  1. Hi, I know this response is about a month and a half late, but I was just wondering the same thing. My son is about halfway through Cambridge Latin 2, and I am wondering what I might use as a supplement. Since he is basically teaching himself, a bit more structured approach to grammar would be helpful. Does anyone have ideas or experience with this? Thanks, Tiffany
  2. :lurk5: Thank you so much for sharing your opinions on this. I'm looking for the right biology curriculum for my son for next year. Tiffany
  3. It would be just for the one book. I realize it's not outrageous at all; I just thought it odd that it was free for some, but not for others. Tiffany
  4. I have heard from Norton! After demonstrating that I was a genuine homeschool teacher, I've been offered access for one year at a cost of $20. Any idea why it would be free for one person, and $20 for someone else? Tiffany
  5. I've had the same experience. Very frustrating! Tiffany
  6. I've already used it once, but it can be used two more times, according to the fine print: 351565AXFNHC It's for free shipping on an order of $35 or more, through 12/23/11. Happy shopping! Tiffany
  7. :bigear: This is wonderful info! Thanks, all, for sharing. Tiffany
  8. Thanks, regentrude. That's very helpful. I had a feeling it would be too good to be true. I see from your signature that one of your children uses Exploring Life for biology. Would you recommend it for a family that finds science interesting, but will probably not produce any serious scientists? I particularly want to find a program/book that will make doing labs relatively easy and not too teacher-intensive. Does such a thing exist? Thanks, Tiffany
  9. Garber's Biology: A Self-Teaching Guide is suggested in TWTM, to be used along with lab texts (such as Janice Van Cleave) and original sources from antiquity (Hippocrates, Aristotle, etc.). Does anyone actually use this plan? I've searched the forums, but I haven't found much on this topic. I'm trying to plan for next year for biology for my now-8th-grader. My husband doesn't want to use Apologia, and I'm looking for alternatives that aren't terribly teacher-intensive. Help! Tiffany
  10. Yes, I agree, just list performance experience. It's fine to have a list of classical repertoire that he has studied in depth, but I wouldn't include it on a resume unless it's specifically requested. For my music resume (professional violinist and violin teacher), I include major teachers as well. For a student-level composer, I'd include that too. Hope this helps, Tiffany
  11. :bigear: I am really looking forward to hearing the answers to these questions! Tiffany
  12. Just a quick reply as I'm short on time. My children have participated in Math Olympiads for the past 3 years, and we've been very pleased with it. One of our local homeschool support group sponsors it so the few families that participate don't have to pay any fees. (We raise money solely through Box Tops collection.) It's worked very well for the kids to have friends/teammates who are working on the same topics and problems. I investigated MathCounts a bit, and the problems looked more difficult, but that was just a first impression. They do have a free kit of materials that you can request, so that might give you a sense of the difficulty level. HTH, Tiffany
  13. Thanks so much for these suggestions. These are just what I need! Tiffany
  14. Thank you all so much for this thread! I've already found myself chuckling aloud while reading some of the posts, which is really helping to defuse my stress level. Yesterday I actually heard myself tell my kids that if we didn't figure out how to make our homeschool work soon, I'd just give it up. (This would never happen, but I actually said it. BAD mom!) Between my two adolescents and my 5yo, I can't seem to get a break lately. Complain, whine, tell me it's not fair, ... ad nauseum. When they're not doing that, they're interrupting to ask a very important question about whether I can do writing with them -- even though it's obvious that I'm carrying a load of laundry and leading my 5yo to the bathroom, all while watching the next MUS DVD lesson out of the corner of my eye. Anyway, thanks for reminding me that I'm not in this alone. Tiffany
  15. Those lists look good to me. Of course, you know your own children and their abilities and interests best, but I like how your plan has them alternating between more challenging and less challenging titles (i.e., The Hobbit and In the Year of the Boar ...). HTH, Tiffany
