Mom2boys
I'm looking for some gift ideas for ds12, who is interested in becoming an architect. We already own lots of Legos and some of the Lego architecture sets. Any other suggestions to support his interest?
Arcadia
Art supplies and maybe drawing lessons. My architect friends are all fantastic at drawing freehand and my alma mater has an aptitude test for those applying for School of Architecture which involves drawing. In case you are wondering what I meant http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/02/opinion/sunday/architecture-and-the-lost-art-of-drawing.html?_r=0 http://architecture.mit.edu/history-theory-and-criticism/project/beginnings-drawing-early-architecture

Wabi Sabi
This book is full of hands-on demonstrations and projects: http://www.amazon.com/The-Art-Construction-Principles-Architects/dp/1556520808/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385138408&sr=8-1&keywords=the+art+of+construction
Alte Veste Academy
My oldest DS likes The Art of Construction mentioned above. He is showing increasing interest in the subject, so I have been looking at gifts too. I have had a hard time finding good products, but I have found lots of books. Some, at different levels... http://www.amazon.com/Discover-Americas-Favorite-Architects-Preservation/dp/0471143545/ref=la_B001KDXUQ2_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1385138598&sr=1-2 http://www.amazon.com/Under-Every-Roof-Architecture-American/dp/0470593598/ref=pd_sim_sbs_b_1 http://www.amazon.com/The-Annotated-Arch-History-Architecture/dp/0740710249/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=AYY2SUEJS83W&coliid=I317M0JYJ11IQN http://www.amazon.com/Story-Architecture-Jonathan-Glancey/dp/0789493349/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1385138912&sr=1-1&keywords=Dk+the+story+of+architecture http://www.amazon.com/Architecture-Elementary-Thinking-Architectural-Concepts/dp/1586858297/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3KKF5TXGYDN98&coliid=I31G5HSD89YFNC http://www.amazon.com/Architectural-Drawing-Course-Techniques-Representation/dp/0764138146/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=31JDUFDC6Z7F7&coliid=I1OTUPEPTZBTQD I have a drafting set or two in mind, to give him with specialized notebooks. Any chance he already builds? DS has been into woodworking for a while, began with hand tools. He has used my Dremel for some things and is going to get more tools for Christmas. In woodworking, as with architecture, it seems to me that the ability to move back and forth between paper plans (or computer, but I prefer he start off "old school" with pencil and paper drafting) and what you are actually building is paramount. Anyway, I have some new plan books set aside for him. The big thing he is looking forward to is building his own clubhouse with DH. He has and loves Keep Out! http://www.amazon.com/Keep-Out-Clubhouse-Step-Step/dp/1612120296/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=31JDUFDC6Z7F7&coliid=I2KZCRQ21R5LUU. It has inspired more plans than he knows what to do with. LOL We are moving soon, but after we do, we will let him build one for sure. If it is an option, a piece of backyard real estate, this book, and a Home Depot gift card would make a pretty awesome gift! :tongue_smilie:
Eagle
The David Macaulay books are wonderful. http://www.amazon.ca/Built-Last-David-Macaulay/dp/0547342403 This one combines three of his books into one volume. Someone recently recommended Architecture According to Pigeons (I don't own this one): http://www.amazon.com/Architecture-According-Pigeons-Stella-Gurney/dp/0714863890/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385141855&sr=8-1&keywords=Architecture+according+to+pigeons

Mom2boys
Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions. Some of the books look perfect for ds12, as he is especially interested in skyscrapers and other commercial buildings.

EmilyGF
When I was 12 and in the same situation, my dad gave me a drawing board, t-square etc, and a bunch of magazines with current and old floor plans. Oh, and lots and lots of graph paper. Emily
mom2scouts
Thank you so much for sharing this! I had no idea there were architecture classes for homeschool students. I think my son would love the Structures class. This made me laugh. Dh and I went to architecture school and we had a class called "Structures" and it was one of the most hated classes among architecture students. It was basically a structural engineering class and most students liked the creative, design oriented classes and tolerated the engineering classes. I'm not sure what this Structures class is about, so your son may love it. The post just brought back some college memories.
