mom2bee
Is there a word for a thinner, lighter blanket? Sort of like how a comforter/quilt is a thicker, heavier blanket, but in the opposite direction? I have been wracking my brain for this and can't find anything. Is the word that I'm looking for just a "blanket"? Is it a sheet? (or some sort of sheet?) I'm talking about something a person would lay under...not something for the mattress itself. Lolly
Well, a sheet would go on top of a person. Fitted sheet goes on mattress. (Of course, you could put a sheet on the mattress.) A sheet is different from a blanket in my mind. Something about the weave/texture... I would call what I think you are thinking of a light-weight blanket. Myeightkiddies
We call them summer blankets, which are usually cotton and lightweight.
Indian summer
Here, they are labeled summer weight comforters.
Seasider
Coverlet
gardenmom5
coverlet thermal blanket (they are lightweight, "airy" woven blankets often made of cotton. common for summer. quality one's are surprisingly warm.) I don't think of quilts as being heavy - but more along the weight of a coverlet. comforters can vary in weight from thick and toasty to thin for summer. MEmama
Well in Maine we have winter quilts and summer quilts so... That's probably not what you're asking. :) I'd say lightweight blanket.

zoobie
Coverlet That's what I call them too. :)
Denise in Florida
If it is decorative and goes on top it could be a bedspread. I wonder if that is a regional word? My mother is from Kansas and we have called them spreads, but when I tried to shop for one in Florida no one knew what I meant. I don't use the word 'coverlet'. Seasider
I don't use the word 'coverlet'. I didn't either, til I started shopping for one! I think the difference between a coverlet and a bedspread (in my mind, anyway) is that a bedspread goes all the way to the floor, while a coverlet, like a comforter, does not, and is often paired with a dust ruffle.
