Well-trained bodies - July

Well, my husband's plans for last night changed, and gaming was cancelled. Then I worked late and just couldn't muster the mental energy to work on something new. So, instead of the foot stretching exercises, I just went for another walk (about 1.75k). All told, I managed to break 10,000 steps for the first time since the Day of the Motorcycle.

Started today with a longer walk than I've been able to do, a little over 3k, followed by the usual floor-based strength and stretching.

I drove my own car (manual transmission) to take the new cat to his appointment with the eye specialist, and my husband did note when I got home that I'm limping a little more than I have for the last couple of days, but the foot still feels much better than it did earlier in the week.

If we don't come up with anything more interesting or amusing to do after work, I may go do some errands at the shopping center. If so, assuming my foot doesn't rebel before then, I'll park once and walk from store to store, which should get me a decent number of additional steps. Then we'll see if I'm up to anything more today.

I went for an epic 2 hr bike ride this afternoon from downtown back home again. Dh and I dropped off ds16 and his friend downtown at a museum, and I biked home - stopping for ice cream along the way. The flavour was Chocolate and Marmalade - it was delicious! There were a ton of people downtown for the Canada Day festivities already at noon.

Dh and I will be playing mixed doubles tennis this evening, then having friends over for refrestments and perhaps fire works (if I have any left over from last year).

I had an emotional dip yesterday afternoon, and by the time I came out of it enough to think about what to do with the evening, the weather had turned ugly. So, I decided to see how my foot/ankle did with the stationary bike. It felt fine, and I stayed on (at a very low resistance) for about 35 minutes.

My usual Saturday morning yoga at the lake was cancelled because the instructor needs another week to recover from covid, so I just did the usual routine: walked about 3.25k, did about 10 minutes of seated cardio, followed by 20 minutes of upper body workout video.

@Jenny in Florida sounds like your foot is healing. That stinks yoga was cancelled 😞

@wintermom I can tell your energy and mood are improved. I'm glad to see that for you.

-----------------------------------------

Yesterday was a sucky one. By the afternoon I could do some walking with minimal pain so I did some walking in place inside. The pain is much improved today. Just a bit when I'm doing nothing. Any type of reaching, bending over, twisting, or rolling over isn't good (sleeping is rough because of that--- however I could sleep in more positions last night and the pain doesn't last as long when I do switch positions). I cannot do the exercises that she told me to do without pain.

I'm not certain PT hasn't made this worse as I never had pain like this before.

From what I have observed--- I need to make sure I do not have days with lots of sitting-- this aggravates whatever is going on--- I need to put activity reminders on my watch so I get up and walk at regular intervals (not just getting in steps but making sure less time sitting). Yesterday I couldn't most of the day because of the pain but usually walking doesn't hurt.

I'm continuing with bodyweight only for lower body strength work and going to modify my schedule. The program I started is 2 lower, 1 upper and 1 full body strength day. I'm going to just do 1 upper, 1 lower, and 1 full body (when I'm up to it-- if things continue to improve I'm hoping for Monday but am playing it by ear).

I asked the PT specifically if she could see any weakness or imbalances in my training-- she has said she doesn't see any but I will be asking her to look at this again. She thinks the back is just from hurting my hip and compensating in a way that bothers the back but I want to make sure there isn't some area of strength I'm missing that can help alleviate the issue. I feel my core is relatively strong as I spent many, many months addressing DR and then years since then building it up but it could always be stronger. Or maybe imbalances in the hips vs glute which is very common.

Today I went to the walking track. I did approx 45 min. The biggest con was that despite going to the bathroom before I got there, I had the urge to go again and no where to go. I just walked til the post office opened (I got there too late Friday). I wasn't prepared for the bugs. Maybe next time I can apply something. It was hot, but bearable. My iphone health app says 4500 steps today. I biked 35 on the stationary bike and that says 302 cal burned (I don't wear the phone when I bike). I seldom eat pizza anymore mostly due to the lactose sensitivity but also because I'm trying to eat better. My gift card we used this weekend was for a pizza place so I did have some this weekend and I feel like I'm still trying to reverse some of my backslide this week. I have to remember the picture of progress is not a straight line. The forecast says stormy all weekend so I'm glad I got that walk in.

Did I tell you guys I did the blood pressure machine and had no luck? I realized later that I didn't have my palm up so maybe that's why. My friend joked that I'm a vampire (no pulse).

@Soror I got a few back exercises when I did PT. I don't know if they would be applicable to your situation, though. If you google the name, it might not match what I did exactly but they called one Superman and I had to lie on my stomach, face on a pillow, arms parallel to body and just lift up top half of body several times. Another one is you stand by a wall and put a giant yoga ball in the small of your back and kinda roll your body into the ball. It's really hard to explain. There might be YouTube videos. I also had to lay down for like 5 min or something propping myself up on my forearms, then set the timer again and just lie on my stomach flat for the same number of min.

@Soror I hope your hip/back issues improve with the PT. Glad you have some support there.

Tennis last night was really fun, and this morning was great as well. I took the puppy for another kayak paddle this afternoon followed by a walk at the dog trails. I tried him out off-leash for a little, and he was amazing! I'll definitely be going back to those trails frequently, as the forest and wildflower meadows are lovely.

Did a little shopping expedition yesterday afternoon, which garnered me some steps. Then I worked on a project for the house that involved walking to and from quite a bit. All told, I was well over 10,000 steps by dinner time. (I also napped twice yesterday, which is virtually unheard of for me unless I'm sick.)

Today is a rest day, so just walking. I walked about 3.4k and came home feeling really hot and queasy. It's not "that warm" (by Florida standards), but it's humid and I hadn't eaten anything since a handful of cookies early afternoon yesterday, so I didn't tolerate it well.

Hoping to finish up that house project today. The Summer Splash has a 5K badge challenge this weekend. I'm not sure I want to push my foot for that one. Walking the longer distance at speed might be a bad idea. I'm thinking I might do it on the stationary bike, today if I have energy after project-ing or maybe tomorrow.

I played ladies doubles tennis for 2 hours this morning. It was warm and lovely, and not nearly as hot and humid as last weekend. That's 3 days in a row of tennis + lots of additional activities, so I'm resting this afternoon. I'll play an hour of mixed doubles this evening. Hopefully I'll be well rested and energized by then.

Sun is usually a rest day, but today I did 30 min on the bike and some weight training during a movie. Afterwards I did a 15 min HIIT with modifications. the only thing I don't love about my new exercise mat is when I put my hands down for push ups they slide a little. As if the mat is greasy.

I got ahold of my bug spray but I would like to eventually order the bug repellent stickers. I was going to go to the walking track and listen to something on my phone, but the battery was almost dead and then it got too dark. If I get up in time, I want to try to meet up with the Pickleball players tomorrow in another town. They claim the courts will be open even though it's a holiday (you normally have to pay a fee to use that place, so I don't get how the place could be accessible).

Happy 4th of July to my American training buddies! Hope you have a great day!

I'm playing tennis for 2 hours late this afternoon. I'll be resting up the body some more before then. 😉  It's a lovely day, though, and not too hot, so I may take the puppy for a walk at the dog park for lunch.

So the chart they post on Facebook says beginners meet Mondays 8-11am. I drove out here and these people said the holiday makes the chart void — a beginner group wasn’t there so basically I wasn’t welcome. The leader knew I was coming as we exchanged a few messages but didn’t bother to tell me this? I thought it was quite rude/disappointing. They asked if I had a paddle and I said no — I was told there are some —- they said the building is closed today (I wasn’t referring to the building; I was referring to an active member that told me he brings extras). A guy pipped up he had an extra paddle but I was basically dismissed. I told them I couldn’t come back tomorrow morning as they suggested because I live so far and work during the week. I said maybe I’ll come out one night.

Sigh. I don’t know if I’ll bother returning.

I cheated a bit and did the 5k mini-challenge on the stationary bike. (Not really "cheating," since biking is one of the included activities, but it is so much faster and feels so much easier than walking a comparable distance that I always feel a little naughty about including it.) It was a good reminder that, now that we're getting in summer, the bike is always available as an alternative when the weather isn't conducive to walking.

Walked just a little over 3k this morning. I was hoping to keep working up towards my previous 4k usual, but ran out of time before my husband and I planned to head out for the local 4th of July parade.

Walked around downtown a little bit after the parade, which has me at about 7,300 steps for the day. Weather permitting, we plan to go to the fireworks tonight, which will likely involve some more walking between the park and wherever we manage to park the car.

@Jenny in Florida yeah I like the bike to get more calories burned faster but I think walking works out more of the body with the weight of our bodies. No shame though lol

so apparently in addition to today being a holiday, they updated the schedule and beginners don’t even meet on Mondays anymore. I took a photo of the one they had posted at the court.

It's a Monday so I decided to try the treadmill (it's here with me in the master bedroom). I purposely did a slower pace and I was going to go just 20 minutes but did 25 since I was reading and wanted to finish the chapter. Heart rate stayed ok I think--I never look at it normally but I think normal resting for me is like 68 and this put me in the 90's. Feeling pretty good but still draining. I don't think I'll waste a test today as it would probably turn positive eventually. Dh had to use one yesterday to go to church so we're down to 2 in the house. I ordered a box from Amazon which will be here tomorrow and then 8 government freebies but I don't know how long it will take for those to come. So it's another day in isolation for me. May try to clean up the computer files a bit. Read a bit. Watch some Netflix. I have an online data literacy course I could start.

Ugh 😩 I'd be upset too. Why in the world didn't they tell you when you messaged? Was the lady you messaged there? Maybe things have changed? I talked to the local club here but last week they didn't have it at the same times or days and it didn't work for my schedule.

I did my full body workout from Friday. I modified as needed. Right now I mostly just feel it when rolling over, leaning back and forward but it hurts much less and it isn't spasming like it was.

Today we're going to the city. I wanted to do an activity for my birthday but dh was busy and I was really down. We were going to do a hike but it is stupid hot so we're going for some indoor activities. I really want to do the obstacle course or rock climbing gym but I know that would be pushing my luck.

Nine mile walk today - I'm on leave from work for two weeks. It was another section of the cross-county trail. It wasn't a very beautiful walk but the wildflowers are blooming. Photos of wild poppies, oxeye daisies, hogweed,  meadowsweet and fireweed/bombweed. Oh and a ruined cottage with a rose still flourishing in the garden.

The group admin and I spoke on the main page and she never said anything about what level players would be there. I suppose I should have said, “I’m a beginner. Are any beginners coming?” but since she’s the admin I felt she should have been more clear. When she told me to look at the posted schedule (it was her I met in person) and that it’s the most current I took a pic. Later I saw where there was a discrepancy and I posted the newest chart on the FB group under the original chart post today. They should have done that. She was the only woman there and I remember feeling awkward approaching a bunch of grown men. They were all older than me. I don’t know who shows up to the Tues night gatherings. But I can’t go this week because I spread out my drives to the city ($$$).

Sorry your first experience trying to join this group didn't work out. That's a shame that the schedule changed. If you find a day and time that is specific for beginners (and perhaps ladies) I'd encourage you to try again. It is a pretty fun game, and a nice way to meet new people. Do they offer any lessons or 'learn to play' sessions? These are the very best ways to learn about the rules, try out the serve and different strokes among a group of other new comers to the game.

Our tennis club that has organized doubles play during weekdays will have different people come on holidays, too. Some of the regular people go out of town and some work and can only make it in the morning on holidays.

@Laura Corin Lovely photos! Thanks for sharing. Enjoy your time off work!

@Jenny in Florida I'd never consider cycling as cheating. It's a physical challenge in its own right. Do you clip your feet in the peddles so your legs both push and pull? This really increases the work-out, I find. You could always double the mileage, though, as 5km is really short on a bike.

@Soror Glad the back pain is a little better, and you're able to stay active without pain. Enjoy your special day in the city!

@Ali in OR Hope you're feeling 100% again very soon. Sounds like you're doing pretty well to have the energy for a brisk walk for that long!

I took the puppy to the dog park and we walked the trails for about 45 min. It was lovely, as there are shady forest areas and sunny meadows with lovely wildflowers. It was almost as pretty as the fields @Laura Corin was walking in. 😉

I'm playing more doubles tennis later this afternoon for 2 hours. My body is recovering alright from the weekend, so I should survive it.

I was specifically going today because the original chart said Monday was for beginners lol. Along with one week night. They changed the chart so now it's Tuesday mornings for beginners. I had the chart printed and hanging on my fridge. They apparently never updated the chart on the facebook group, only on the bulletin board at the actual court. This is why I was so annoyed, along with it being a holiday and all rules going out the window.

I've played a couple times. My dad goes several days a week and I've joined him. Once was with other people he plays with and another time with just family. I hate keeping score, but as far as making contact with the ball I did fine. He plays a few hours away from me.

With the typical age group of the people I see play pickleball, I'm not surprised that they are more the paper-version of schedules kind of people. Not to put down anyone, but I don't really like checking facebook for schedules, either. 😉

I'm totally with you on the scoring system! It's just weird. Glad you have some prior experience with the game, and can simple join in on a game. Hope you have a great time playing in the future!

Just finished showering after my doubles tennis session of another 2 hrs. I played with a few new ladies, and it was very fun! I'm really enjoying this new tennis club. That makes 5 straight days in a row for 2hr of doubles tennis. Fortunately I have a day off tomorrow or my body would definitely protest. 😅

@wintermom I'm so glad you're having a good time with the new tennis club.
@Soror back spasms are awful. Do you need to ask for medication or is it fleeting/bearable?
@Ali in OR let me get this straight... you have covid and are still crushing it lol
@Laura Corin nine miles sounds like a long walk to me. Whoa.

I do believe I will try to meet up with the group during a beginner slot on a Tuesday night, but why did they tell me to come back Tuesday MORNING when the sheet says "intermediate and up." These people lol. I think I'm best sticking with the beginner group for now. I just know I won't be going back anytime soon because of the cost of gas and my work schedule. Like, I'd have to bring a change of clothes and go straight from work or dress down and maybe work from a nearby library and then what, leave my laptop in the car a couple hours? I dunno if that's a bad idea because of the heat. I have the kids next week so the soonest I'd meet with the Pickleball group would be July 19.

I'm glad you got up the courage to try going again some day.

The spasms aren't too bad right now and have nearly disappeared. I tried muscle relaxer on the worst night but it didn't help with pain/spasms/nothing except make me sleepy and feel icky all the next day. I tried a small pain pill the following night and that helped some but I only want to use that when really miserable.

@wintermom you've certainly got your energy back

@Laura Corin Enjoy your time off. That is a nice long walk. I love wildflowers.

@Jenny in Florida I think it is smart that you "cheated" on the 5k. You are still recovering after all.

We had a nice time in the city. We did an indoor ropes course, mini golf, carousel, maze, and ferris wheel. So, just light activity but something different than usual. My back is doing ok. I can still feel it when doing certain moves but it is almost as good as it was last week before it got bad- which was mostly just hurting some with rolling over.

Today is HIIT (modified as needed).

If there is pickleball when I take the girls in for TKD I'm going to check it out.

We ended up walking a total of about 1.5k last night between where we parked and the fireworks location. The weather cooperated, and it was a nice evening . . . until I tried to stand up from the blanket and needed my husband's help because my legs were too weak to do it on my own. Kind of messed with my mood.

Walked 3.6k this morning, so making progress towards resuming the daily 4k. Followed that with a slightly abbreviated (based on both time before work and energy) floor-based strength and stretching session. Both the dog and the new cat decided to hang around and "help."

No other interesting plans for today. I'd really love to make my 15,000 steps for what would be the first time since the motorcycle incident, but we'll see.

Tested positive again last night, but it took a lot longer and the line is fainter. I feel myself shifting from "I'm sick--not going to do much" to "I'm feeling mostly well so I'm going to do stuff, but still take breaks." A full 30 min on the treadmill this morning--first time I've closed the exercise ring in awhile. I did go at yesterday's slower pace, but it's still fast enough for my watch to count it as exercise.

If all the able-bodied folks leave the house today I'll do a little picking up and vacuuming. Dh will get dd up and ready and I'll tend to her several times through the day. Might make a real dinner but having trouble thinking of anything that's mostly hands-off. I could do chili--I think there's some in the freezer.

Can your dh make dinner? Or can you order out? Take it easy.

He did a pretty good job last night and Sunday night, but the other nights he has forgotten to make anything and he's getting over-stressed from doing 3 days of all of dd's care and me doing nothing. And chili from the freezer is pretty easy--just need to get it thawing and then heat it up!

I need to focus more on diet. I didn't realize the food to exercise importance ratio was basically 80/20 in weight loss. I did better food-wise today.

Yes. It's really hard to lose weight mainly by exercise - the exercise equivalent time of most snack foods, for example, can start to overwhelm your day.

Exercise has its own benefits in health, well-being,  strength, etc, though, especially as we get older.

Most of my current snacks are 130 cal a serving and even that’s annoying. Not including fruit and veggies but things like crackers.

Yes, what Laura said. It is hard to out exercise a bad diet. However, exercise does have a lot of benefits. And if you look at the registry of people who have lost weight and maintained that loss 90% exercise an average of an hour a day--- walking being the most common exercise. Personally, I find if I exercise too strenuously I find it more difficult to loss weight as it increases my appetite. Also, good habits beget other good habits and small changes add up.

He did a pretty good job last night and Sunday night, but the other nights he has forgotten to make anything and he's getting over-stressed from doing 3 days of all of dd's care and me doing nothing. And chili from the freezer is pretty easy--just need to get it thawing and then heat it up!

I'm glad you are inching better. It's wonderful there is some chili in the freezer so you can both neither of you have to worry about cooking.

Yay for a rainy day when I needed to rest my body! I'll do my best to get out for a walk at some point today. Or perhaps I'll do something extra special for my body and do some yoga-like stretches and stuff. 😉

LOL did you do anything special for your body 🙂

Summer Splash Challenge: 188.0 of 600K
Walking Streak: 64 days

I can see why that would dampen your mood although you are making wonderful progress in your injury recovery. I did a yoga class with older ladies once and one of the things we worked on was standing from the floor. It is not uncommon for this to be difficult as we age. If this difficulty is not related to your injury maybe it is a skill to practice during your strength work?

I'm up in the night--- stress and hormones.

I noticed..... no pain. No pain when I roll over or sit up. First time since coming back from vaca. It is so weird that it was the worst ever last week and then nothing today (so far-- although it is usually worse in the am). I don't understand it. My hip hasn't bothered me lately either. I still have been modifying my workouts. I want to see what happens when I start adding back weight.

PT today maybe she will have a clue.

am: lower body (again body weight--- except maybe a couple of exercises)

@Soror I'm sorry about the stress and sleeplessness.

We are renting a cottage in the Peak District for a week. Hoping for walking, eating, visiting and maybe cycling.

Standing from the floor - in my case without using my hands or kneeling - is something I aim to do every day at the end of my yoga practice,  as a test.

I feel like I have to do all my exercise at once rather than some in the morning, some at night, because I need a shower afterwards. I’d rather not shower twice a day.

I’m going to try to keep the bad food out of the house. The other day I ate the last pancake after the kids left town. Later I was telling myself you could have just froze it. All I was thinking was don’t waste food.

I need to make a list of exercises and get in the habit of doing certain ones daily and others 3x a week. The daily ones are like stretching my leg against a door frame.

Do you all use a food scale? I haven’t bought one but eventually I will. I thought it was overkill but for certain things it may be useful plus when I bake again it could be useful if I make something not written using cups. No baking for a while though, too much temptation. I notice on MFP it will say how many oz of chicken and I’m just guessing.

Yes! I did 30 minutes of stretching and some gentle yoga. It felt really good. My body really needed the gentle movement and rest.

I also ate chocolate, which I consider special for my body. 😊

That is really exciting about feeling no pain!! I really hope this continues. Constant pain is so hard to deal with, especially when you're going through a lot of very challenging mental and emotional issues at the same time.

Oh, it's exacerbated by the injury, for sure, but the combination of those arthritic knees and the peripheral neuropathy (which can cause weakness in the affected limbs) has made this an issue for some time. Exercises to strengthen my legs and support the knees are part of my regular routine. However, it seems -- like everything else I'm doing -- not to be yielding a lot in the way of progress.
