  1. IMHO - Would do Spielvogel in one year in 11th grade for 1 credit of World History then do both Gov/Econ in 12th for 1/2 credit each. Keep it simple.
  2. Son applied but didn't receive. In TN, it is a lottery based (name out of the hat) type of selection though the hat is filled with certain level of gpa/test score students. A good point is it is one of the few that can be used at out of state colleges. It never hurts to try - go for it!
  3. Similar experience for my son ... in the computer area though. But in the end, I think ds is going to continue working for the engineering company that he has had an internship with the last 1 1/2 years via computer from college. The company recently offered that to him - working a flexible 5 - 10 hours remotely. What a blessing!

  5. Oh I am jealous too - sounds wonderful. Either way he decides, this adventure will be a plus for him. Keep us updated on his wonderful trip!
  6. Okay I am with you here on minimalist guy (a way of not quite saying boy, teen or man!haha). As long as he has a few clothes and his computer/electronics, he is generally happy. We just returned from Freshmen orientation and minimal is good for the space he will have. But even with that said - I am going with 2 sets of sheets. Just in case of an emergency change is needed with no time to wash immediately. He picked 3 towels and a set of 5 coordinating washclothes on his own shopping trip. His clock/alarm is covered with several different electronics (hope the power doesn't go out). Also he picked up a flashlight which I think is actually a good thought and a tower fan since he always runs hot (no air conditioning in freshment dorms). My other thoughts - a few basics med things all in one plastic case/box would be good - band aids, headache meds... office/school supplies waterprof backpack (rains/snows lots at his school) shower flipflops 3M hooks - the ones that are easily removable That should start the list going....
  7. Son accepted to all schools applied to, accepted into honor programs, and offered scholarships to all with 2 years of French. As always - ask the college and look at the particular major. But remember that colleges also offer courses to remediate if necessary.
  8. Our experience was to take SAT Math 2 after PreCalc and skip Math 1 test altogether. The colleges he applied to this past year seemed to like that plan.
  9. Boy do I agree with this! :grouphug: And we even use Chalkdust - books and lectures. But it is done with lots discussion and interaction with me - I have watched many a lecture with my guys in order to facilitate proper pauses, working of problems, and further discussions.
  10. We always worked on note taking by writing key words down then from key words make your own sentences or combining several sections of keywords into more complex sentences. I think that IEW teaches it this way... It is hard to teach that too early but around 5-6 grades worked for us. Susie
  11. Another pleased customer - I had my graduating senior do a private 6 week "class" with Rebekah to ensure that his research paper techniques and writing abilities are where they need to be for college this coming fall. We were pleased with the teacher, material, and the end product - an interesting research paper. Since we were so pleased with math guy's experience, we signed up younger ds, literature guy, for 2 one semester literature courses next school year. It will be his first "outside the home" class (at home)! haha Happy Customer - Susie
  12. DS #2 is in exactly the same situation. Will finish over summer. He loved book #1 and finished up early with it.
  13. Thanks! That does sound like a good read and food for thought. And a couple of books to pick up and read over the summer is good... I have always left "unassigned" books laying about the house and strangely they have seem to get read! haha
  14. that will nicely do. Contains just the topics that would be good to cover.. at least for our family. Thanks! "College 101: Campus Life for Christians" Concordia Publishing, 2010
  15. I am in the boat too with an upcoming 11th grade ds "home alone" after his big brother graduates this year. I'm all ears:bigear:
  16. Thank so much! The Chemistry looks good for my younger son. The videos and student material are all there. So I will throw out the question - Can a homeschool teacher, not in GA, get the teacher materials associated with the program?:bigear:
  17. I looked over "You're On Your Own (But I'm Here if You Need Me): Mentoring Your Child During the College Years" by Marjorie Savage and think I will order it for myself. But haven't found exactly what I had in mind for son - we are Christians and he will be going to a Christian U but ...
  18. Valparaiso - my oldest will be attending next year. It fit his criteria of a small LAC with great professional studies. Top 371 college (Princeton Review) with great financial aid and undergraduate research opportunities. Lutheran. Auburn is a great research school but way too big for my son. Just a thought.....
  19. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good introduction to college type book? Something that will bring up topics to discuss before heading off. Sure, freshmen orientation will help with this but a book to read and ponder over the summer would be nice. I see all kinds of books on amazon like "College Survival Guide," "A Homeschoolers Guide to College" and such. Maybe a book for ds and a book for parents - any ideas? Thanks! Susie
