countrygal
Has anyone donated hair before? Which are good/reputable organizations? Anything I should know in advance? Thanks!
milovany
When I researched it a few years ago, I chose Pantene's "Beautiful Lengths" program over Locks of Love.
Guest
Locks of Love is not the best choice.
mommybee
I've done Locks of Love the last three times but I am going with Pantene the next time.
Teresa in MO
my dd got 13 inches cut off her hair a couple of years ago and we donated to Wigs 4 Kids.
Loowit
My DD and I have donated twice to Locks of Love. We went with that because it is where the hair cut place sent donations. DD is ready to donate again soon, so I might look into other options.
Farrar
I was pretty shocked by that piece about Locks of Love that ran in the NY Times a few years ago and how little they do. It doesn't match their reputation at all.
lmrich
I have done Locks for Love and Pantene. I have donated three times total. Each time the salon donated the hair for me. I did not select the charity. I just decided it was time and called a salon. Next time I will research more.
Mergath
I've done Locks of Love three or four times, but I won't be donating my hair to them anymore, after what I've read about them. My hair grows freakishly fast and is really thick, and I often get two donations in one when I go for a haircut. I'm a little annoyed that all that hair I donated ended up in a trash bin or sold for profit or something.

SKL
My daughter donated her hair to Children with Hair Loss. It was the only one I found that both gives free hair pieces to kids and accepts lengths under 12".
shawthorne44
Yeah, I would never donate to Locks of Love. In High School my art teacher had made a wall tapestry completely by hand as her thesis project. She said she bought human hair that had been donated because it was much cheaper than wool and a better quality. I figure my hair is worth more to me on my head then sheep's wool. countrygal
Thanks for all the suggestions. I heard that Locks of Love wasn't a good place to donate to, but I wasn't sure why. I'll look into the others!
Jenny in GA
Yes, please donate your hair, but not to Locks of Love! There are many, many, many women like me who rely on donations from people like you in order for us to have any hair! Locks of Love, I have heard, will take excess hair, or hair that is appropriate for an adult and not a child, strip it and color it (which totally destroys it) and sell it as hair extensions. There are so many people that need your hair -- especially if it is blond or light brown.
Jenny in GA
Also, here is some information from Freedom Hair, the organization I bought my hair from. If I understand correctly, there will make sure that all donated hair goes to someone who needs it for medical reasons. http://www.freedomwigs.com/subsidies-information/Hair%20Donation%20criteria.pdf
WinsomeCreek
I've donated to Beautiful Lengths by Pantene. I understand some places only provide free wigs for kids, whereas BL gives to adults as well. I chose them after talking to someone who had first hand experience.
