  1. Maybe when that car drives by ... the sun stands still (in awe! haha) My younger ds just read a book about advertising "Made You Look:The Truth about Advertising." And he agrees, there is a lot in the name. He commented that KY Fried Chicken's sales increased when they changed their name to KFC (because people were not being reminded that they were eating that bad fried food! haha) Are we that dumb? haha
  2. I too would like to know more. Considering a class for my 10th grader who suddenly is showing interest in medical field. It would have to be on-line for us. Anyone else? susie
  3. I recently saw a link to this page about requirements to several colleges in a chart form (appeals to my mathie-ness!haha) - whether the ACT or SAT is required; SAT 2s and how many; whether superscoring is allowed and so on. Read about it on the homemade-ed blogspot . You may or may not find it helpful - depending on colleges you are looking at. In general, I would say ask the college. When we visited Vanderbilt, they said no SAT 2s required in their group presentation. But when we spoke to the homeschool specific admission counselor, he indicated they like to see 2 from homeschool applicants. Susie
  4. Thank you Julie! We are just trying to get math boy thru French 2. Guess we are doing okay then.
  5. What did you combine with French The Easy Way to make it a complete program? We have it. My mathie kid prefers its layout and straight forward approach. In additon, we are using The Easy French Reader along with watching the French in Action videos on Annenberg site. But I don't feel it is complete. So any suggestions? Thanks!
  6. ... A side note: My oldest ds had his wisdom teeth out in Aug. He was also very diligant about the cleaning/washing out but suddenly noticed a bump in cheek/jaw line. The oral surgeon made small cut to open that side's gumline and washed it out - somehow food had gotten in to it. A shot of penicillin along with 3 days worth of antibiotic meds and it cleared up wonderfully - no further problems. It must be quite common. Sorry about the timing for your son though. He will mend quickly I am sure. Susie
  7. that sounds like such a nice idea to blend in movies. We will be using the Great Source Government book (in the 2nd semester of this year) so I have a bit of time to ponder which ones would work for us. I don't watch much tv either but I did catch the BBC Pritchard show on PBS last year - love Masterpiece or Mystery shows. Thanks again for the ideas!
  8. That is actually what I would suggest - you can search on miles from your zip or states, size of school, major, and many other criteria. Cannot tell you how many times I have used it in the past year!
  9. Rhodes (in Memphis a major city though) Hendrix (in AK - if my son would be going to LAC, I would pursue this one.)Centre (around Lexington,KY) Actually just realized all of these are in the Colleges That Change Lives. You might want to check out their website ( www.ctcl.org). We went to one of their roadshows last fall and many of the colleges are pretty interesting.
  10. Thanks momof7 - lots of good inside info... campus life, IMs, honors program, and housing.
  11. there is a brand new dorm that houses freshman that opened this fall (with bathroom per room!) and another dorm in the building stage that will open the fall 2010. But the others are... as you said. The news reported this week that TN Tech is putting kids up in local hotels because of increased enrollment and limited housing. To me this is not an optimal situation. So the word is apply early and get those housing requests in extra early. So question ... with living off campus, has your son felt a good sense of community or is that something that doesn't matter to him? I really want ds to have that sense of community because of his high school years have been without a true sense of it - resulting from ... move to another state, injury that took him out of sports with a long recovery time and now short time attitude with college on the horizon ... life. He really felt connected and fit in at Rose.
  12. My son is also interested in the smaller engineering schools. His first love/choice is Rose Hulman a very small school of about 1800 - he attended their summer "Operation Catapult" program and would go back today if he could. But they are quite expensive so he will apply and then decide considering financial pkg. He is also considering TN Tech as his "fall back" school so it is good to hear the positives because he is not overly impressed with campus and such. Think his words were "state institution." haha I should mention that we know from experience that the people - staff and faculty - at TN Tech are very nice and approachable as he goes there to take the AMC and TMTA math contests each year for the last 3 years even though it is a 2 hour drive for us. The math department has been very welcoming and encouraging to him. A fellow at our church just finished his degree in microbiology/biochemestry (cannot remember which major) at TN Tech having much the same experience as your son and was just accepted into Vanderbilt's grad program for this fall. His advice to my son was to go to the less expensive for undergrad and go to the other "name" for graduate. Son is also considering U of Evansville, Valpo, and perhaps Vanderbilt. Thanks again for posting! I am forwarding it to my son.
  13. What about Hendrix? It sounds interesting.
  14. I have enjoyed reading your reviews. susie
  15. ... I needed a laugh as I am now a mom of a rising senior. Susie
  16. I believe June 25th you can see them on line at the collegeboard site. We are looking for SAT 2 results.
  17. under their Meteorology Dept. which is suppose to be one of the best. It looks very interesting and if you poke around you might more info on entrance requirements and possible job opportunities. Susie
  18. What a wonderful opportunity! And I am having sympathy pains for you since my oldest - an upcoming senior too - is leaving for a 3 week summer engineering program at Rose Hulman this Saturday. A wonderful opportunity but I am anticipating missing him. Guess it is prep for the real thing - going to college. Susie :grouphug:
  19. but I have the VHS version of the previous edition of Chalk Dust Calc that I snapped up last summer because of rarity of seeing it used. I have seen it recently on another homeschool swapboard but a quick search this morning doesn't show it. I would list it as a wtb item on homeschoolclassifieds board - that is a good place to pick up a used Chalk Dust sets. Have you checked with PA Homeschoolers - don't they sell used Chalk Dust sets? Will keep my eye open for you on other boards. Glad to hear Cynde's comments because that is the philosophy I was taking - it doesn't hurt to repeat in college maybe at honor's level. Happy Curriculum Hunting! susie
  20. Number correct - (number missed)(0.25) = raw score The raw score is then correlated to a score on the 800 scale. Looks like you can either not answer a couple or miss a few and still get 800 from looking at the scale in the "Official SAT 2" book. DO you have one taking SAT 2 tomorrow? My oldest is taking SAT 2 Math 2 tomorrow morn. susie
  21. How are you using Chalkdust? Are you watching the videos with her? How many problems are you assigning? I have both a math oriented student and a liberal arts oriented student too and both have done well with Chalkdust. But I don't "work" the curriculum the same for them - you know what I mean? Susie
  22. Does your son have interest in computers? If so, you may be surprised how well he will do. My oldest took Visual Programming this past year and will take C++ next. He loves it. Susie
