teachermom2834
I know this could have done in one of the other vaccine threads but those are so busy I figured I start a new one and be more precise. My 20 yo ds lives in FL but I do not. He is a legal resident there having changed over his license etc. It appears be will be eligible April 5. (Though in my state they said April 5 and then the next day opened it up early). How does he go about this? He lives in St Petersburg right now but attended USF and is familiar with that part of Tampa and he works at Steinbrenner stadium in Tampa so he gets around that area. Where we are,in TN, we found it easier and faster to go directly through the Walmart pharmacy vs the health department. What is the deal in FL? ETA: of course he is 20 and takes care of himself. He can figure it out. He told me he is preregistered whatever that means. So I’m not trying to helicopter my adult kid. I just know we have benefited from info sharing on here and we are grown adults. I’m just wondering about any tips I could give him. CinV
Honestly, I would go through one of the grocery chains that are eligible to give it. In my area, that is Winn Dixie or Publix. They each have information on their websites for booking appointments. County health departments can be very hit or miss in regards to how organized they are.
teachermom2834
Just now, CinV said: Honestly, I would go through one of the grocery chains that are eligible to give it. frankincense
Here are some sources of vaccine registration/information when he's eligible: Publix vaccination https://www.publix.com/covid-vaccine/florida FL Covid testing/vaccination registration site https://www.patientportalfl.com/s/?language=en_US Walmart vaccination https://www.walmart.com/cp/1228302 Sams Club vaccination https://www.samsclub.com/pharmacy Winn Dixie vaccination https://www.winndixie.com/pharmacy/covid-vaccine Sarasota County vaccine registration https://member.everbridge.net/835908009984015/login
frankincense
First steps for vaccine information for Pinellas County residents (takes you through step by step); also points to some additional sources not mentioned in the links in my prior post: https://covid19.pinellascounty.org/vaccines/
Wildcat
Publix. Tell him to go to publix.com first thing Monday morning the week he is eligible (that's when Publix opens their slots for the week) and look in the upper right hand corner of the website for the COVID vaccine info. It will take him to a page where he selects his state (in this case, FL). I can't remember the exact sequence after that, but he will enter his zip (or the zip where he wants to get his shot), then he'll select a specific store. They will choose a day & time for him but he can change it if he needs/wants to. They automatically assign the date for the second shot (if not J&J), and the time will be the same time as his first shot. I think that can be changed, too, if needed. The day of his shot, he'll need to bring his FL license and insurance card, although they probably won't even ask for that. They do ask for the ID, though. At some point, he'll need to enter his name, addy, email, phone, etc, and he'll want to print out the confirmation sheet and take that with him, as well. He just goes to the pharmacy, checks in, and gets his shot. This is the route I would choose over one of the drive-up sites where he may have to wait in a long line. If he would prefer to look at his options in Tampa, he can go here: https://www.hillsboroughcounty.org/residents/public-safety/covid-19-vaccine Pinellas county has a similar website but it's a bit more confusing to me: https://covid19.pinellascounty.org/vaccines/ ETA: I crossposted with Frankencense. Her Publix link is the direct one that I didn't think to look up. LOL. As an aside, I've also heard that he can go into the Publix he wants to get his shot in and make an appointment for that week. The slots do fill up fast, though, so I suggest the "7:00am stalking the website" technique. 2nd Edit: Coming back to amend the above to say that Friday mornings at 7:00 is when Publix is now opening their portal to schedule vaccines for the following week. teachermom2834
And do these sites open to him when he is eligible? As in, he can’t schedule an appointment for when he is eligible before that date? (dh and I were able to schedule for the week when we would be eligible before we were technically eligible to receive it. But it seems most of the setups are such that you can’t even register until you are eligible) Edited March 25, 2021 by teachermom2834
teachermom2834
Thank you all for the great info! I knew people here would have it figured out and I’d have answers quickly. Thank you!

I suspect the others will be the same as well, since none of the sites I'm familiar with changed their eligibility info until Monday morning. Highly annoying. ETA: It seems that Publix in FL is now opening their website on Fridays at 7:00am for the next week's scheduling. stephanier.1765
I just got one today from Walmart. Picked a day and time and signed up online. It was super easy. They didn't even ask for any ID.
ktgrok
If he has a FEMA mass vaccination site near him that is where I did mine. Super easy. No appointment needed. They do thousands of shots a day. We found that going around 10:30 or 11am was the best time. Earlier and later there were lines.
purpleowl
DH and I are doing ours at Publix. Last Monday I picked up forms from our doctor's office saying we are medically vulnerable. It was a little before noon. I went on the Publix website and easily got appointments for both of us (there were multiple time slots available, even). I was surprised because I knew they had opened sign-ups that morning at 8 so I figured they'd be booked, but nope. I got my first dose last Thursday and DH got his last Friday. I seem to remember that for [s]Publixes[/s] [s]Publices[/s] Publix locations in my city at least, they were saying that week that if you registered on Monday or Friday you'd get Moderna, and if you registered on Wednesday you'd get J&J. For my Monday registration, my appointment choices were only that Thursday or Friday. 1
Wildcat
Coming back to add (and I'll edit my original post) that it seems that Publix (in FL, not sure about other states) now opens their online portal on Fridays at 7:00am for the next week appointments. Apparently, in our area, the JNJ just wasn't an option at all, but I have seen the same info that purpleowl posted above.
