iquilt
She is new to babysitting for others and is a Red Cross certified baby sitter. She has experience watching her siblings for me. Tonight was her first official job and I'm curious how much she should get paid? Thanks!
Forget-Me-Not
I think it varies a lot by area. The girls I hired occasionally (they moved away) charged me $5/hour. I thought that was kind of low for 3 kids, plus they often drove themselves over, so I usually tacked on some extra.
iquilt
Forgot to add that she was watching 2 girls tonight, ages 9 and 6. They are a wonderful family and it is a great first job for her.
NotSoObvious
I was going to say $5 an hour, too.
Catwoman
Didn't she establish how much she would be paid before she agreed to take the job?
iquilt
Didn't she establish how much she would be paid before she agreed to take the job? It was kind of a surprise for both of us. The mom made a last minute request that put my daughter at her door only 3 minutes after the mom called me. I tried to remember everything before she left but didn't catch it all. This is new for both of us. Normally these kids are all too busy during the week for something like this but it is spring break around here and the neighborhood kids are home. Next week they will all go back to school and we won't get this situation again until July.
Catwoman
In our area, she would be able to charge around $15 per hour, and expect a tip. Rates vary a lot depending on where you live. Sorry I'm no help, but congratulations to your dd on getting her first job!

4kidlets4me
My daughter has a regular Friday night job for a church. They pay her $6 and hour and she is usually watching 2-3 kids of varying ages.
GSOchristie
I am going to ask my neighbor if her daughter can babysit some for us this summer. She is almost 14 and I was going to offer her $8 an hour for all three kids. They will be in bed at 7:00 and 7:30, and we probably wouldn't leave until 7:00. zoobie
It really depends on the area. Minimum of $20 for an evening? I made $5/hr back in 1989 or so as a 13 year old. Here I'd guess $8/hr for a younger babysitter.
QueenCat
I'd find out what others in her peer group, in your area, charge. She doesn't want to way undercharge, or people will assume she is inexperienced or not well liked. But she also doesn't want to overcharge :)
Guest submarines
$12-15 per hour.
AndyJoy
$12-15 per hour. Way too high in my area. $8 would be right around here.
iquilt
She ended up charging $7/hour for the two girls. I think we will discuss a rate scale for the future at $5/hour for one kid, $7/hour for two, maybe $8/hour for 3. I'm not entirely sure that is perfect but I think it will fit our area well, plus get her some experience.

I don't know that I would have her charge only $5/hr for one child, as it's often more work to babysit one child than it is to sit for 2 of them, because she may end up having to entertain one kid more than if there were 2 that could play together. You might want to call your local middle school or high school if they keep a list of people who need sitters and refer students to them, because they would know the going rate in your area. LibraryLover
It's $10/hr here for younger teens. Older teens/college kids make $15 to $20+ hr, depending on the number of children. Where do you live?
MomtoCandJ
When I had a sitter in Georgia,I paid her 20 a week. Dd was usually there for 30 to 45 minutes 3 days a week.
mommymilkies
Holy smokes. I fell ripped off for how much I was paid as a teen, now! I usually pay $20 an evening (couple hours with kids in bed) and from what I've been told locally, that's about twice as much as usual here.
