1. I am considering this for next year but this has been driving me nuts! We follow the LCC-well, we try to ;)- so next year in history we study ancient greece.....and the following year rome (if i am understanding correctly). So then should I wait to start LL until ds is in 4th because of the history component? I do not want to confuse or overwhelm him. What program would be a good intro to LL? We are doing Song School now but I wonder if it will really take all year so whatever I get could in fact be for the end of this school year. DH suggested skipping the history....but it sort of feels like we are paying for the whole program and there must be a reason it is included. Thank you for any insight!
2. It is our turn to pick a book for book club and I would love some suggestions! The book club is for ages 6-9 and we try to chose chapter books with some meat to them- something we can talk about. I think that is the prob...lol...b/c although ds loves to read he is into lots of series-boxcar children, encyclopedia brown, etc. He did think One day in the Woods by jean craighead george (at least some of her other books had some kind of theme, I am assuming this would) but when I checked the library only had one copy. I am going to check the local bookstore to see if it is stocked....but when I go I thought it would be nice to have a few others to choose from. Plus it would be nice to have him read something new too. He also loves the thornton burgess stories but again they are hard to find. I want it to be somehting he enjoys b/c the last pick was one I chose and he hated it and was horrified 'his' pick was used on such an awful story . Any ideas?
3. It was not unorganized! Thank you for your time and thoughts!
4. For those that followed LCC in younger years- did you have notebooks for each subject with narrations and such? Did you keep list of reading ala WTM? I can't decide on that.
5. I have been thinking of Monday Math Challenge....Tuesday Tea (afternoon tea w/sweets and poetry reading). I will have to check out those links!
6. I woudl love to hear which latin programs are rigorous and secular! I read his book this summer and am trying to implement it. This would be for a 3rd grader (next school year). Or which ones out there are "easy" and therefore I will stay away. Someone mentioned notebooks and I have been wondering about that. On the one hand, it helps me to write things down, so perhaps we should have a (for example) literature notebook where ds narrates what the myth was about then draws a picture. Or not? I have friends irl who have all these notebooks and I worry perhaps I should do something like this? I am enjoying reading everyone's thoughts!
7. I get the strangest looks when I tell people Pooh makes me cry. So glad to hear I am not the only one! I have not even tried Charlotte's Web yet. I am kind of scared :tongue_smilie:
8. That sounds so hard. I am sorry....have you discussed with dh how long you all are going to try ps? Maybe that will help you and ds feel better? And, I don't know....maybe the experience at ps will help ds to *want* to do his work with you?
9. We used Epson Salt. Guess that is the same thing :shrug
10. trying again- not a great pic but you get the idea.....
11. I dont know if this is on here or not...I tried to attach a picture of the one we made one for ds. It was fun! It is 2 cabinets from the scratch and dent section and the same for the counter top. It was like 25 I think. We changed the hinge on the oven door so it opened like a real one. The pots and pans I got at a thrift store.
12. I think I might ask her to pick a topic to learn and then let her pick out resources for it from the library. Have you tried that? And for the first few times (at least--maybe more) I would let her pick whatever it was even if it was nt a core subject. Then I think -after a while- hopefully I could point out and she could understand why it is important to recognize grammar, how math fits in, etc. Maybe she needs some confidence and control over what she is doing.
13. A to Z and Encyclopedia Brown were the series that got ds hooked. Sonlight has a nice list I think http://www.sonlight.com/readers-2-int.html My ds also loves loves LOVES thornton burgess books.
14. That is too funny! They also have some things published with Kendall Hunt...I emailed them this morning to see if I could get more info or samples so if anyone responds I will update.
15. Has anyone ordered anything from The Center for Gifted Education at William and Mary? It is also for high achieving students. I would LOVE to hear anything you know :bigear:. Thank you!
16. I am a dork and do not know how to attach this pdf and really am too tired to think about it but if you google cuisenairebook.pdf you should come up with a neat book for some games. It starts "When my third child, Sophie, was 4, her older siblings..." might give you inspiration even if it is too young for your dc. I would remove the numbers.
17. I have a rising 2nd grader and I am curious how others "do" memory work? How do you organize it? Where does your poetry, geography, etc. go? Do you review it periodically? Do you memorize facts in geography, poems, etc in one week or do you work on one subject/week? I am also wondering if you memorize people/dates for history with this young of a child. Do they remember for any length of time? Any other tips/suggestions? Thanks in advance!
18. This board moves fast. I am wondering also.
19. I am wondering about this also. I decided not too for now but I want to in the next year or two. I emailed them and he did say there is no contract so if your child doesnt like it, you can just stop subscribing.
20. *sigh* I wish I could help you out but I can not make up my mind either  Mostly just wanted to let you know you are not alone. I was thinking today that maybe I needed to make my choice and then ban the internet :tongue_smilie:
21. I had to look up "health lessons" b/c I was not really sure what that was :tongue_smilie:...but briefly the topics were things like making good food choices, not being a couch potato, no to drugs, etc. Isn't that just living in a family? Maybe it is me but I am constantly explaining why they can not eat that and have to eat this, kicking them outside for fresh air and exercise, reminding about self care.
22. I think these are pretty new which may be why no one knows. I asked my question on the forums over at classical writing. I do not know the rules if I can post the link or whatever........To paraphrase, yes they suggest you get the teacher help but you can download it cheaply. It has extra info. She could not think of any picture study that was overly religious and the narrations are mainly drawn from Aesop and Burgess. I asked if I could substitute stuff it got too much and she said it could be done easily. I think we might try it!
23. :iagree: You said it better than I did...that is exactly what I am wondering also.
