  1. Just thought of two more: Custom fit weather tech floor mats in the van!!! Pull out and spray off every few months! Catches puke too! Amazing for a clean(ER) car. DH has a clock that projects the time onto the ceiling. I hated it at first. Now I love to pop open one eye to see how much longer I have before my 4 year old comes in!
  2. For me, because someone asked, this is hypothetical. It's never happened to me IRL. But I kinda think it would be cool and it might actually happen since it seems like the world is small
  3. Not fixated. Just interested. Also, and this happens to me a lot - one topic seems to keep popping up over and over in a short period of time. I guess it is front of mind. Generally, I do not care.
  4. Are you a side, back, or front sleeper? Asking because your pain might not necessarily be related to the mattress, but your hips, sacrum, or lumbar region could be out of alignment and you may be feeling the affects of that after your body lays down for a long time and they get stiff. I had the same troubles, so that is why I am wondering. Most chiropractors recommend sleeping on the back, as that allows the body to be best aligned. If you are on your side, then sleep with a pillow between your legs. We have a Serta - it has been wonderful. Generally, firm mattresses do not allow your body to keep its natural shape when at rest and do more pushing. Mattresses that allow for give against your natural contour put less pressure on your spine and hips. I would tend to shop for one that was softer than firmer.
  5. They pass out a customs form on the plane prior to landing. Have him make sure he has a pen on him - black ink. Then, this form is viewed with his passport once he deplanes and goes through customs. The form is just a disclosure of who he is and what he is doing, what he is carrying if it is out of the ordinary (large sums of cash, agricultural stuff, etc.)
  6. I do not own rental properties; however, I have worked in banking/finance. Generally, it is advised that people spend no more than 30% of their before tax income on housing if they are in a HCOL area and no more than 25% of their before tax income on housing if they are in a LCOL area. These percentages include rent/mortgage as well as utilities and homeowners'/renters' insurance. You do the math based on their figures that you have. But, for example, if the apartment costs $700 monthly without utilities and renters' insurance included, then that's $8,400 annually in rent alone. ($700 x 12). If they earn $28,000 disclosed annually before taxes, then their housing allotment should be no more than $8,400 in HCOL areas and $7,000 in LCOL areas. But that $8,400 and $7,000 needs to include the utilities and renter's insurance. If your gut is telling you "no," then trust that. But the math figures will help strengthen your decision based on the data they have provided. Can they afford your place and not live beyond their means? Also, I know and understand that a lot of people make a living "under the table." But why? The fact that he is refusing to provide basic data to you does not sit well with me. You are taking a risk by renting to them, they have to fully disclose. Period. If a person is unwilling to provide tax returns, to a "business" then I say "No, we cannot offer you our services." You are not a charity. I may seem mean on this, but I have seen far too many people get messed up and screwed over by people renting. It is not pretty and it gets ugly. Caveat: As a young person, my dad had to co-sign with me on my first apartment. I agree with PPs that if the co-signer can provide proof of assets and/or income, then I say that you possibly rent to them with a 12 month lease and a full month's rent as a signing requirement. The co-signer needs to be employed with longevity, pass a credit check, and provide proof of income/assets.
  7. In September, we supposed to rent an RV and drive to the Black Hills and then on to Yellowstone with the kids. But, during the past week or two Yellowstone has had 460+ small earthquakes (called a swarm). Most are in the 2-3 range. I believe the highest have been 4s. I know YNP, gets earthquake swarms every few years. We will probably just watch this situation over the next two months. But, would this cause you not to visit Yellowstone? Is this no big deal?
  8. We switched when the kids were dry for a month or more.
  9. and it just so happens that the people talking are discussing this Forum or any other one you frequent. Do you pop over and say "hi" or ignore them? Do you think it would be neat to put a face to a screen name?
  10. The first-aid kit next to the kitchen sink. And the one in the diaper bag. Rolls of trash basket liners left in the bottoms of the trash baskets, so replacement is easy. Toilet cleaning supplies in each bathroom rather than one set for the entire house. A heavy duty, water absorbent large rug in the mud room entry from the garage - it catches so much crud. A no shoes worn in the house policy. Amazon Subscribe and Save - Every month. A 3" folding knife in the diaper bag as well as an LED flashlight. A rotating toy bin schedule so the kids do not have all their toys out at once. A bin labeled "basement" inside the closet in which I place anything that needs to disappear down there. When it is full, I move it down and empty it.
  11. I'm kind of saddened to read everybody's jury call proceedings. In my county here in MN, they tell you you're being called for selection for two weeks. Every day during that two weeks the potential juror calls a hotline to find out if s/he is needed for the next day. S/he can still work and earn an income or fulfill obligations. They just simply call in every morning. My mom just did this. She called one morning and discovered she was needed the next day. Each daily pool consisted of 40 potential jurors. They show up and go through selection at the courthouse. If they are not selected, they are released from the obligation. All this fosters a willingness to help the jury process; there really is no burden on one's time or income unless one is called in.
  12. Had mine done in 2004. Cole Eye Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. I was in my early 20s. My mom was an RN in the Clinic at that time and got a huge employee discount. The rest of the cost was a graduation gift from my parents. Super emotional to receive that from them...but I digress. I had horrible near sidedness. Got glasses in 2nd grade kind of stuff. Bound to contacts and glasses all my life. I was so near sided that the dr did the procedure and had to do a touch up to it in the left eye. The second procedure was horrible. I had a huge anxiety attack in the op room. They had to stop. My brain already knew what to expect so it hyped me up. I highly advise something to calm your nerves if that tends to be a problem for you. At the time, I had to sleep with soft goggles on at night so I wouldn't bump my eyes. But the surgery effects are immediate. Now, 13 years later I'm still 20/20 but some of the sharpness of my vision has decreased. I have a small prescription I wear at night while driving. It's not legally required for me, but it gives me some added night time definition and makes me feel more comfortable. Any slipping back into needing glasses for driving or reading are due to the eyes aging so it will happen. I would do it again. Oh, I have blue eyes too and I think my eyes are more sensitive to sunlight now. I wear sunglasses pretty much everyday even in winter.
  13. Readers. Ushers. People to pass out bulletins/programs. People to pass out flowers or whatever you're throwing (if you do that).
  14. WH tour....you need to plan ahead for that and get a pass from your federal legislator's office (at least that's what I recall). I liked Ford's Theatre and the house where Lincoln died. Holocaust Museum. As for memorials - probably Lincoln and Vietnam. They are so iconic.
  15. Oh LOL. This is my life! I just found a completely brand new and now all used up roll of tape under my sons' bunk bed. DD has Minnie Mouse hanging from four points to her doll house. When boxes come we have to have a train...
  16. Jurors are not there to make a fasion statement, ruffle feathers, or get attention. I think the dress codes are in place to make jurors look plain. We forget the main focus of the trial is the defendent. If I were one, I would like a clean, tidy, and modestly dressed jury. Someones' life hangs in these peoples' hands, so yes I do think the focus should not be on them and that the jury should blend away in terms of appearance. It is kind of the same reason some schools have uniforms. Obviously, juries cannot have uniforms, but they can look uniform in a clean and professional sense. Respect comes from the attitude of the person. There is nothing wrong with brands of clothing or its newness. All I would hope for a jury is for them to be neat, clean, and modest, and not look like they just mowed the lawn, worked out, or rolled out of bed. There should be a standard of dress. There is one in pretty much every field - the court is no exception. If people are so hung up on dress for a jury, follow suit then and head into a job interview not dressed for the part one hoped to play in that school or company...but people do not because that is silly. We should extend the same courtesy to the people who make up the court and the defendant.
  17. Yes! Back in the day, didn't some skorts have a skirt front but shorts at the back? I think I may have had a pair of those...
  18. I wouldn't. But, it sounds like they are trying to eliminate casual attire. In my experience, most capris fall into the casual attire category, it sounds like the court sees it that way too. It also sounds like the court's dress code description has not been updated to reflect current clothing styles/trends as I would consider leggings inappropriate for court (they are too open ended and can be worn in a variety of ways and fabrics - some just outright awful/unprofessional looking - same with minis).
  19. Yup. For sure! LOL and us in Costco, Walmart, Or Target for these items would require two carts. 4 kids in tow. Huge loading and unloading ordeal...me grumpy...hot...repeating "Buckle up." "Don't touch your sister!" "Please sit down." No, you cannot open the dog food..." I say, let Hilda our delivery lady bring it (she likes to!).
  20. if so, does your community have a nursery? How much per child does your community charge for the nursery? Or, do you do parent volunteers, do they rotate? Asking because we do CC and I, gulp, got kinda roped into setting up and organizing the nursery care for next year and I am trying to compare to see what is a reasonable charge the families to pay the care workers. Also, I am sorry if this is the wrong place to post this topic. I poked around and was not sure it was applicable to any of the other boards in the Community.
  21. haha. As I was writing my response, I thought, "I'd better put this in here in case I am misreading her." Yes, you could treat the line as a loan and just pay based off the overall amount you opened the line for since you know you will be most likely using the entire thing. That would be very aggressive!
  22. The best deals are when you buy to get that overall discount - it can be like 15%-20% as you stated. We do TP, paper towels, dog food, kids' shampoo, toothpaste, feminine products, deodorant, fruit/veggie wash, toilet bowl cleaner, laundry detergent, wipes, diapers, ground coffee, Goldfish snacks, pet floor cleaner (my dog sometimes has accidents), paper napkins... Basically, I sat down one day and went through my head all the non-perishable, but consumables we use and I began searching for them in Subscribe and Save. Now, not every brand is available, so I had to make a few adjustments, but that was okay. Some things come only every 6 months, but because they are listed, they go toward the discount in the month they are set to arrive.
  23. You only pay back what you borrow. For example, if your HELOC is opened for $50k but you only draw out $10k, then you only pay back the $10k. It operates exactly the same way as a credit card, but your interest is lower and you have your house securing it as collateral. What that $50k means is the overall amount the bank is willing to LET you borrow off the line. What you chose to draw off of it is up to you. Some people just have HELOCs open indefinitely for emergencies (I do not advise that personally, but have seen it done). They might have a $25k HELOC with a $0 balance. At least...I think this is what you are asking. I am sorry if I misunderstood your post.
  24. You said she has Reynauds. I do not know anything about that, but if she carries meds, I would consider checking on any medication disclosure requirements for the country(ies) she is entering/traveling through. It is probably no big deal, but better to be on the safe side and be aware of the nations' requirements for disclosure and whether or not they require doctors' notes to accompany it. I personally like to travel with a cross-body bag (hands free) and it keeps all my important things at my front, rather than on my back as a backpack does. There are a few that are impervious to knives (some pick-pockets have been know to slit holes in bags and empty the contents), but that is not a requirement. I tend to like ones that have zipper closures, as flaps only still have areas thieves' hands can enter. Photo copies of her passport. Cash on her person, but not all in the same spot. If she does not yet have a credit card with a chip...the chip is required at most places now abroad. For toiletries, just small versions of what she uses anyways for travel and then she can buy what she needs over there. Whatever shoes she isn't wearing, should be stuffed with socks and underwear. Roll clothing. I second those puffy coats that go down into near nothing. They are so warm and do a great job. If she is taking her smart phone (I'm assuming she has one), I would upgrade her screen cover (Zagg) and outer cover to make it more resistant to drops and scratches. Lastly, I like to know the location of the U.S. Embassies and/or consulates in the nations/cities I am visiting. Just in case.
  25. I think Birkenstock makes a sandal that has more of a thong that goes up the center of the foot. Those shoes, also seemed to have arch support. Possibly Crocs? Perhaps do a search on Zappos.com
