  1. Hi! I could really use some help deciding which books are particularily helpful in preparing students to read the Great Books. For example, I read from the LCC site that Norse Myths help with the reading of the Hobbit. I asked for 20 or so just to keep my list manageable. I would really appreciate any help! Thanks.
  2. The Redeemed Reader blog (children's literature from a thoughtful Christian perspective) has a fun adventure themed summer reading program up and running. We are just jumping on board this week, waiting on books from the library since our budget is tight and curriculum for next year is the priority for book purchases right now. They have a great booklist! Definitely worth downloading. Seven primary read alongs (discussion questions and activities to go with each one) and a list of 100 other excellent around the world themed books of various genres and reading levels.
  3. Sorry, this has gotten pretty long... (ETA see post #31 for my final list for 7th grade and for a question about the appropriateness of dystopian novels I have chosen) I am planning for next year, and always like to have about 20 to 25 classics available for my ds to choose from. I require that he reads 16 per year, 4 of which can be short stories. We will be studying early modern, but the books do not have to be either about that period or from that period, although many I have found so far are. He is a good reader, and can read basically anything, but I want him to really like the books he
  4. I realize that this has been done in some fashion or another before and I also have the WTM but I still think it would be great to brainstorm a list of great books with high literary value:D If they have moral lessons that is a plus;) Anyone?:lurk5:
  5. I've followed some of the threads about Good Books vs Great Books. Some have rightly said that literature for Good Books does not cease in a particular century or decade. My knowledge of children's lit is severely limited when it comes to Modern times, and I was hoping that some of you would share your knowledge and give me some more recent titles to look into for my dc. I am purposely not defining modern as a specific period, so if you consider it a modern work, go ahead and list it. TIA!
  6. I just spent a rather long time putting this list together. I've seen people ask about a list of great books for kids, and I've found this series to be fairly good. If you know of a book I missed from the series please post here or let me know : D Please be aware that some of the books *are* abridged. • Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Puffin Classics) by Mark Twain • Adventures of Robin Hood (Puffin Classics) by Roger Lancelyn Green • Adventures of Tom Sawyer(Puffin Classics) by Mark Twain • Aesop's Fables (Puffin Classics) by Aesop • Aladdin and Other Tales from the Arabian Ni
  7. I'm just curious - there's no "hidden agenda" here - but what books did you read as a kid/teen that stuck with you or that you loved? I'll start: Summer of My German Soldier Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Where the Red Fern Grows Misty of Chincoteague The Black Stallion series Ratha's Creature Sweet Valley High (the early books) Follow the River This was just a list I came up with in under 30-45 seconds. If I took longer, the list would be a lot longer - I loved books as a kid.
  8. that describes river life or a river adventure, such as Huck Finn that would be appropriate for 9-12 year olds (closer to the young end of that spectrum than the old end). (At what age *does* Huck Finn become appropriate? Dh recently reread it & said simply, "Not now!" I have a tendency to think everything I read in highschool or college would be fine for dc at any age because...I guess I compartmentalize the objectionable things from the main story line. :001_huh:) A short story would be fine, too. Any river would work, but something by Twain would be cool. TIA!
  9. I love reading to my sons more than anything on earth. Every now and then, I stumble upon a kids book that just knocks my socks off. I'm talking HEART STOPPING good. Like I need to DROP EVERYTHING and READ THIS OVER AND OVER good. At the very top, top, tippy-top of our list is: Rebecca Caudill and Evaline Ness' "A Pocket full of Cricket" Kenneth Grahame's "The Wind in the Willows" Ezra Jack Keats' "Pet Show" What are your top three? Happy Reading! C
  10. I get my boys one or two books each Christmas. I need some suggestions. He tends to be like me in that he reads by author. When he finds an author he enjoys, he immediately reads ALL of them. Here are the authors/books he has enjoyed in the past. I am looking for something at about the same reading level as Lord of the Rings or at least no lower than Redwall. He has read: Everything by Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson, etc...) Tolkien: Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit All the Redwall books Some Alex Rider books All the Erigon books that are available. All the 39 Clues books. All
  11. If I said that I was only going to read 5 books to my children what would you suggest? I would love your Top 5 Suggestions (other than The Bible, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Lord of the Rings Series). Edited to add...I have a 6th, 4th, and 2nd grader, if that matters.
  12. What are yours? Getting ready for Christmas and looking for books that are beautiful as well as great reads. TIA
  13. I have an 18 yo who loves to read....ugh. The world of fiction and finding clean authors. I wish there was a board that was like Amazon--full of reviews that give you the feel for an author/book--but with the added twist of a rating system like G, PG, R etc. It seems many avid readers are pretty liberal in what they'll ingest and they just don't mention skin and language in their reviews. I want to find sci fi and sci fantasy for my teens and don't want to have to pre-read everything. I don't have the time and I hate those genres. That rant out....do you have some authors you can reco
  14. That's yours, not your kids'. I do get to books throughout the year, not many, a few. But, this will be the first year in...3? 4? years that I have not been in school, obligated to read textbooks. I'll entertain any ideas. So far, I'll be reading How to read a book Queen bees and wanna bees Misdiagnosis and dual diagnosis of gifted children and adults The well-adjusted child The five love languages Hold on to your kids Helping children with specific learning disabilities Stepping heavenward (I read this every year) The hidden art of homemaking (another book
  15. Are there any book lists out there that list books by time period as well as age/grade level? I want to use living books and historical novels for history, but it is becoming so frustrating trying to find the right books. Also, we are not Christian and prefer not to use Christian materials. I have looked at All Through the Ages by Miller, but in reading over her website, she seems very religious, so I'm not sure if the books she chose to include in All Through the Ages would reflect that. Are there any other lists I could consult?
  16. We are looking for some great summer reading books that do not fall into the history rotation. What fun books have your children read? My boys are going into 4th and 7th grade. Thanks, Dorothy
