) The Gambler (Kenny Rogers) Harper Valley PTA (Jeannie Riley)
  3. E.g. Me and My Bobby McGee (Janis Joplin) A Boy Named Sue (Johnny Cash) Gimme Three Steps (Lynyrd Skynyrd) Ode to Billie Joe (Bobbie Gentry) :bigear:
  4. :grouphug::grouphug: If it is possible for your doc to write you a script for epinephrine in a vial and a sterile syringe, I would ask for several of those right way. Maybe you can get Epipens from Australia. Epipenephrine is the drug of choice to treat anaphylaxis, and I can't begin to imagine how Epipen scarcity must make you feel. (except more determined, of course) If you can get your son to put into words any early sensations (particularly in the airway) he felt before he or you saw actual hives, it may help him later identify emergent symptoms if this happens again when every second counts. More :grouphug:.
  5. STEM= Science, Technology, Engineering, Math STEM Education Has Little to Do With Flowers
  6. Don't scare his momma for sure! We know an ultra geeky middle age guy as you describe as a family friend. I asked him and he also said to check out thinkgeek.com, or if the guy has a fish tank, maybe some glow in the dark fish (http://www.glofish.com).
  7. How about a bouquet of roses where each rose is a different color?
  8. :iagree: She was in charge of a foster baby the same weekend she chose to execute this experiment? "It all began on Oct. 1, after Stilwell spent a weekend alone with her children while their dad, Dylan, was away playing golf. Also in the house was a foster baby, as Stilwell is a social worker by profession and regularly takes in infants in need of temporary homes." And then all the screaming and drama inside during the real cleanup ...? Poor baby.
  9. Let's do that now. To see how this policy is disabling rather than empowering, let's think it through ... Why should racial achievement potentials only affect adolescents? How about if the school district came up with another school policy that says by 2018 all Asian, Black, White, Latino teachers must be able to get 91%, 74%, 88%, 81%, respectively, of their whole (diverse, mixed race, whathaveyou) class at grade level in order to get a raise? Suddenly this policy would seem racist, and teachers may complain -- mainly Asian teachers. But suppose there aren't many Asian teachers anyway, so their complaints are largely ignored. And the other teachers kind of like it because it makes it relatively easier for them to get raises. But after a while, school superintendents would say, "Hmmm, why should our district ever hire any non-Asian teachers at all? Maybe we should only recruit Asian teachers. Afterall, it is our longstanding position that they actually get the job done. AND WE SURE DO NEED THE JOB DONE!" My point is, the ALL CAPS statement is what every employer in the world has as top priority. They want the job done by the most able candidate in absolute terms. Not the candidate who is doing all that was expected of his racial class. So the message sent is worst than that of a racist one, it is a unrealistic one grown in fantasyland that tells students that everyone should take one look at you and adjust their standards according to you -- that these artificial constructs we invented in this institution will in any way serve you once you leave these 4 walls.
  10. Well let's have a Saturnalia party but call it Christmas. And if it catches on, it just might replace Saturnalia.
  11. You're right. Title now edited. We have central AC too but I just felt guilty making it (really, them) work so hard. I had the toaster oven and stovetop going as usual, and lots of outdoor patio cooking but using the indoor oven felt wrong somehow. I see I now have a not so secret weirdness.
  12. ... without feeling guilty. Was there anyone else who didn't bake anything all summer? My oven has not been on since early May. I wonder if I should've titled this more along the lines of a 'my secret weirdness' thread?)
  13. I hope they're getting the picture after you had a word with them. My guess is there are other was they will devise that su casa es mi casa.
  14. Wow I had no idea of "voluntary" tent sharing with the BSA. I am still so used to CSA and the no unrelated humans in the same tent rule. Forgetting the poles is one thing, but I can't imagine intentionally showing up for camping without a tent!
  15. I haven't been affected by b.c. within my family, and I feel no annoyance with Breast Cancer Awareness month. In fact, I had no idea it was BCAW prior to this thread. Thanks for raising my awareness!
  16. It's no fun to feel neglected, and the other women should be woman enough to keep their word or just say no. (You could give one last try by planning an outing centered around a performance or an admission price that involves non-refundable money upfront. Magically people always show when they are pre-paid.) Overall, you're a better mom than I am. I don't make a lot of effort to hold special 1:1 play dates. They must always be at a park where at least 2 other families are invited. This way there is less chance for disappointment.
  17. I'm going to draw the line at s'more variants that somehow include bacon, ok? I never could get on the bacon confection bandwagon though.
  18. Thank you. All these years, I've been confectionally illterate.
  19. Love them, but only if they are made fresh for me. Preferably with dark choc. With a cup of coffee. The bigger question: Can anyone say what the apostrophe replaces in s'mores? What is the non-elided word for s'mores?
  20. I'm guessing you never signed a photo release? I don't like photos of my kids floating around on the internet either. Video is a bit weirder ... what "college stuff"? Could she have said video collage? Not that that makes it much better. You should ask her if has other footage of your child and ask her to delete it all if that's what you want.
  21. Accomplished swimmers have drown in the pool. Shallow water blackout is caused intentionally by trying to force your body to stay underwater longer. http://www.swimmingcoach.org/articles/9903/9903-1.htm A lifeguard at our local pool had to pull out a high school swim team kid who thought he should try to hold his breath longer underwater.
  22. I saw this thread earlier this morning and was wondering what they consensus would be. It seems that you only put someone to watch kids if that someone is actually capable of doing something helpful for the watchee. What if a mom can't swim, but she tries to rescue a drowning child? Also, it should be that the fewer people in the pool, the easier the lifeguard's job is.
  23. Asians can then cry discrimination that there are not very few or zero Asians on the varsity basketball and football teams so those sports must be racially discriminatory too.
