moonlight
for 8 and 12 year old boys? no more than 130 pages or so? I would rather they be "younger" in topic rather than older since the older one is an avid reader and sometimes doesn't even join us for read alouds. Thanks! ChocolateMomster
These are all around the 170 pages. Sorry, it's hard to find something with less pages. Peter Pan E.B. White books Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin Five Children and It and the rest in the Series Roald Dahl Books
SparklyUnicorn
Probably more than that many pages, but what about the Horrible Books? Or what about a book of various short stories? The slimmest book I have read this year was The Little Prince and that's still longer than 130 pages.

Chrysalis Academy
If it's allowed to be deliciously creepy, my all-time favorite short read aloud is The Thirteen Clocks by James Thurber. 124 pages! And your older son will like it too!

blue daisy
We're reading Gooseberry Park by Cynthia Rylant. Sweet story, about 130 pgs, and my kids (9, 7 and 4) are all enjoying it.
SeaConquest
Fortunately the Milk by Neil Gaiman We read this the other day (in one sitting), and I just could.not.get.into.it. I think I am in a read-aloud funk. Hoping that Five Children and It snaps me out of it.
moonlight
I also wanted to add: The Iron Man/The Iron Giant by Ted Hughes Mightier than The Sword: World Folktales for Strong Boys (You can easily read 1 chapter per sitting and you are done with the story) for anyone else looking for shorter books. Tanaqui
Children's chapter books right now tend to be on the long side. You might try looking at books from the 70s - 90s, such as Bunnicula, The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks, Mail Order Wings, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, The Fairy Rebel, James and the Giant Peach, Hatchet, the Liza, Bill, and Jed Mysteries, and so on. I don't have exact page counts for these, but I'm pretty sure they all come in around or under 130pp.

raptor_dad
If you don't mind it being absurd and having lots of songs.... Norman Lindsay's "The Magic Pudding"[1] is absolutely hilarious and my copy is ~139 pages with large print and lots of pictures. [1] There are nice book reissues but we usually just read the illustrated version at http://www.gutenberg.org/files/23625/23625-h/23625-h.htm
ALB
The Reluctant Dragon by Kenneth Grahame (author of Wind and the Willows). It's a short book, both humorous and adventurous, perfect for boys in that age group.

We've listened to it several times in the car. It really cheers up freeway driving. :) This was my brother's favourite at that age: http://www.amazon.com/Pudgins-Nancy-Pearls-Crush-Rediscoveries/dp/1477827331/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426749565&sr=8-1&keywords=Mr+Pudgins
