  1. Make sure you wear heavy duty boots, not tennis shoes! Your feet will get cold if you are standing on concrete or anything similar for a long time. Hand and feet warmers would be good. (and, I would love to run in 20 degrees, that would feel downright balmy after today!) I am sure lots of runners will show up for your event!

I haven't read all the responses, but I do work in a hospital and we just received similar guidelines today. Our guidelines say no children under age 5. However, the guidelines also say "compassionate exceptions can be made." I would talk to the charge nurse on your husband's unit and see what he/she says.
  3. First of all, congrats to you for taking on this challenge! I think it is very smart of you to train with a group. I ran my first marathon last October, and it really was an amazing experience. I did my training on my own, and I really wish I had had someone to train with. Because of my work schedule, it would have been really hard to train with a group, especially for long weekend runs. Since you are training with a group, hopefully there will be emphasis on cross training and strength training. Those were things I didn't really do, and I paid the price in the last 5 miles of my race. Figuring out your nutrition during the race is key, and remember to not do anything new the day of the race. Be sure you have trained in the clothes you will wear, have run at the same time the race will be held, and have eaten the same foods you will consume. Also, set multiple goals, A, B, and C goals. (My C goal was to get to the start line healthy and finish the race, my B goal was to finish under 5 hours, and my A goal was to finish under 4:30) Several people told me to not set a time goal for your first marathon, but I think it is almost impossible not to. Every runner has some time in mind, no matter the race distance. I said "never again" as I crossed the finish line, but here I go again on Saturday. I did a little better with the cross/strength training this time around, but not great. And I have realized if I want to continue running marathons, it is crucial to do so if I want to cross the finish line happy and proud of my accomplishment. I was told by several people that the first marathon is all about the experience, and to some extent that is true. It was something I never really dreamed of doing when I was younger, so at age 50 I really wanted to soak in the experience and enjoy all of it. (and I did enjoy it, up to about mile 21!) The actual event is something of a celebration of al your hard work and training. Oh, and make sure you put your name on your shirt so the spectators can cheer for you! Enjoy! Please, send me a PM if you have any specific questions. Laura
  4. DH, DS, and I were at Yellowstone last summer and we all wore Montrail trail running shoes. We went on hikes of up to 10 miles and the shoes were great. We got them at a Columbia outlet store for a very reasonable price.
  5. my son asked for a very expensive computer, and we have repeatedly told our kids no phones or computers as Christmas gifts. So I have some fleece pjs, three books, and a Steam gift card for him. What are you getting your teen boy?
  6. If he is a runner, then knuckle lights or a headlamp. http://www.knucklelights.com/ Gu, chomps, or Nuun would all be appreciated by a runner. A Road ID would also be good, maybe a coupon to order one, because you would need to know phone numbers, and even some health information. http://www.roadid.com/Common/default.aspx also, hand or feet warmers.
  7. I went back to work about two years ago, and I knew at the time I didn't want to do what I had previously done (accountant). I did a lot of research and decided health care would offer the most opportunities. However, since I wasn't sure I would like it, I decided to start with an entry level job, and got my certified nursing assistant certificate. I was fortunate to get a job at a large hospital where I make a decent hourly wage, but have great benefits. When I got the job, we immediately started saving $450 per month in health insurance costs for our family. I work .6FTE and do have to work every other weekend, but this has been a great job for me and my family. If I was ten years younger, I would definitely think about going back to school and getting a nursing degree. For now I am content to work approximately 3 days a week, providing money and benefits for our family.
  8. I haven't read all the responses, but here is a diner in my town, very well known http://www.mickeysdiningcar.com/
  9. I haven't read all the responses, but will share a little bit of my story. I started running a little bit with my son in 2009 when I was 46. We did the Couch to 5K training program. That was fun, and I continued running through 2010, a few times a week, nothing too serious. In April of 2011 when I was 48 years old, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. One of the best things a person can do to help prevent a recurrence is exercise, so I got serious. I upped my running quite a bit, and that fall, 3 months after completing radiation, I ran a 10 mile race. I also lost 13 pounds and my cholesterol dropped by 35 points. Since then I have run 3 half marathons and will be running my first marathon this fall at the age of 50. So, all that to say that, yes, it is very possible. Set goals and work to get there, and the sky is the limit.
  10. From what I have read on Trip Advisor, apartment rentals in NYC are illegal, except in very specific (lon term rental) situations. There are plenty of stories of people who rent aprrtments, only to arrive in the city and find that the apartment doesn't actually exist. Please do lots of research before you put any money down on an apartment rental.
  11. I will be getting a Kindle for my birthday, can you share the websites that you are getting these emails from? I would love to load up my Kindle with some good books, and free is the way to go!
  12. Last year this store had a sample/seconds sale, and we got a few wool blankets for a great price. Christmas presents for everyone! http://www.faribaultmill.com/
  13. you might want to check into the Nice Ride bike program. https://www.niceridemn.org/ and they could check out all sorts of places, Minnehaha Falls park, the Grand Rounds, the Greenway, etc. (bring your own helmets). There is also a Frisbee golf course at Minnehaha Falls. If they are interested in science, I would recommend the Science Museum of MN, downtown St Paul. there are also Segway tours, but I don't know much about them.
  14. If it is any comfort to you, an MRI doesn't use radiation, it is not like an X-ray at all. It uses magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to make pictures of organs and structures inside the body.
