Congrats!

What type of puppy?  Age?

Pictures are required.

Besides food, water and plenty of cuddle time you will need a safe place for puppy to be when you can't watch their every move-- crate or small room... a leash is also helpful INSIDE-- keeps puppy by your side if you need to take your eyes off of them.

Also a good enzyme cleaner is worth its weight in gold.

To give any specific advice we need more info.  At least breed (or mix) and age.

In general -- Try to take him (her?) outside every thirty minutes when awake.  You'll hear people say once every hour or two is enough.  For most pups it isn't nearly often enough IMO.  You want to give him every possible opportunity for success.  The extra effort now will be well worth it in the long run.

Get lots of chew toys and redirect puppy to one of them anytime he starts chewing on something inappropriate.

Don't let pup do anything now you won't want him doing when he's full grown.  What's cute now might not be so cute in a year.

Reward good behavior.  Ignore bad behavior and calmly redirect to something more appropriate.

And most importantly . . . enjoy your new family member!

our strategies for success have been:

1. - gated into the laundry room (easy clean up) - on leash when not in the laundry room with the leash attached to someone all the time.

2 - lots of play time - walks, tug-o-war.

3 - Correct the biting right from day one so they learn NOT to use their teeth on humans.  We also started work on Sit and Down (to stop the jumping) right from day one as well because we have large dogs.

4 - Redirection - everytime they start chewing on something inappropriate (and they will!), redirect to an appropriate chew toy.  This is another good reason to keep them on leash when not in their safe room - easier to catch the chewer quickly.

Enjoy your puppy!

wait, what? Is this sweet puppy from a breeder or was he abandoned?

My concern would be determining if it's been properly weaned & if dewormings or vax have been done. Be absolutely ridiculously careful about bringing the pup anywhere near where other dogs have been until you know it's vaccination status. Parvovirus kills. We've had several outbreaks in our province recently....

otherwise, yeah, check the other thread that ajfries linked - oodles or resources there :)
