Budding architect - gift ideas?

Recommended Posts

Art supplies and maybe drawing lessons.   My architect friends are all fantastic at drawing freehand and my alma mater has an aptitude test for those applying for School of Architecture which involves drawing.

In case you are wondering what I meant

My oldest DS likes The Art of Construction mentioned above. He is showing increasing interest in the subject, so I have been looking at gifts too. I have had a hard time finding good products, but I have found lots of books. Some, at different levels...

I have a drafting set or two in mind, to give him with specialized notebooks.

Any chance he already builds? DS has been into woodworking for a while, began with hand tools. He has used my Dremel for some things and is going to get more tools for Christmas. In woodworking, as with architecture, it seems to me that the ability to move back and forth between paper plans (or computer, but I prefer he start off "old school" with pencil and paper drafting) and what you are actually building is paramount. Anyway, I have some new plan books set aside for him.

The big thing he is looking forward to is building his own clubhouse with DH. He has and loves Keep Out! http://www.amazon.com/Keep-Out-Clubhouse-Step-Step/dp/1612120296/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=31JDUFDC6Z7F7&coliid=I2KZCRQ21R5LUU. It has inspired more plans than he knows what to do with. LOL We are moving soon, but after we do, we will let him build one for sure. If it is an option, a piece of backyard real estate, this book, and a Home Depot gift card would make a pretty awesome gift! :tongue_smilie:

The David Macaulay books are wonderful.

http://www.amazon.ca/Built-Last-David-Macaulay/dp/0547342403 This one combines three of his books into one volume.

Someone recently recommended Architecture According to Pigeons (I don't own this one): http://www.amazon.com/Architecture-According-Pigeons-Stella-Gurney/dp/0714863890/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385141855&sr=8-1&keywords=Architecture+according+to+pigeons

Thank you so much for sharing this! I had no idea there were architecture classes for homeschool students. I think my son would love the Structures class.

This made me laugh.  Dh and I went to architecture school and we had a class called "Structures" and it was one of the most hated classes among architecture students. It was basically a structural engineering class and most students liked the creative, design oriented classes and tolerated the engineering classes.

I'm not sure what this Structures class is about, so your son may love it. The post just brought back some college memories.
