Reefgazer
If anyone's student has taken this course( as an approved AP course) and/or taken the AP exam, can you tell me about the challenge level of this course? DD has taken 1 programming course and may take this next year, and I was wondering about it. Your thoughts?
Arcadia
Both my kids took the Edhesive version and did well (a 4 and a 5) for the AP Computer Science A exams in May 2017. Workload was light and my kids usually finish one week’s worth of work on Friday afternoon. DS11 had not done any line/text programming before that course and DS12 has done the AoPS python course before that. Both have done Scratch and Lego Mindstorm which is more block (drag and drop) programming. I think I wrote a long post in the Edhesive Computer Science thread. ETA: My kids won’t interested in the AP Computer Science Principles course/exam so we didn’t do that one. freesia
My son took Edhesive as well and got a 4. His two friends, who had had programming experience, took it and got 5. For him it was a medium load class. Some of the projects were challenging for him. He is not a natural programmer.
GoodGrief
My daughter took it as a senior with PA Homeschoolers. She had never had any comp sci before. She got an A in the class and a 5 on the exam. It was challenging but not overwhelming.
mirabillis
My son loved that class! He also took it through Edhesive last year in 9th grade. Very thorough, I thought. He got a 4, no previous programming experience. For him, it was about 1 hour a day or so. That includes videos and assignments. But he enjoyed it immensely. Mathy kid.
rbk mama
One DS used the old Teen Coder Java course (self study) in 8th and got a 5 - felt it was easy. The other DS used Edhesive in 9th and also got a 5, though he found Edhesive to be somewhat difficult to use - it seemed buggy, which was funny. Both used Scratch for a few years, but that's it as far as programming experience, though both are mathy kids. I think if a student enjoys programming they will find it easy.
Reefgazer
This is good to know. My DD is doing a robotics programming class and was thinking about this class for next year. My daughter took it as a senior with PA Homeschoolers. She had never had any comp sci before. She got an A in the class and a 5 on the exam. It was challenging but not overwhelming. GoodGrief
This is good to know. My DD is doing a robotics programming class and was thinking about this class for next year. She will likely be more than fine then. My daughter was completely inexperienced. It did trigger an interest in comp sci though! She did well enough in her first year of college comp sci that she has a job as a grader this year for a CS class.

Momto6inIN
In 9th grade DS did Teen Coder and self study with Barron's I think. Whatever Kathy in Richmond from these boards recommended :) He got a 5 and didn't find it difficult at all, but he has a mind that just works that way. Not sure my other DC would have fared as well using just that prep. Sent from my Z988 using Tapatalk

daijobu
I had my dd's take the Edhesive course in 8th grade because I heard it's one of the easier APs. They both got 5's. They had pretty solid python skills going in to the class, so really all they were learning was the Java-specific stuff, not programming per se.
Maryam
My ds took it last year in 10th grade and got a 4. He enjoyed it and spent max about an hour a day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
