  1. Wow. I still don't regret our decision not to circ. Anyway, I don't remember who said something about whooping cough and vax, but I am quite sure that almost all the kids/adults who got this whooping cough going around were vaccinated. Just because you are vaccinated, does not mean you won't catch/pass on/ expose/be exposed to, those illnesses again. It is not magic. Just like being circ. does not mean you WON'T catch AIDs, STDs, have urinary problems etc, or not being circ. means you will. Life, it's full of surprises!
  2. We have a fenced in yard, our neighbors on either side don't...but they are covered in scraggly wooded stuff. It does not seem to stop people from walking down our driveway, and going through these trees, brambles etc, to then go through someone else's property to get to the next street. Why not just walk down the right street? Our street is one block long. They also likely get scratches and step in dog poop, not to mention me explaining that they're trespassing. Oh well. Some people don't get it.
  3. I had to pick other, as while my husband is totally on board with the idea of homeschooling, he sort of thinks I do a crappy job of it. :tongue_smilie: He also occasionally helps, occasionally b*tches, occasionally undermines me, occasionally is supportive.... I would say he lets me do what I want, but that isn't really true either. I do many things in our HS to appease him, which I think sometimes screws up the flow and dynamic we would have w/o him being weird. The plus side is that he keeps me from being a total flake, lol. I know so many people whose husbands take zero interest in what they're doing, they just are like "Ok, I trust that you're doing the right thing," which I sort of envy, and think is total BS at the same time.
  4. This sounds sort of silly, but you could have your son carry around a damp washcloth that he can grab the cat with when it does this sort of thing. A modification of the squirt bottle. It could then evolve into a dry washcloth, then no washcloth. It will eventually grow out of the rambunctious phase. :) Also, you could consider having the cat declawed... while not ideal, and cruel, it is better than being euthanized, not finding a new home, causing harm to your kids.
  5. Not to rub it in, but we have 5 baby fig trees that we're now nursing. They grew from trimmed branches in our compost pile. If they are that determined to live, we'll help 'em! Before you know it, we will have a boutique market on Cincinnati figs. Seriously. If they could be relied upon I woul dtotally sell them at the farmers market, but it is almost impossible to tell when they are going to pop. Then they won't stop, for a few weeks , then...they're done for the year. It could be a lucrative few weeks if I knew when they were going to go crazy. BTW, if I trusted the PO, I would totally mail them out to you all. I think it would take too long. ;)
  6. To answer all of you....without quoting.... No, they are not really able to grow in the area. My husband builds houses for them each year. These trees are from cuttings from established trees that my FIL grew himself from cuttings from trees in the Appenine mountains in Tuscany. So they are directly from Italy, albeit cloned, grown, however you want to classify it. ;) I have no idea what kind they are. They turn slightly golden brown, and are totally voluptuous. There are only so many you can eat when they are fresh. Really, I didn't think it was possible but it is! :D I am totally making that recipe it sounds awesome! SO what is the fig preserve recipe? Please, tell me!
  7. We have two fig trees that are just going crazy this year. Our first batch were gigantic, and now.... the second batch is absolutely prolific. We easily have 100 fresh figs in our fridge. There are just as many that will ripen in the next week or so. So does anyone have some great fig recipes? I can only give so many away to neighbors...;)
  8. Well, our family would've had a blast in a museum like that. :D And as far as the band, I would've just said it was a band name, not even explain it further unless you had to.
  9. Not that anyone cares, but my French teacher in high school was from Haiti. He was asesome. He was also body-buider. He was very nice to me as he passed me in French II, as he thought it was too cruel to make me take it again. :D
  10. Everyone I know who is in Davidson is absolutely thrilled with it, just for the forums alone. However, I don't know anyone who has joined at the high school level, so take it with a grain of salt. I say, go for it. The worst that can happen is that you find it doesn't matter for you.
  11. OK, this stood out a bit to me. You don't really "work in this field." You are actually ineligible if you work in certain fields at all (again, depending on the study). They don't want to question people who do this for a living, they want normal people who have very little to do with whatever they are trying to figure out. OR they want the exact person their target audience/consumer might be. Pros: great per hour rate Cons: you have no control over what you qualify for, you have to fit into their schedule, you need to sign all sorts of paperwork
  12. It is not possible to make it PT work. You are not in control of who or what the marketing firm or client is looking for. Some months, I might be on several panels for different things, and different focus groups (taste test, take home product, online questionaire, discusion group, etc etc) for many different types of products. Then nothing for a while. There is no consistency to it, and depending on each company's rules, you might be able to only do one in 6 months or only not something pertaining to a certain type of product within whatever time period the client wants. I live in a town with a MAJOR company, so there are around 6 of these companies...generally you fill out an online or phone "screener" and then depending on what the paramenters of the study are, you either get into the hopper of not. Sometimes, they have trouble filling a study and will call back with a new set of questions (usually the client wanted something too specific, and they don't get enough people...so they change it a bit). It is a great (and sort of fun) way to make som eextra $$ but you cannot rely on it as steady. Usually I make between $200-400 per year, per company. Nothing to sneeze at, but not enough to do much more than fill the gas tank. :D I think they usually run between $35-125, but many test are much more. I never get on those ones, for some reason.
  13. I am predominantly visual. If I see a picture of something, or watch how something is done, I get it immediately...but if it is written down, I have to re-translate it into a visual...or else I might as well be a dog looking at an encyclopedia. This is one of the reasons I dislike some curricula. Too many words, not enough pictures.:D I think it is also way I skim so many posts...too many words in a row wakes me crabby. I can also remember exactly where on a page something was I read, and how deep. I think a lot of hoarders have this sort of visual/spatial memory. They can think/remember deep into stacks and piles of things. I'm not a hoarder, but the child of hoarders, so I see a similar ability to think this way. I have very good auditory and kinesthetic tendencies as well, but visual is my #1. BTW, I think most people have degrees of each, depending on the situation, but one dominant. Why I never buy into the whole "Learning styles" movement.
  14. I voted for Ben, just because of that group it's the one I prefer. However, I think "Ava, Harrison, and Cooper" sounds like it would be a good set. But I hate Cooper. And it easily rhymes with things. I think you should have both your lists handy, including ones you don't agree on, and see which one suits him when he comes out. One might make perfect sense, even if it's on another's list. Good luck! HAve a great baby!:D
  15. He was a nice addition to Thor and The Avengers. :D Really, you do not need to say more. Thank goodness my husband and both kids think he's awesome. ;)
  16. I really liked it too. I thought it would be something completely different, and am glad that it isn't what it appeared it would be.
  17. Bobbing for raw pig's feet? Wow. That's classic.
  18. Great. I had never thought this, and from now on I will always say it in my head and think of you. ;) I had a good one, but I forgot it. :tongue_smilie:
  19. What exactly are you reffering to? I could answer for my specific city and generally for my state.... This would be a state by state issue, not federal...so there isn't one answer to each of these questions. I will answer what I know for MY area.
