Wind-in-my-hair
Does anyone include Ruth Heller books in their non-fiction collection for primary grade readers, or for reading aloud? We got one at a yard sale and I hope to get some more!
Moxie
Yep. I like them, my kids tolerate them.
FloridaLisa
I love the Ruth Heller books on parts of speech. The illustrations are just gorgeous! My olders made their own Heller books. After reading each book, they illustrated that part of speech on sketch paper, usually using a different medium (colored pencils, watercolor, pen and ink, etc.) We then stapled the illustrations together into a book. In fact, you've just reminded me that I wanted to do this with my youngers! Lisa
Chrysalis Academy
I really like them, but my 2nd dd likes the Brian Cleary books more . . . but if I got them at a yard sale, I would consider that quite a score!
Farrar
I like both the Ruth Heller and the Brian Cleary series. Though I don't think of them as things I need to own. They're really library books in my mind.
twoxcell
I have the Ruth Heller Grammar books and I read my kids them when they go through R&S English 2 every time I introduce a new part of speech. My dd loves them.
Woodland Mist Academy
We enjoyed them when my daughter was younger. I think we found them used on Ebay or somewhere.
houseofkids&pets
We use her books (and Brian Cleary's) to discuss parts of speech. I have never purchased one though. We can borrow the series from our public library.
Murphy101
I like them more than Cleary, whose art grates on me. I've done as a pp wrt to reading them and illustrating in the past. This year I'm using them with Sentence Family and Grammar-land. They're beautiful books.
An Unexpected Party
I have the parts of speech set (they were available many years ago as an entire paperback set through Scholastic). I've also got one of the science ones. I like to own them because they are books I return to again and again. We might use them when working on a part of speech in grammar, but we will often pick them up to go over something or get ideas during a writing lesson, too. We may not reread the entire book, but I have used several books several times in one year.
serendipitous journey
They are gorgeous, I purchased several, and the children have zero interest. None, zip, nada. But if you have one & are considering more then prob. your littles like it ...
