Donovans4
I have searched past threads and found lots of books on the subject of World War II for my ds 10 to read. We have watched The Longest Day, and I would like to get some suggestions of other movies that take place during WWII. thanks, LauraD in MN
HollyDay
Have you looked at any of the John Wayne movies? He made a ton of WWII movies. Band of Brothers is awesome surprisingly enough, THe Waltons have quite a few shows devoted to WWII - from MaryEllen's husband getting killed at Pearl Harbor to Ben being liberated from a Japanese POW camp. Vision Forum has done some documentaries too. HTH

readwithem
Das Boot but you might want to preview it, some parts are quite frightening - while some parts are downright boring :) Great insight into life in a U-boat. Tragic ending.
Chris in VA
The Scarlet and The Black--Gregory Peck stars in a wonderful story of the Resistance that takes place in the Vatican--excellent, with by far the best ending of any movie I have ever seen (it's told in the scrolled written part right before the credits). The Hiding Place--Holocaust movie based on true story (as is The Scarlet and The Black)--two sisters hide Jews in their house, then are discovered. The Great Escape--also based on true story. Escape thru tunneling at a POW camp.
HollyDay
A couple more: Saving Private Ryan Guns of Navarone Midway Jimmie Steward made several good ones too. I can remember Strategic Air COmmand but that was about 1950. Rock Hudson did some too - Where Eagles Gather is one.
djkapp
My boys enjoyed Tora! Tora! Tora! very much. We also watched Saving Private Ryan--it's graphic, and the language is not sanitized, but it is very good. Another good one is Schindler's List. Kristiana
I love the Great Escape!! Last year I found a PBS Nova episode where they went back to the site of the camp and did an archaeological dig to find one of the tunnels. Fascinating stuff! Carol in Cal.
It's very difficult in places, but it's true which redeems it for me.
flyingmommy
My son started enjoying war movies about that age. His two favorites were "To Hell and Back" with Audie Murphy and "Battleground" with Ricardo Montalban, Van Johnson, and tons of other people whose names I can't remember. "Battleground" is black and white. The nice thing about these old ones is the language is not bad, nothing like the more recent war movies that come out. flyingmommy
I remembered a few others we enjoy. LOL "Operation Petticoat" is great. A bit lighter than the other movies mentioned, but entertaining. Cary Grant and Tony Curtis in the same movie.....what's not to like? Also, "Father Goose" and "Mr. Roberts" are great! "The Enemy Below" is a really great movie, too. Can you tell we like old movies? Jeannie

stripe
The Best Years of Our Lives is a really touching movie, about three servicemen returning from the war; each is in a different stage of life.
