I enjoyed Honeymoon in Purdah (a Canadian woman traveling through Iran).

If you like cookbooks which are half travel memoirs, Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid have a series of Asian-themed ones. I enjoyed paging through Beyond the Great Wall and Mangoes and Curry Leaves with my MIL. Their other books may have more recipes, but those two had some interesting cultural vignettes and focus on regional foods and cooking. The Chinese one even focuses quite a bit on western China and Tibet.

Duguid and Alford's books are my favorite cookbooks. I got _Flatbreads and Flavors_ not long after it came out and have been devoted ever since.

In the same travel/memoir/cookbook league I've heard good things about Pretty Good Number One, Shark's Fin and Sichuan Pepper, and Pok Pok. I haven't read them. I did like The Sharper Your Knife the Less You Cry (woman loses her job and goes to cooking school in France memoir).

Of course, Julia Child's autobiography is fun and MFK Fisher is always interesting (already recommended above).

Trail of Crumbs

My friend loved it, I found it somewhat sufferable - but it has elements of food, travel, and international locations :) I didn't hate it, and I finished it, but I didn't get the love my friend and her book club had for it. But they all raved about it! Might be worth checking out. I am pretty particular, so it might just be me. LOL
