Chris in VA
Where can I find at the knee length or slightly below (even better) Spring floral skirts for dd8? I've looked at Walmart, Land's End, Hanna's, Gap, Gymboree--no go. I'm looking for something of a nice cotton she can throw on and go out in. No skorts, because they are always too short! Tiered is ok. Just can't find anything!! Slightly swishy is good--Anyone>? (Can't sew.)
KarenNC
I have my best luck at consignment sales or thrift stores.
helena
I just bought one at Naartjie. Also Boden has a cute longer skirt.

Pam "SFSOM" in TN
Chris, I just bought dd a swishy tiered skirt (not a skort) from Land's End. Look again. :-) And here it is: http://www.landsend.com/pp/TieredSkirt~194401_1187.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::BRO&CM_MERCH=IDX_00004_0000000010_0000000420&origin=index
KarenNC
And here it is: http://www.landsend.com/pp/TieredSkirt~194401_1187.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::BRO&CM_MERCH=IDX_00004_0000000010_0000000420&origin=index The description says above knee length on it, still, though. It's a shame, Walmart had some nice ones a year or so ago. For skirts, I also prefer a somewhat below the knee length for my daughter (though she does wear skorts or shorts that are shorter). They do show a longer denim skirt (not swishy-looking, though) http://www.landsend.com/pp/LongStretchCorduroySkirt~178691_-1.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::CLN&CM_MERCH=IDX_00004__0000000420&origin=index Old Navy's website says they have some that hit at the knee, on sale for $8 http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=6066. The same page shows an ankle length denim and a twill, but those are straight, so they'd have to have a slit---wouldn't work as play clothes for my 8 yo, I know. They are also online only. The Gap website has two that look like possibles http://www.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=6284, but they don't actually give the length, so it's impossible to be sure. Did they have these in the store? Limited Too (now called Justice for Girls) shows a knee length peasant skirt http://www.shopjustice.com/girl-clothes/bottoms/skirts-skorts?page=all check at Kohls if there's one in your area http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/kids/girls716/skirtsscooters/skirts.jsp?bmForm=guided_nav_search&SubcatFolderID=2534374752620223 A possible option---we just got the Lands' End catalog for the spring and it looks like they are showing a look that includes the shorter skirts/skorts over footless capri-style leggings. I've seen that in other places as well. Don't know if that would work for you or not. Edited February 24, 2009 by KarenNC
Chris in VA
The peasant skirt is cute, as is the Hannah, but they are a little out of my price range--about what I'm looking for style-wise, tho. I think the leggings are too hot for the summer--and I don't like the short skirts with them, sorry! lol This one was way cute--urgghh--too much tho! KatieJ
I am thinking if you knew how to sew these are easy to sew. I just made one for my 2 yr old grandaughter. Fabric stores have lists of folks who sew.. Etsy.com has some skirts..I found them when I was looking for ideas on how to do mine. I had bought a sweatshirt and cut it open and sewed fabric strips down the front, across the bottom and around the sleeve ( cuff area). Then I made a multi tiered skirt with those same fabrics. It is soo cute! This is the skirt pattern I used for inspiration. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=sr_gallery_16&listing_id=16306095 This is the jacket pattern I used. (Yes, I bought the book.) http://www.nancysnotions.com/product/sewing+with+nancy/books/sweatshirt+makeovers+for+kids+book.do

Yeah, I'm not wild about the leggings option either and most new stuff is out of our price range as well. :) The season for consignment sales is upon us though (the first one in our area is this Saturday), so you may want to check your local listings (I frequently find them listed in the garage sales section of the classifieds) to see if any local churches or kids' groups are having sales. I would take a measuring tape and know the minimum length you are looking for so that you can measure the clothes. Most don't have dressing rooms and the fuller skirts can be a bit deceptive, especially if it is that right at the knee length.
Chris in VA
Thanks Karen--good ideas as usual. Thanks everyone else, too--the Old Navy skirts were cute--but we needed a medium. Their sizes seem to run a little big, on the chart. She's halfway between an 8 and a 10--skinny waist but tallish-- Thanks for the links, everyone. That makes it even harder to find something the right length, then, especially if she has a lot of that length in the leg. Definitely take a tape measure! Melinda in VT
Have you seen this one? Maybe more than you want to pay for a play skirt, but it says it's designed to be below the knee.
Chris in VA
That's cute, Melinda. I appreciate you shopping for me! lol I'll run it by dd when she gets home. It may be too "fussy" (her word) for her.

I don't think my 9yo would wear it. It has pink. And flowers. And a bow. The horror!
Starr
I envy your need to consider spring skirts and it's not even May.
orangearrow
If you sew - this is an easy-peasy skirt to sew (you pick your whatever length you need it to be): http://www.oliverands.com/patterns/Oliver+SLazyDaysSkirt.pdf
Karen in CO
http://www.bodenusa.com/en-us/Girls-Skirts/32253/Girls-Petticoat-Skirt.html I like the mini boden skirts for girls. I buy them a bit big and they they wear them for a two years or more. They love them and they wear well. Even after two years, the skirts are in great shape to pass down. They have denim and cord. in the fall, cotton in the spring and a usually a silk in the summer.
