nannyaunt
I ran across a sale on Basher Books. I have no experience with them good or bad. Does anyone else have an opinion?
Miss Tick
I'm always attracted by the graphics, but then the text is so piecemeal and dry, no one reads them. They are almost more like subject-specific dictionaries. With cute pictures.
HelenNotOfTroy
My 7-year-old loves them.
SilverMoon
They seem to get tons of rave reviews here. My science loving DS was very underwhelmed by them, and frankly so was I. *shrug* (He loved Horrible Science though.)
Farrar
Not a huge hit here. My kids also found the text dry. I keep thinking I'm not sure who they're for. The text is really detailed in most of them - closer to middle school level for what you might expect a kid to know. But the graphics and the attitude scream elementary as if they're more for 3rd or 4th graders. But some kids just LOVE them. So I'm going to vote that it really depends on the kid. The information is certainly solid. I'd say get a couple and see if your kids like them. If they're a hit, you'll know to get more and if they're not it's not like you bought a huge set. Dmmetler
My DD found her first one at 5, and I now have to buy every one as it comes out. She loves the little characters and tends to use them as a jumping off point to find more about the topic. I do think it's a "love it or hate it" situation. Grover
DS has loved them from about 3. I think they're perfect for young / precocious readers - friendly looking, but heaps of information at the level the crave. At nearly 8 he's pretty much grown out of them, but still revisits them periodically.
Space station
Op, can you share where you ran across the sale??
Eagle
Ds owns all of them (ok, not the US presidents one) and LOVES them. We get new ones as soon as they are released (yay for mythology and superstars of history!). Ds remembers a ton of information from them but I can understand them not being a fit for every kid. Crimson Wife
DS absolutely LOVES them, but I agree that they seem to be a hit-or-miss thing.
SunnyDays
DS loved them here too, from about ages 7-10. Now at almost 12, he's kind of outgrown them, but refuses to part with them. They are very kid-friendly in presentation, and some kids find that it hits the sweet spot for going deeper in a topic while age appropriate. nannyaunt
Zulily has several of them for 7.99 each. They are in the International Literacy Day Collection. They usually have a lot of neat stuff. I just don't have a large budget :(.
Sherry in OH
We borrow them from the library. My sons love them. I think they are appealing to young children with high reading levels or high interest levels and parents willing to read lists of facts. AsgardCA
We won a full set of these, and while my kids haven't had much opportunity to really dig into them yet, DS8 loves them. I've looked over them myself and love that each topic is a good introduction and in-depth enough to satisfy but offer good branching off points. They also each come with a poster which the kids insist I hang up immediately. I look forward to getting the Mythology and Superstars of History books.
MistyMountain
I wasn't overly impressed. It didn't seem to go into a lot of detail but my ds did like the two I read him so far. My library doesn't carry many of these just the two I read them. I might try to get more interlibrary loan.
