mamakelly
I'm looking to buy my 16 year old scout a camping stove for Christmas. Most of The boys in his troop have a Jet Boil. One of his friends has a pocket rocket. My DS says that he likes the pocket rocket better because you can cook other things besides boiling water, but it seems to me that the jet boil is easier to manage. When they backpack they do not cook, they just rehydrate backpacking food. When they camp (but not backpack), they have patrol boxes, so he wouldn't need his stove. Any thoughts? DawnM
We have two pocket rockets. One is an actual PR brand and the other is a knock off. Honestly, they both work really well. One was $8 and the other was about $30. The main difference is that you will also need a mess kit to cook with it. We got an MSR brand. EndOfOrdinary
You cannot fix a Jet Boil. The PR is completely disassemble-able and you can clean it, fix it, and keep it alive through anything just short of the apocolypse.

mom2scouts
It's too bad they don't still make the Svea stove. Dh has one that's almost 40 years old and it still works fine! It will probably survive a zombie apocalypse too.

BrittanyM
My husband has a jet boil and I bought my BIL a pocket rocket last year. I think the pocket rocket is a better purchase.
BrittanyM
I asked DH (he has more hands on experience and knowledge of the products) and he said if you're just heating water the jet boil is better as it uses much less fuel and is lighter to pack because of that. He also said there is a jet boil that has a cooking top so if you're son would want that in the future just make sure to get the model with that option. livetoread
I considered the JB but got the PR instead for the reasons your son mentioned. I really like it. Like someone said above, I think at least one model of the JB has a cooking part now, so maybe that's the best of both worlds, don't know. I do know I like my PR and don't regret my choice. LucyStoner
Pocket Rocket is the gold standard for a reason.
Loowit
I asked my DH who does a lot of backpacking with DS's troop and DD's crew and he said he likes his PR.

Yes! It does look like that. DH definitely got his money's worth out of the one he has.
