Bummer!  I'm not on FB.  I wish it wasn't the go-to place for groups.

Me too!! I’m not really on it either, I have no friends, use maiden name, unsearchable, and only use for homeschool.. especially the files for curriculum I use.

not it.. !  This was fairly recently— she posted her pdf here.  Can anyone find it?? I’m wondering if she had the other volumes.  It is So so good!

I have it as well.

The email associated with it should be able to be seen if you right click on the pdf you saved.  I don't know if her username was the same, but the pdf I have (with the great pictures and everything in the workbook pages as a second file) was EmBrown.

We did BFSU level I in kindergarten (not that I recommend that for kids generally--mine had started asking science questions as soon as he could talk, so having the structure of the book to work from was partly self-defense on my part) and then level II across 4th & 5th.

For the first book, I did this lesson order (sorry about the weird quotation marks), typically 1 week per topic:

  1. "D-3, Draw/read maps"
  2. "D-3A, N/S/E/W"
  3. "D-4, Land forms & Biomes
  4. "A/B-1,  Categories"
  5. "B-2, Living/ Nonliving"
  6. "B-3, Plants/Animals & online tree of life"
  7. "B-4A, Same/Different"
  8. "B-4B, Species"
  9. Review.
  10. "A-2, Solid/ Liquid/ Gas chart & water activity"
  11. "A-3, Air (library book ""Air is All Around You"")"
  12. "A-4, Particles/ Matter"
  13. "C-1, Energy makes things go."
  14. "A-5, Distinguishing materials"
  15. "A-5A, Magnets (also in Science is Simple; pins)"
  16. Finish/review.
  17. "D-1, Gravity"
  18. "D-2, Day/Night"
  19. "D-5, Earth’s turning"
  20. "D-6, Seasons"
  21. Finish/review.
  22. "A-6, Air Pressure"
  23. "A-7, Air: a mixture
  24. "A-8, Evaporation & condensation"
  25. "C-2, Sound/ vibrations (also in Science is Simple)"
  26. "C-3, Kinetic energy"
  27. "C-4, Matter vs. Energy"
  28. "B-4, Life Cycles"
  29. "B-5, Food chains"
  30. "B-10, Plant structure"
  31. "B-11, Seeds"
  32. "B-12, Plants, Soil, Water"
  33. Finish/review.

For the next level, typically 2 weeks per topic:

  1. D12 and D9: cabbage Earth and seasons (review)
  2. A11 particle motion
  3. A12 particle motion & temperature
  4. A13 particles, heat, and pressure
  5. A14 elements and compounds
  6. A15 intro to density
  7. A16 floating ships
  8. A17 heat, volume, density
  9. A18 convection
  10. D10 water cycle
  11. D13 climate
  12. D11 tectonics
  13. B13 cells
  14. B14 cell division
  15. B15 more cells
  16. B19 microscopic org. Req. Robbins' Louis Pasteur.
  17. B16 fungi/ bacteria
  18. B17 fungi/ bacteria II
  19. B18 fungi/ bacteria III

And then continuing level II the following year as well, still at about 2 weeks per topic, interleaving BFSU with a book called Teaching Science Process Skills:

  1. TSPS Observing activities
  2. C8 flight
  3. TSPS Inferring
  4. C9 balance
  5. TSPS Inferring
  6. TSPS - begin variables
  7. Review/ Catch up
  8. C10 movement, energy, momentum
  9. more TSPS variables and BFSU C11 mechanics, levers
  10. Review/ Catch up
  11. C12 more simple machines
  12. TSPS - Predicting
  13. C13 electricity
  14. C13A more electricity
  15. C14 still more electricity
  16. C15 light and vision
  17. lenses, mirrors, prisms
  18. TSPS - Hypothesizing
  19. TSPS - Data
  20. TSPS - Investigating

After this, my child was ready for Trefil and Hazen's The Sciences: An Integrated Approach.

I'm doing it in Kindergarten. I actually think it's one of the better ones for starting in Kindergarten because the hands-on/experiments part is more age appropriate. Since you can discuss the actual concept that the experiment covers as opposed to making Obleck or a baking soda volcano.

@Emery Thank you so much for these. I bought BFSU and erroneously bought ebook instead of actual book. (I erroneously thought I could print off the parts that I wanted thus saving shelf space but alas the ebook can't be printed.) So even just your front pages are godsend to me. The notebook pages are just gold.

@Emery This is absolutely amazing!  I gave up on using BFSU for my older kids because I just didn't have the time to get it organized.  I think I'll give it another go with my younger two when they reach kindergarten thanks to you!

Do you plan to repost the links for Volume 2 in the future?  If those become available, I may even try it with my older kids again.

Emery,

I cannot thank you enough for this! It has saved my dumpster fire of a science life! I have to ask, if you plan to make the same type of plans for level 3?

Thanks again!

Emery hasn't been on the boards since last September, so if you want to discuss BFSU, you're probably better off starting a new thread.
