plansrme
First of all, I am willing to stipulate that there is no non-stupid way for an adult to break a toe. And no, I am not telling how I did this. But the toe next to my big toe is clearly broken--it points off to towards the other toes now, not straight ahead, and it hurts like the dickens. Please tell me I can just tape it to the big toe and wait for it to heal and not haul my stupid toe and my stupid story to the orthopaedist. But if you've gone to a doctor for a broken toe, did he say, "You were right to come in?" In other words, should I suck it up and see a medical professional? Cinder
You should go in. The reason I say this is because of a friend's recent incident. Her son had stayed over with us and when they were getting ready to leave her ds and my ds went running outside. Her ds's foot kicked or clipped the back of my ds's foot. Her ds started crying in pain. Her thought was, broken toe, just tape it up. But her son seemed to be in quite a bit of pain and distress. And the toe was pointing sideways. So she took him to urgent care and it was a bad break after all that needed to be in a cast. We were all shocked, especially my ds because he barely felt anything when our friend's son's foot hit him. And my friend felt terrible for thinking her ds was exaggerating his pain. Go in. The doc has probably heard all kinds of crazy broken toe stories. Yours probably isn't the stupidest. :) Hope you're feeling better soon! bzymom
It depends upon the break. If it is pointing off in another direction, you probably need to see the doctor. My broken toes have been taped, but I've never had that experience. Hope it heals quickly! :grouphug:

Didn't think that was really even a possibility. Terri

Didn't think that was really even a possibility. Terri I have had multiple broken toes so I'll chime in. If the toe is pointed to the side, I would go in. That indicates a more serious break and it should be x-rayed. As to the stupidity behind how you did it... I was cleaning floors and wanted to get under the rowing machine. I tilted the machine up on one end, (can you say 'stupid'?) thinking I would be able to support it with one arm while I vacuumed the carpet. Well, I couldn't. The thing came crashing down on my foot. Three broken toes. Damaged my foot enough to warrant an MRI and a few weeks on crutches. or how about the time I was running in the house, on freshly polished linoleum wearing nothing but socks? Slipped right into the heat register. Snapped one toe. or the time I was chasing the dog around the backyard and rammed my foot up the downspout? Got two toes that day. or the time I simply walked into a door? Shattered the little toe with that experience. Comminuted fracture. The x-rays on that one were pretty. Looked like a little galaxy of stars. The prescription from one well-humored doctor: wear shoes
*********
I broke my middle toe once. Just walking through my bedroom. Apparently I'm so clumsy that I can walk right into the corner of my BED. Whacked my toe *just right*, heard it snap, looked down, and my toe is pointing in the wrong direction. MAN did it hurt. Well, I'd never broken a toe before, and it was KILLING me, so I drove to the ER. The ER doc had to PULL MY TOE BACK INTO PLACE before taping it to the next toe. Can you say ouch? I had to brace myself, and warned the doc that I may scream. He said it was fine so long as I didn't kick him. :D My toe still doesn't bend right, but I'm pretty glad I went in, 'cause there's no way I'd have been able to re-align my toe myself before taping it. Oh, and they give you a script for pain, which was helpful for the first few days. So if I were you, I'd go in.

*********
Oh, man--y'all are making my whole body hurt with your stories!!!!! Just reading the phrase "broken toe" makes me cringe. It's the only thing I've ever broken, and I realize it's "only" a toe. But it HURT. And it was all crookedy and stuff, LOL.

And it was all crookedy and stuff, LOL. Oh, I *totally* feel your pain!!! I mainly get my little toes, usually on the leg of a chair or a bookcase, when I'm charging down the hall On A Mission. We had an evil bookcase in the hall in our house in San Jose, and I broke my poor little toe more than once on that thing. Well, maybe I didn't break my toe, but I'd still be down on the floor in a duck-and-cover position in agony. It got so that Mr. Ellie and my dds didn't even look up from what they were doing. :glare: We had to move to Texas and get rid of the bookcase to save me, lol. somo_chickenlady
My BIL broke his toe last week by stepping on it while walking up the stsirs. It caught on the edge of the stair and he stepped down with his full weight on it. It isn't the first time he's done that. All of the siblings have super long toes, but his are the longest and he breaks them all the time. LOL I would go have it checked.
Heather in Neverland
As one who currently has a broken toe, I'm glad I went in even though they did virtually nothing besides tape it and give me crutches. I was glad to know it was a dislocated break. That sucks. I am sorry you have to go through this.

plansrme
I have to say that just reading these responses has made my toe hurt less, or taken my mind off of it. And at least I didn't break it by stepping on it! It is just a toe, I recognize that, but the pain immediately after--oh my stars. mommymilkies
I've broken many (well, in High School soccer!). My dd just broke another last week. The doctor's office wouldn't even see her. Just told us to give her ibuprofen and make sure she doesn't injure it again.
sbgrace
I've broken a toe but it wasn't crooked like that. I'd probably go in because of the placement. My toe took a really long time to heal and it hurt to wear most shoes. I so feel for all of you but Scoutermom, wow. I can't even...ouch!
